Koh Samui: Three British pensioners, one other, arrested with Thais for illegal drinking

What is so ridiculous about arresting people who were drinking illegally in a bar during the Covid restrictions that everyone else has to comply with?   If they were allowed to get away with it why not let everyone pile into the bars for a few scoops?

To beat a dead horse. lets say they were all drinking diet coke.  How is that any more or less risky.  This notion that somehow serving alcohol contributes to the spread of Covid is just nonsense.   Why only pick on the bars?  Why not stop any all all social contact.  No gas stations, no restaurants, no open government offices, no supermarkets, no hardware stores etc.   Covid only spreads in bars where alcohol is served and no place else?

Well that aint gonna  happen with plod behaving like that. That said what a terrible despicable bunch drinking together, lock em up, throw away the key, that will teach em.????????????????????

  • Ok. Irrespective of my beliefs , law is the law, so if one breaks it then tough luck . But problem I have is why make arrests and such a fuss. This is not criminal offence . So you caught them breakin

  • No doubt by now this article has already been sent to the BBC and others' news sites.

"This is not criminal offence".

Yes, it is.

Are you sure? To be so, a law must have been discussed and passed in Parliament and then published in the Royal Gazette.

Yes, I'm sure, Thailand is subject to an Emergency Decree re Covid at the moment.

If it wasn't law, people couldn't be arrested and fined.

In fact it should be 5 Thais nabbed for drinking with 3 British pensioners

No, four of each in total but they weren't all drinking at the same place.

Clearly you know nothing about the underhand workings of the police here.

I have and have been arrested/ fined/ jailed, for defending myself after getting stabbed.

Cannot believe the "younger" one was hangin' out with these two old fellas.....there was one other npt sure of his age ....troublemakers....haaaa

The only thing that makes this "illegal" is that they were drinking a beer and having a glass of wine and that act while presently illegal does not make that action any more risky than if they were sitting together with nothing to drink.

Rest assured, you don't have to condescendingly walk me through anything.

You're right, the thing that made it illegal was the consumption of alcohol, illegally, in a bar that was not permitted to be serving alcohol.   That's why they were arrested.    I have made no comment about the risk as far as health is concerned, nor how sensible the law is, maybe address that point to those posters who have.

Recently I've been in a few restaurants in the evening where people know me and they ask if I want a beer, I always say no thanks Im not getting a 5000 baht fine over a 70 baht beer and you get fined also, Thanks but no Thanks,

There's plenty of them around for those who want to imbibe.

Beat the dead horse with someone else, I have made no comment about the infection-spreading risks involved.

This is a very childish law dictated by a government that is determined to bring this country its knees.  No alcohol in restaurants, bars forbidden, anything that brings a smile to tourists - forbidden.  Really!

Also, these 'perp pics' that plod pose for are supposedly forbidden by RT Police High Command years ago.

But, TIT baby.

It is identifying by parading arrestees in public that is banned (officially) and all these people had their identity hidden by having their faces obscured.

The Bo Phut police site announced the arrest of three British pensioners and one other British national breaking laws regarding the consumption of alcohol and congregating promulgated on May 23rd. Five Thais were also nabbed.

As they bust these hardened criminals for daring to drink, plans are underway to welcome thousands of rich foreign tea-teetotaling tourists who plan to do nothing but stay in their hotel rooms while masked and watch NetFlix.

"Did it also say that all of the murders, assaults, rapes etc were completed attended to..."

Which murders, assaults, rapes, etc., that were happening at the same time?

"...arresting 3 old men who if they were endangering anyone, they were endangering themselves".

No, it's not just that.  The point is that they were also endangering anyone that they and the Thai owner had contact with afterwards, and anyone else that they subsequently had contact with, ad infinitum.   Don't you understand how infections spread?

You are talking as if they are known Covid carriers!

You really think the Junta boss was actually fined?????

He sure was not arrested

During the current restrictions, drinking alcohol with their mates, served to them in a bar that was not allowed to serve alcohol, sure was a criminal offence.   That's why they were arrested.

"As for your Prayut comment, even more pathetic than the rest, What is more dangerous drinking with  3 buddies in isolation or walk around without a mask spreading the virus?"

Huh?  Shouldn't you have said, "what is more dangerous drinking with 3 buddies (not in isolation, obviously, there were four people there) spreading the virus" or do you think that is it only Prayut who can spread the virus?

"Best you find another place to spout your nonsense"

Would that be because you object to viewpoints that differ from yours?  Best you realise that this is a public forum.  You do know the meaning of the word "forum" and the reason for its existence?

They do not own the bar , surely you able to comprehend that

would it not be better to allow people to drink outside in the open air (with some rules) than doing it in confined spaces like bars behind closed shutters with no ventilation

But that's not the point.  All Thai governors understand that Covid-19 swims in alcoholic drinks. That's common knowledge just like malls and restaurants are Covid safe but schools and bars are not.  The ruling elite are doing their darnedest to protect the commoners against the folly of drinking farangs by holding them up for public scorn and ridicule.  Thai commoners must be prepared to snitch when dirty, smelly drinking foreigner arrive on July 1st.  They may mistakenly wish to relax during their vacations with a beer on the beach with friends and family!!!  But no no no farang tourists!  Here is your fate should you attempt such egregious crimes:

<que Freddie Mercury and Queen>
"We will, we will, arrest you! - Say it again - We will, we will, arrest you!"
So it's "Away away with rum by gum, the song of the Thai Temperance Union" and foreigners need to be shown their places!  In jail and deported.  Just leave your money first.

I truly can not think of a more fitting Preview Of Coming Attractions for those contemplating a "relaxing vacation" in Thailand:
Eg1.jpg.733cd86f9b3d580cf687ce90e736d395.jpg

Masks, prohibition, and house arrest otherwise actual arrest, incarceration, fines, and deportation.  There's a combination to inspire the foreign tourist to flock to the shores of Temperance Thailand.

Fake news. No one is pointing !

Simple for people to understand. Wife whats to go on vacation once all this covid lets up.  Samui and some place are not going to be on the list. Let's see how does once the foreigners are let in again, not so good I bet. There are Law's and there people that should make sound good decisions on how to enforce them. This a clear case of look who we found breaking the Law. Really does not play well.

Real trouble-lookin' them. Hooligans no doubt.

Best kept off the streets as they might again be found committing the crime of...enjoying themselves!

UGH ????
