Casinos are temples to human greed and weakness. I admire that Thailand has managed to steer clear of it.

I think it's ridiculous that wealthy Thai's, who can afford to lose, have to travel to another country to gamble, and poorer Thai's, who can not afford to travel or lose, gamble in illegal casinos run by the Thai mafia, with loan sharks circling all the time.

I don't see Las Vegas or Hong Kong as places Thailand should aspire to..

Either do I.

it has turned Sihanoukvile  into a place to avoid.

I agree, it has, but Sihanoukville has something like 72 legal casinos, and many more illegal casinos.

Pattaya would do well with one or two legal casinos for foreigners only.

That's right, another question you can't answer.

You can't make your mind up, wanting legalised casinos so the normal Thai benifits from them being taxed ( cough ) and then spout off about they're being illegal casino's......what do you want?

Quite obvious, Harry.  A couple of legal casinos in Pattaya for foreigners only does no social harm to the Thai community.

You mentioned the word "taxed."  that's if they get a foreign entity to build and run the casino/s.  If the casino/s were state owned, there would be no "tax" just pall profits.

The argument that casino's here would cause social harm to Thai's is rubbish.  The Thai's are already gambling in illegal casinos.  What is your argument against proper casinos for foreigners, or like Vietnam, wealthy locals?

As i've stated before i don't care either way if there's casino's or not, as also stated it's not gonna happen.

I've made no claims to potentially causing social harm to Thai's btw, i could not care less.

I don't care either.  Just sad to see Thailand stuck in the past, when all around them their competition is progressing much faster.

I'm not sad about anything that happens in this country, it is what it is and they deserve everything they get.

Well, I'm no fan of the Thai elite, but the average Thai deserves better governance, and could do with a break on this one.

You contradict yourself.... previously having said it was ridiculous ...

Just don't see a 'No Thais' idea flying in Thailand.....

No, every casino I have entered seemed to have a jaded kind of sad clientele wishing and hoping for that win, gaudy flashing lights appearance, a noisy environment and a general aura of sleaziness.

I see, you been to Sihanoukville (China Town) ????

No contradiction at all.

I have no doubt there are some high stakes illegal casinos in Bangkok, set up for the Thai elite, and well "protected" but it's hardly the "casino experience" is it?

The system in Vietnam is locals can enter, if they pay a cover charge and show proof of earnings.    It basically keeps the criminals, hookers, and those that can least afford to gamble out.

I can't see why a similar system here wouldn't work.

There you go  again....

Hardly.

What is your reason for suggesting casinos should not be allowed in Pattaya?  (given I have already said one or two would be fine, not 72 or more like Sihanoukville)

You need to give up the ghost on this won't happen.

I am sure it will happen. Many factors; spoken about in depth on this and other threads; point to it. A post-Covid recovery in the city would get an extra impetus from a handful of big, strictly regulated and controlled casinos. Time will tell, of course.

Why do you think it has not happened in the last 40 years?

There wasn't demand for casinos here 40 years ago; most visitors came for the sex. In the last 10 years or so Chinese and Arab visitors have come in greater numbers; there is demand now and with Covid disrupting tourism badly that demand is more pressing. Pattaya can surely develop a business model that doesn't overwhelm the city with casinos as happened in Sihanoukville and Macao. The Singapore model is at the other extreme but closer to what we might see here. Three or  four big casinos strategically placed accross the city: one or two on 2nd Road, one on Koh Larn and one in the Bang Saray area.

What reasoning do you have for no casinos in the last 40 years and none in the future?

And there was me thinking that one of the upper floors at the Ambassador hotel had been reserved for just this very thing, after the pics that Thai guy posted from his quarantine room I don't think I'll bother thanks. ????

My reasoning is it would have happened by now which it has not.

Casinos only throw charities a bone ever so often at best....

The only winners are the Casinos the land owners, well paid management and some employees.....Everyone else is a loser.......

The winner who can walk away with their winnings and not come back are a drop in the bucket.......

Gambling breeds despair and poverty.....

the odds in casinos are invariably better than all other places,

they expect such a turnover that they can make the odds better.

but obviously they will still make a profit or they wouldnt exist

For medical use only but that's a whole other debate.

Time will tell, i've about 30-40 years left before i expire so will see what happens before then...

I dislike Casinos and the gambling industry, it victimizes those with addiction issues

Should they close all bars because of alcoholics?

People carp on about the benefits of 'casinos; and skirt over the negatives.

If the vulnerable are not allowed entry, what are the negatives?  Will gambling lead to prostitution in Pattaya?  ????
