Seems hes been convicted by most already

If hes drunk and its proved or he was driving dangerously  to cause  the accident of course hes guilty and deserves the appropriate punishment.

But there could other reasons e.g vehicle malfunction health issue  I certainly dont know and neither does anyone on here.

And lastly in closing just because you complain about no beer days does not mean you a dangerous drunk driving maniac

Don't get why people don't understand that if you got a large group of people dependent on alcohol (complaining about a no beer day) then a subset of those people would drink and drive too. But just being in that group does not make you a drunk driver. Though I have read quite often on this forum about people who do drink and drive. I could name one that admitted online but that is bad manners.

Just like not everyone who drinks will drink and drive but of course some of those drinking will drive too. Its only logical.

They should check if he was drinking and driving but even if he did not then it does not mean he is innocent. Like you said medical or mechanical failure. But if none of this applies then he deserves punishment.

It was a scene of chaos yesterday as I was coming home. Ambulance staging area transfering bodies, I counted five ambulances. I did not see the accident but it was clear the truck driver just plowed into the scooters at speed.

Glad to hear you're still sucking air and weren't involved yourself.

No it doesn't, just because this tool caused a drunken accident doesn't mean we are all the same.

Perhaps you don't drink so put us all in the same bracket...Very naughty...????

Agreed... over 20 years here, I’m friends with a lot of Thai guys, most of whom drink and drive, I’m friends with a lot of westerner, most of whom don’t.

Most of my Wife’s friends don’t even drink, so drink driving is not a problem, although most of them used to, including my Wife who had an accident while drunk when she was younger.

As generalisations go: More Thai’s in Thailand drive while under the influence, that said, more foreigners probably do so. Those same foreigners who drive under the influence in Thailand probably don’t in their home countries. Total hypocrites IMO - they know better and have not been socially conditioned, they just think the rules don’t apply to them.

It's outrageous that drinking and driving is still socially acceptable in Thailand. People are aware of the consequences but they think they ‘drive ok’. Policing remains ineffective on this front.

--------

On topic: The video shows the outrageous incident - the driver of the pickup didn’t even brake (no brake lights in the video) - the assumption would be the driver fell asleep at the week.

5pm is very early to be so drunk that someone falls asleep at the wheel. I’m not saying the police happened, but I am skeptical of the initial report. Even if a Thai were involved I’d be skeptical of someone being so drunk at 5pm they’ve fallen asleep behind the wheel. If at 2am - drunk and fallen asleep is far more believable.

OR... the driver had a medical issue, but he’s in police custody and not in a hospital. Thus, I think we have to go with the initial statement / headline that he was drunk.

IF proven drunk, I’m with the hang-em-high brigade. This guy needs the book thrown at him, he has destroyed two families.

I wonder if he can be prosecuted back in his own country for this, just like pedos do.

Only the drunk driving pedo's? That's illogical too.

Im pretty sure the percentage of foreigners drinking and driving here is higher then in their home country.

I am also right that percentage wise more Thais drink and drive.

Is that:

A ) All foreigners, or

B ) Only the foreigners you know, or

C ) Only ThiaVisa forum members?

And you know he was 'drunk' how? You trust the Thai police? Did they give him a breathalyzer already? Typical Thai Visa hang 'em high knee jerk reaction.

Let´s say like this! It stands in the headline that he was. To me it sounds clear that you are trying to make it look better than it said to be. That´s a more typic TV-member reaction when it regards a foreigner. I would love to read your comment if they said it was a Thai driver.

Having beer banned for a day discussion has nothing to do with a drunk farang boy racer. ????

It shows the dependance of the local farangs to alcohol. Do you really think that with such a high dependency not many would drink and drive. There are even more then a few people on the forum who admit to it.

Quoting things like bad public transportation or high price of taxi (i mean if you can drink you can pay a taxi)

Totally irresponsible.

I am also of the opinion that ‘beer bans’ are not related to idiots to drink drive.

I can happily sit in quarantine for two weeks without beer, I can happily go days without a beer.

I just accept that some days I cannot drink, I cannot buy beer between 2-5pm etc, but the reason I accept it is because I can’t change it.

But, I have a strong opinion on the subject and if asked I would voice that opinion:

- I think its utterly stupid that we can’t buy beer from 2-5pm.

- I think it's ridiculous that there are whole days where we can’t buy beer.

- I think its moronic that during lockdown people couldn’t buy beer and drink in their homes.

- I think it's stupid that people can’t enjoy a beer on the beach.

- I find it highly objectionable when I go to a restaurant and can’t enjoy some wine or a beer with my dinner.

- I find it highly objectionable when I’m hungry on a Saturday afternoon and fancy a beer with a snack at 4pm

Alcohol itself has become the target rather than the people who abuse common decency when drinking.

My opinions on the drinking bans in Thailand do not highlight any tolerance or driving while under the influence - from a personal point of view the two are not related.

