BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister is optimistic that the Thai economy will continue to grow this year, despite being hit by a new wave of COVID-19, currently being controlled.

The Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri has asked members of the public to cooperate with the recently introduced measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 in this new wave.

The government yesterday adjusted epidemic control measures and updated the control status of each province according to the number of cases, in the hope of bringing down the number of new cases quickly.

Mr Anucha disclosed the Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is confident the Thai economy this year will keep growing, thanks to the vaccination program.

Thailand has ordered at least 63 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, plus 10 million more to be ordered for use at public hospitals and as alternative options to state-provided vaccines provided at private hospitals. The country is now planning to vaccinate at least 35 million people in the course of this year.

The government has reserved some 380 billion baht for economic recovery, with 240 billion from emergency loans. The government still has 98.5 billion baht available for essential advance payments, and 36.8 billion baht for pandemic mitigation.

The government spokesman said the government will continue to introduce economic stimuli which correspond to the present situation, and efficient procurement which must yield the highest benefits to the people.

I just caught a glimpse of "PM positive".

My hopes were dashed when I read the thread title properly ????

Of course being "essential" he's had his jab. Astrazeneca IIRC, one can only hope this clot gets one.

Should have said the Government has 140bnTHB with another 240bnTHB in emergency loans to draw-down if needed (he didn't say where these come from but I suspect China knows something about that).

Not looking quite so healthy after a slight adjustment of the wording... and only 37bnTHB to combat what will be the epidemic of the century. I suspect it's not enough or anything like enough.

Time to empty their own pockets of the brown envelope money and return the happiness to Thailand and remove happiness from their Mia Nois' and such.

total hypocrisy when you consider that they are responsible for this covid wave by telling everyone to travel over songkran, they are total idiots and have no idea what they are doing as it all revolves around money and not the best thing for the thai people, bloody useless hypocrites

Their definition of 'currently being controlled' must be very different from my own definition.

PM positive......I can only imagine he has been rubbing himself (maybe in Krystal's) with party balloons....

Like to call him 87 - like the guy in Alien3 (after his IQ) - but fear that's a bit ambitious for ole cha-cha.

Estimate vaccination programme if sufficient vaccines available will take at least 6 months therefore International Tourism unlikely to resume until well into 2022 with loss peak season. If economy will grow in the meantime Thailand's GDP  will overtake China. Good luck.

This whole vaccination business will prove to be a Thai-style foul-up.

Thais ought/need to wake up to what nowseems to me to be undeniable. This government is corrupt from top to bottom, and the extent of it's incompetence is breathtaking. .Hardly surprising given who the government works for I know, but disappointing none-the-less and not a good sign at all for the future

Maybe money available is from the same source as small business soft loans that never made it to small businesses.

PM says due to vaccine program, which one is that ?

government did nothing for small business, no tax cuts, no tax breaks , no tax refunds , no loans , absolutely nothing .

no idea why or how he thinks economy will grow

All Thai governments corrupt but previous governments at least allowed others to make some money , where as this one takes it all

And unlike other governments, ensures it is funnelled upwards

You are right of course, this is the dividend to his sino-Thai masters of keeping the Thai (non-Sino-Thai) people poor, stupid and under-educated. This is the dividend, they wil the loyalty of the people by being seen as vassals of the most-high. Yes, it's iniquitous, yes it's bizarre, yes the international community should reject Prayuth and all things Thai (and are now beginning to do so). The Thai economy is in free-fall and will collapse. Big changes are on the horizon and there is little that Prayuth or his masters can do about it. That's why he is now allegedly worth more than 1bnTHB on an annual salary of 1 million THB. He is at least smart enough to see the writing on the wall, which is why he has come down so hard on the protestors. But here's the rub. They will win and he and his will lose.

Lets see if this post is deleted. If it is, then we (the English-speaking community) all have a much bigger problem than we thought.

Upwards indeed. but the key to this mess is where upwards it is funneled to. Make hay while the sun shines because the whole house of cards is beginning to fall and the time for nest-feathering grows shorter.

And so do I. A good call on your part.

"Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is confident the Thai economy this year will keep growing, thanks to the vaccination program"

Given the continuous drop in economic activities week after week, its has to see some growth at least during one of the weeks...

And mine. Unless the COVID-19 dividend we are now seeing was exactly what was intended to ensure another 50 years of compliance and hero-worship. Perhaps not everything is as it seems.
