More COVID cases in Surat Thani?

Featured Replies

Any foreigners likely to be visiting Samui archipelago are likely to be fully vaccinated. As such they are less likely to catch the virus or transmit it.

However if they do pick up the virus from a local and have to quarantine either before they go home or on arriving home, they sint gonna be very happy with Thailands domestic precautions.

I find these Samui figures a bit mystifying over the past weeks......are they including the various schools on Samui that closed because of Covid?  - some of those you'd  have thought would have covid cases into three figures?

The last school that closed was because of one positive student, so far only two known positive results fra that school, but it's only a week ago the school closed, so more cases can theoretically show up.

Confirmed, no fatalities?

During the early days of Covid, it was suggested, by quite a few 'experts', that the virus did not like sunshine and heat. People were expecting increased 'waves' during the winter months in Europe and the west.

Recent numbers on the islands along with the the recent weather may suggest that this is correct?

I believe it’s less to do with heat but more to do with humidity level. The virus suspends itself in the air by attaching to water vapor droplets. The higher the humidity the larger the water droplets and the wicker they fall. There has been a lot of research done in this area. I work in a private hospital and when we had Covid patients several months ago we put humidifiers in the rooms and common areas were the Covid patients were to reduce the chances of airborne transmission. The northern winters can produce very cold dry air in which the virus can remain suspended for up to I believe 20 times longer than a relatively humid environment. The tendency to congregate more indoors in confined environments in winter probably contributes to spread also.

No - wet weather brings hope into closer proximity

I would be more concerned about the larger residential schools on Samui - e.g. International School of Tourism, Suratthani Rajabhat University or the Havana Bodighun college - they have hundreds of students and many in dormitories.

Bhavana had an outbreak some time ago, might be under control. Most students on Samui between 12 years and 18 years have by now been fully vaccinated with Pfizer, all have had the offer.
