All snakes caught in Phuket will be handed over to a wildlife reserve in Phang Nga, said Pongchart Chouehorm, Director of the Khao Phra Thaew Natural and Wildlife Education Centre in Thalang. Photo: PR Dept

PHUKET:-- Amid fears that large king cobras caught in or near houses over the past month will be released back into the wild in Phuket, Pongchart Chouehorm, Director of the Khao Phra Thaew Natural and Wildlife Education Centre in Thalang has announced that all snakes caught in homes in Phuket are to be taken off-island.

Mr Pongchart told the press yesterday that every wild animal in Phuket can be considered to be in one of two groups: those living in protected natural reserves, and those that have found they way into unprotected wilds.

“Nowadays, there are many animals getting lost in areas of Phuket. Some of them are also injured. If we find injured animals like lorises or monkeys, we always take them to receive medical treatment by veterinarians. After that, we release them to the place where we found them,” Mr Pongchart said.

Two reasons that having King Cobras close by is bad news.

1.   They're King Cobras.

2.   They eat other snakes.

Due to the hardship the Government and the Corona Virus has caused King Cobras can now be consumed and disposed of off the Island by way of a bowel motion !

King cobras kill around 5 people a year worldwide according to the Smithsonian National zoo

If you want a dangerous snake, try a Russell's viper or a saw-scaled viper - tens of thousands of deaths per year.

Far more people killed by road accidents or alcohol related misadventure in Phuket than by a king cobra.

King cobra feed on smaller species of cobra. So if you remove them there is going to be a big I crease in small cobra numbers.....it is easy to see and catch one big king cobra then lots of little ones hiding under things around the house.

Yes King Cobras main diet is other snakes so remove the king and the other snakes eg. common Cobras multiply , so no big nasty but lots and lots of smaller ones.

...for dangerous-ness, Black Mambas too.

The point is......is that the King Cobra is largely immune to different venoms and would have eaten those dangerous snakes, though, it mainly eats cobras.

Of course, no Mambas here, but, there are Vipers.

aren't all levels of wildlife a part of another's food chain?

uh oh they are playing fire with nature

Yes, I spent some time in Mamba-country in Africa, I had a phial of anti-venom, until someone decided to power off the cool-box. There were lots of mongoose there for 'population-control'.

You see, bringing logic into it again...

How many have died because of Cobras?  apart from that, to be fair, I dun want any cobra near me (or any snake for the matter).
