Driving licenses in Thailand can now be renewed 6 months before expiry

Drivers in Thailand can now renew their licenses six months before it is due to expire.

According to a post on the Department of Land Transport (DLT) Facebook page, the period in which people can renew their licenses has been extended from three months to six months before expiry.

The move is to help reduce overcrowding at DLT offices.

Meanwhile, Sanook reported that owners of older vehicles - cars older than 7 years and motorcycles older than 5 years  - can now renew their annual car tax online, without the need to visit the local DLT office.

However, cars are still required to undergo a vehicle inspection at examination center.

Anyone who needs to renew their license can do so by booking a place  in an online queue.

DLT offers a Smart Queue facility for license renewals which can be downloaded on Android and iOS

I'm not sure that's true, not for 2-5 years anyway, if you go after your birthday but up to 3 months before expiry (now 6) you get the 6 years

100% true, my last 3 5 year licenses have all gotten me 6 years, last one was issued March 19th valid till march 15th 2027

if u got the day AFTER ur license expires, u get 5 years from ur next birthday,

Can anyone who reads Thai explain how this works and how you get the tax sticker/disc?

https://eservice.dlt.go.th/esvapp/login.jsf

Presumably it gets posted to you or are they actually going digital?

PHUKET:
take ur paperwork into the dlt and its never been more than a 10 minute wait to get ur tax sticker
Very efficient

Mine is due in 2 years time  I wont renew it They finally beat me the idiots on the road in Thailand Sick of blowing the horn screaming  and becoming a nervous wreck watching the idiots how they perform on the road Most of them would not even have license anyway

I call it saving my sanity by not driving anymore

Sorry not completely useless...I logged in with the GF ID and was able with her help (all in Thai) to make an appointment for my 5 year licence renewals in Chonburi....earliest date early July......saves me a ride over there at least.

Since when did you need a license to drive in Thailand?

The experiences will differ depending on date of application for the temporary license.

The temporary (2 year) license is valid exactly 2 years after issue unrelated to your birthday.

I have read the other week that Pattaya DL are doing exactly that.

If you go just after your birthday they make you do the test again??

Not sure how true that is.

How does that work?

Do you just need the Thai ID to access the site, then you input your own details after that?

Yes....but when you have registered it reverts back to Thai so you may need help with that...luckily I did (GF) and was able to book my appointment for 5 year Licence renewals.

I have never done a driving test, did do a written test ( in Thai) back in 1988.

The lady marked in pencil the correct answers for me.. ????

he was referring to waiting until expiry, but for 2 year to 5 year you don't need to

Wife has a lifetime licence from the old days--and she didn't even pay for it. Never behind the wheel since!

Has anyone here tried using the DLT app to get a queue for an appointment?

Yes, made an appointment back in August on the App, soonest available in Bangkok was 3 months later in November. So I just walked in with all my paperwork and got in que at 7:30 am.  In and out in 4 hours total with both licenses renewed. Appointments online are still out many months
