Thai beauty queen fired as Mental Health Ambassador over political comments

Thailand’s Mental Health Department decided today (Tuesday) to drop Miss Universe Thailand 2020 Amanda Obdam as its brand ambassador over her online political comments, only after a week of her appointment.

Citing concerns over an intensifying political conflict in the country, the department’s abrupt action followed growing criticism of her appointment as the beauty queen continued to post comments in support of anti-establishment protests and criticism of police crackdown on her Instagram and Twitter since late last year.

The Mental Health Department and the organizing committee of Miss Universe Thailand signed an agreement on February 25, appointing Obdam as the brand ambassador, to promote the department’s efforts on mental health issues.

Obviously having your own opinion in Thai politics is frowned upon, you must tow the PM's party line.

The sum total of her "transgression"....

“How can we talk about love when there's still violence on the street?”

Honestly, the "government", when given options, ALWAYS chooses the WRONG path. And with every misstep makes the country look ridiculous.

The degree that they react actually adds support to their critics.  If they didnt react so strongly half the population would have no knowledge of the incident.

Yes, a marked increase of the use of the word "buffalo" has been noted.

I am sure Ms Obdam is a great person, but in what way does winning a beauty contest qualify someone to raise awareness of mental health?

The relentless pressure on Thai women to look good is almost certainly a driver of mental ill health (look at the number of cosmetic surgery clinics in Thailand), so a beauty queen seems a notably poor choice of brand ambassador

she was fired because she dared to defend a volunteer medic beaten unconscious by cops.

"In today’s news conference, Amanda stood by her remark and said human rights is a crucial issue.

“Democracy and human equality is a basic principle of humanity,” she said.

Amanda called out the police’s actions in a tweet published on Feb. 14, a day after a group of policemen were seen kicking and hitting a medic volunteer with their truncheons."
