BANGKOK (NNT) - To achieve the government’s target of acquiring 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses this year, Director of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), Dr. Nakorn Premsri, says the Ministry of Public Health is now in talks with a number of vaccine manufacturers.

The Ministry of Public Health held a meeting with AstraZeneca, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, to follow up on vaccine production by Siam Bioscience. AstraZeneca has completed the technology transfer, and two batches of vaccine samples have passed quality tests. The vaccine production and distribution remains on schedule, and the doses should be ready in June.

Concerning reports of Pfizer offering to sell 13 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Thailand, using a buy now, pay later deal, and that the government rejected the offer after being approached by the company four times, Dr. Nakorn said these reports are not entirely true.

After having checked the issue with Pfizer, Dr. Nakhon explained that the proposal to sell 13 million doses was submitted to the company’s headquarters to prepare for a meeting with the Ministry of Public Health.

Therefore, such a figure has not been proposed to Thailand. It is only an estimate, in accordance with last year’s vaccine procurement plan, which is set at inoculating 10 percent of the population.

There is no buy now, pay later deal with Pfizer. The company has presented research information to the NVI and the Department of Disease Control (DDC) on a regular basis, and the government has never turned down any meeting with its representatives.

The government has also been informed that its vaccine can be used in children over 12 years old. With proper logistics and storage, the government is confident of ordering the Pfizer vaccine to be used in the country.

There are plenty of people in Thailand - both Thais and expats- who are willing and able to pay a premium for the Pfizer vaccine. Just order it already.

Watching the English version of the CCSA Covid briefing I was under the impression that any Pfizer vaccine would be used on those of school age, I don't know how many school kids there are in Thailand but would 10 - 15 million jabs cover it and would there be any left over for those oldies who might wanna buy it ?

Ahh more deflection and blather, the UK has just confirmed a further 60 million doses of Pfizer for their autumn booster shots

The vaccinations are out there but they are not free and there is no scope for brown paper bags or backhanders, that's why Thailand has no vaccines...
