New Armed Forces chief orders less generals and more efficiency

Thailand's armed forces have been told to reduce the number of generals in their ranks.

This comes after a budget meeting chaired by the new Royal Thai Armed forces chief Gen Chalermpol Srisawat.

He wants to see a reduction in army generals of 5-10%.

This will mainly be accomplished by not replacing the generals when they retire.

He also wants greater efficiency and the scrapping of unnecessary departments and operations.

Also at the meeting were the other leaders of the military forces including RTP chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk, air force chief ACM Airbull Suttiwan and navy supremo Adm Chatchai Sriworakhan.

The army chief had a stand-in at the meeting.

Gen Chalermpol who took up the post of commander-in-chief last October declared then that the military should engage in no more coups and stay out of politics.

This despite the fact that joint chiefs are part of the senate.

Online information suggests that the Thai military is massively top heavy with generals.

There is one general for every 212 serving men and a total of 1,700 in the armed forces.

According to wikipedia this makes the top brass bloated for a military of its size.

50% and above would be more appropriate. Half of them wouldn't know what to do if in a real battle situation anyway. They are very good at dressing up and having a parade though.

  • If only he had been at the helm in 2014, Thailand would be a far, far better place than it is now for the people !

  • Wow, breath of fresh air,  no more coups, he is the first new chief to say/ think that in almost 100 years. If what has been said in another thread.... Planning the coup since 2010, appears Prayu

it makes sense to do this....5-10% fewer generals may not sound like a lot, but when you are dividing up the multi-millions of baht they scam from the system, thats serious money for the remaining generals

The redundant Generals could become Admirals and share the bounty generated by the submarine purchase. There will be more than enough to go around from that windfall.

Thailand, the hub of generals.

I'm sure if they stick at it they could end up at a world-beating 100 to one.

How much does it cost to become a general these days? Including the fake medals?

Will they get a refund?

My thoughts exactly. Well said.

So would I, with the amount of generals around he might have been lynched if he'd been there.

Does that include the Chinese submarines.

Good Luck! There will be no problem stripping a few from their undeserved ranks. However, create a higher efficiency is totally impossible. I do salute the man for having great dreams, though.

I really can't see him lasting long. Retreat to a monastery followed by an inactive post coming his way. If his ideas were enacted, who would run the country?

I hear that Burma is in need of some extra experienced generals right now, hey a jobs a job.

I think it would be much more than 50%, more like 75% given the current number of generals is 1700.For comparison Wiki states that for the United States the total number of active duty general officers is capped at 231 for the Army, 62 for the Marine Corps, 198 for the Air Force, and 162 for the Navy.

As to your comment about battle situations I'm not sure that's relevant since the purpose of the Thai army, the country having no enemies or even potential threats, is primarily to be involved in business for its senior officer corps.

And cue demand from the Army to the PM for advanced pension pay offs

The CinC post is mainly decorative, without any real power. Chief of Army is the real boss, and he wasn't at the meeting ...

The lower rungs who have paid there way up to just below General will not accept this.....

And I wonder how many commanders, sub-commanders, and so on?

Baby laughing.gif

Yes, if reducing the # of generals by 10%, then colonels should be reduced by 10% as well it seems ... then light birds, and majors as well.

Why is the RTP chief included in this meeting?  The RTP chief is a military position for real?

What would they do:

- Teach underwater swimming maybe?

Does a stand-in mean a cardboard cut out?
