Thailand reports daily record of 9,635 new COVID-19 cases, including jail cluster

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported on Monday a daily record of 9,635 new coronavirus cases, including 6,853 infections among prisoners from jail clusters, as the Southeast Asian country struggles with a third wave of infections.

The combined cases bring the country's total infections to 111,082.

Thailand's COVID-19 task force also recorded 25 new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities to 614 since the pandemic started last year.

Excluding the jail clusters, Monday's new cases of 2,782 are close to a record high of 2,839 recorded late last month.

Thailand has administered 2.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to frontline workers and high-risk groups so far using imported doses of vaccines developed by China's Sinovac Biotech and AstraZeneca.

A broader vaccination drive is expected to start in June with locally manufactured AstraZeneca doses. Vaccine registration opened to the public this weekend with a goal of inoculating 70 percent of adults in the country of more than 66 million people.

Kaboom, there you have it.  The jails, well many of them have reported.  Lets hope they can get a handle on it.  It is not just inmates, everyone that works in or around the facilities are at risk.  Get the vaccinations rolling out. 2782 cases also not related to the prisons, so that number keeps on rolling.  Waiting to see that breakdown of where those cases are throughout Thailand, but of course at least half may be in Bangkok with the newly found clusters amongst construction workers camps.

The general population count of 2,782 new cases reported Monday, excluding the new prison cases, is the second highest tally ever for Thailand. The only higher tally came April 24 when 2,839 new cases were reported. Most of the new general population cases continue to be from Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Bangkok alone set a new record of 1,843 new cases reported on Monday.

The new prison cases boosted Thailand's population of COVID patients held in various kinds of hospital facilities (hospitals, field hospitals and hotel-hospitals) to a record 43,268 (shown in the light blue box above). The number of COVID cases in critical condition declined by two to 1,226, while the share of those requiring ventilators to breathe declined by eight to 400.

Regarding the prison cases, Thailand's Ministry of Public Health has now reported a total of 10,748 COVID cases (6,853 today and 3,895 prior) among inmates at eight different prisons, mostly in the Bangkok and Chiang Mai regions in the past five days, as follows:

Monday -- 6,853

plus 3,895 prior cases of

Saturday -- 877

Friday -- 183

Thursday -- 2,835

A government spokesman said the prison cases were the result of testing of more than 24,000 inmates and staff conducted at the various prisons from May 1 to May 16. But the MoPH only began publicly reporting the results of those tests beginning last Thursday.

Khaosod English is reporting a slightly lower tally from the Corrections Department, as follows, giving the positive COVID cases out of inmate totals, including the largest single group coming in Chiang Mai:

"Nearly 10,000 cases were discovered in prisons over the past few days, according to the Department of Corrections.
- Bangkok Remand: 1,960 out of 3,023
- Central Women's Correctional Institution: 1,039 out of 4,448
- Klong Prem: 1,016 out of 8,088
- Thonburi: 1,725 out of 4,015
- Chachoengsao: 43 out of 2,671
- Central Institute for Drug Addicts: 12 out of 5,876
- Nonthaburi: 59 out of 2,661
- Chiang Mai: 3,929 out of 6,469"

The latest rolling seven-day averages of new COVID cases and new COVID deaths for Thailand updated through May 15, prior to today's record increase of new prison cases and second highest daily total of general population cases.

The seven-day averages show new COVID cases reaching another record high level of 2,553, spurred by the previously reported prison cases, and daily deaths declining slightly to just over 26.

So 2,782 outside of prisons. Now up to 91 possibly 90 with a bullet on the covid wordometer. Up 26 0r 27 spots in a couple of months. Who thinks that 6,853 prisoners is the tip of the iceberg.

Yes.

Songkran did not bring a major increase in cases in the provinces. Paradoxically, the post Songkran surge has been mostly confined to the Bangkok area.

Proves that statistics given by the Thai government are not worth the paper they are written on. How many other cases of falsification and sweeping bad news under the carpet are there ? Temples and orphanages next ?

  • Popular Post

Current official response to this, easing of measures!!

Now try a full lockdown as you should have done at the start or be prepared for far worse to come. Disastrous news on all fronts.

Unfortunately, the number of prison infections is going to be very high. The upside is there won’t be many deaths. The downside may be clusters in the populated areas around the prisons.

You are reacting to publication of bad news by the government by claiming they are sweeping bad news under the rug?

So all of those provinces which never had a case until Songkran, did not obtain even one case over the Songkran period, is that what your trying to say.  Better re-think that one.

How do you know there won't be many deaths and more importantly how do you know there haven't already been before their cover up was outed.

But I guess when the real infection rate in the prisons are known out of a total prison population of 330,000 and the apparent high rates of infection, then the total figures in the prison population would be astronomical I expect.  And just think they are in contact with warders, passing it on to visitors, delivery people etc and who else ?

But Thailand has done an amazing job...

But motorcycle deaths are much higher...

But Thailand is testing according to WHO recommendations...

But Thailand is doing great compared to the rest of the world...

But the virus has peaked and should go down in the next week...

But these cases are only in prisons and not worth worrying about...

Almost 10% increase in 1 day.

But...what's the next excuse?

If there were only a way to contain and isolate infecteds in the prison system.

Kalsain went from 0 to 96 with 1 death following Songkran. This occured across Thailand. Do you not remember Covid now in all provinces. Almost 100% increase in Kalasin but I guess you know best.

Don't mention the Temples. 300,000 Monks walking around with their begging bowls every morning. Mainly it is the poorer folk putting food into their bowls every morning with their bare hands, amassing how little they care about the folk getting infected

and they still expect foreigners to pile into enclosed spaces like immigration to do various things

I wonder how many have left recently back to their own countries - I personally know of quite a few and here we are during the exodus Thailand thinks they will be flooding here in July lol - not until you get your dirty house in order and get serious about effective vaccines - that is the only way you will unlock this country

Hello, what planet are you living on? Certainly not the same 1 as the rest of us. Surge confined to Bangkok, dream on, 2 young boys in the next Issan village came home for songkran, along with their mother, mother has died with covid, boys in hospital.

Apart from clusters in Bangkok, and in the prison system, the epidemic seems to be receding.

I have noticed that there aren’t that many people walking around outside these days. So, people are staying home more, which reduces transmission of the virus.

96 cases in a month is not that many.

If the Doomsayers had been more precise in stating that post-Songkran Doom would be 96 cases in a province, they may have seemed more reasonable.
