VHS cassette

It is my understanding that VHS tapes were never very popular in Thailand, mainly because they never really coped with the high humidity.

From the early 1990s they were superceded by VCDs and. then later by DVDs.

Because of this, I think you are going to struggle to find a shop that will be able to help you.

Incidentally, if you don't already own one, DVD players are still available here if you look hard enough, so ignore the post above's lame attempt at humour.

You might try larger photo shops as they might have ability.  Also computer malls might have someone doing.  Some hotels may still have VHS/Beta players available for corporate presentations.  Some of the old TV repair shops might have a unit they could play it on.

VHS tapes were hugely popular here in the late 80s/early 90s.  Parts of lower Sukhumvit were lined with stalls selling pirated movies on tape, and there were shops with catalogues of 100s of movies where you went in and ordered the ones you wanted, and returned later to pick up the newly copied tapes.  In those pre internet and satellite TV days, they were the only way of watching decent English language movies at home.  I still have boxes of tapes stashed in a storeroom, along with a Sony VCR player.   VCDs only started getting popular in the late 90s.

whats a VHS cassette ?   :giggle:

It's the one that all the porn was on! Betamax never stood a chance.

It's also a bit of a myth about beta being better than VHS,the only difference I recall was the picture on the screen was visible when you fast forward.

Sony also made a number of models of VHS players/recorders.

Believe that was quite late in the game and never had one and forgot about that.  Thanks for the memory tic.

Original systems Beta was of a higher quality but VHS improved more than Beta as I recall so about the same in last years.

Going back to my first years in Thailand had the Akai VT100 portable with camera which recorded b/w up to about 20 minutes as I recall.  Had to demonstrate to customs on return to USA.

Just a guess but you might find a long term expat near you in Thailand who has a player to rent or lend out.  Record the video and audio to your phone if quality isn't an issue.

An 87 year old expat I knew, passed a few years ago. He had an extensive collection of old tapes along with a working a VHS player. Dozens of  movies, television series, documentaries and more. His personal assistant was forced to toss everything but it would seem likely that there are more old timers like him who hold on to the older technology because of the hassle it would be to transfer everything.

You might have to look off of the beaten path somewhere, but there's no way that they are all gone for good...............pawn shops ?..swap meets?

I recently found an old, interesting VHS cassette and I do not have a VHS cassette player.

Where can I in Thailand (type of shop) have the contents transferred to a DVD.

Thanks for feedback

Hi. Where in Thailand are you. If in Pattaya I can lend you mine. Just remembered I have one stashed away upstairs (together with a box full of Scart cables ????). It hasn’t been used in 20+ years. So I need to check if it’s still works first.

Many would say a larger and inferior version of the Beta cassette.

VHS,(Video Home System) was a JVC invention. The reason Beta failed because Sony  did not give the licenses out to everyone. JVC did.Beta was a fare superior tape . In the end JVS had many companies making VHS machines , where Sony only had a handful.here is a great portable to convert tapes.