That said, I understand what you (Robbok) are implying: That some westerners voice their opinions on the ‘drinking bans’ so vehemently that its hardly surprising that many westerners drink and drive - I just think that’s a weak-link when using it as a generalisation.

It could also be argued that living in major tourist area such as Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hua Hin attracts the characters who are more likely to forego common decently and regulations and fall into the ‘gone native’ trap when their moral compass slips though what I can only describe as diminished social responsibility.

a thai person on a motorbike would have zero chance of escaping this maniac, because they never pay attention to what is around them.

i would think a westerner would have seen it coming.

But what kind of piece of <deleted> was driving that boy racer coloured pick up?

and speeding on that road, is just lunacy.

rot in prison you piece of <deleted>

The beer ban remark was more to show that we got quite a number of people who really love to drink. IMHO its not so strange that a subset would drink and drive and some have admitted to it on this forum. That was basically the remark. If you got a group drinkers there will always be those who drink and drive. Point was not that if you oppose a drink ban you will drink and drive but more to identify that there is a large group that loves to drink.

But, I have a strong opinion on the subject and if asked I would voice that opinion:

- I think its utterly stupid that we can’t buy beer from 2-5pm.  (agreed)

- I think it's ridiculous that there are whole days where we can’t buy beer. (agreed)

- I think its moronic that during lockdown people couldn’t buy beer and drink in their homes. (not really agreed as it will make people party at home but get your point)

- I think it's stupid that people can’t enjoy a beer on the beach. (as long as they dont become loud and obnoxious sure agreed)

- I find it highly objectionable when I go to a restaurant and can’t enjoy some wine or a beer with my dinner. (also stupid)

- I find it highly objectionable when I’m hungry on a Saturday afternoon and fancy a beer with a snack at 4pm (agreed)

I don't often drink (but I do at times) and the rules about buying are stupid.

To be honest I could not care less if people drink to much get high too much as long as they don't bother other people or put them in danger. So let them drink all they want.

Agreed.... I also don’t care if people want to drink, get high, or do whatever they want to do. I do care that people go about their lives with respect and consideration for others.

There is a big difference between high spirits and becoming a nuisance. There is also a time and a place for high spirits, high-jinx and a bit of fun vs irritating the <deleted> out of other people around you.

Unfortunately, some do not know the line and become a pain in the backside. Yet, this pales into insignificant when comparing those who also chose to drink a skinful then think they are ok to drive because they will be careful.

Thus, I think we have to go with the initial statement / headline that he was drunk.

The headline does not say that he was drunk, it just describes him as "drunk", in inverted commas, there's a huge difference. The inverted commas are used to indicate that the word may not be being used accurately.

Valid point if we were reading a ‘high brow publication’, however, the grammatical talents of those who write the headlines found on this forum and those from which it sources its news leave much to be desired.

The use of speech (quotation) marks either implies that drunk is the term used and quoted by someone at the scene with first hand knowledge, or, as you suggest, it was implied with a degree of scepticism, in which case including such in the headline could be described as being somewhat sensationalist, deliberately misleading and attention-grabbing.

Thus; the question begs, was the driver of the pickup drunk or not?

I hope we find out. This is a highly recognisable vehicle. It's very likely someone on this forum knows the driver and knows the full story already.

What is the value of putting "foreigner" in the title ? meaning if Thai then it's no news or less worse ?

This way you create racism, or mark all foreigner as drunk drivers.

No line in the article that the Thais maybe could survived the accident if they wear a helmet ?

Don't understand me wrong, what happened is bad/sad, but the article should not have a smell of bad farang kill good Thai. This brings no value.

You gotta laugh. Foreigners are often having a go at the Thais for blaming them for this that and the other. Here we have the Thais being the main culprits for letting foreigners see and replicate their actions.
Imagine in court. Why did you do it? I saw the Thais do it, so I wanted to copy them.

Drunk or not, or when in Thailaind.  The word 'Foreigner' increases the severity of this idiotic driver.

And how do we get from foreigner to 'farang' which means Westerner or 'expat' which is self explanatory as some posters have done?

there was a Brit who killed a guy in mai Kao last year in a Benz. Another one also in a Benz in Chiang mai or rai a few years back. If you google in Thai you will find over 50 examples of foreigners killing Thais on the road because of speeding, drunk or both.

To my knowledge they always buy themselves out of jail.

This guy in his mighty FORD Pick-up, managed to kill 2 Thai people and hurt several others.
Drunk or not, by the time the police will have finished to flee money out of his pockets and he will have paid for the victims as well, they will escort him to the airport on his way back to where he came from.
Goodbye

Some of the expats in Thailand love to imitate the locals and love their drink. A lot of those on the forum. Just look at the howls of displeasure when alcohol is banned for a day.

If guilty send him to jail and then ban him from entering Thailand. 2 people died and if he was drunk its an unforgiveable act.

sad lot they are
