PHUKET: A pedestrian walking across a central reservation on Thepkrasattri Rd in Srisoonthorn yesterday evening (June 8 ) narrowly escaped being mowed down by a car and pickup truck that had mounted the traffic island and slammed into a palm tree.

The accident occurred on the northbound lanes at about 5:50pm some 100 metres from the offices of Srisoonthorn Municipality.

The pickup truck, a silver-coloured Isuzu D-Max pickup registered in Phuket, had run a red light at the Darasamut Intersection near the Central shopping mall some 13 kilometres to the south, reported Lt Col Pongpipat Kamchomphu of the Thalang Police.

Run a red light at warp speed to be more accurate ????

Pedestrian was wearing big amulet, both drivers weren't. Case closed. Next.

With all the road carnage its surely time to start confiscating vehicles...

Some switched on puppy will of course point out that confiscating a vehicle will make no difference in this case, the vehicle is already scrap... But, the preventative measure may have resulted in this tool not running the light in the first place.

Enforcement, or rather the lack of it is the major enabler of all these idiots riding and driving around with a sense of impunity.

Totally agree about lack of enforcement and it hasn't changed in the 15 yrs that  I have been here.........seems that the BIB are not bright enough to learn from their mistakes, or too lazy to do anything about them.

Enforcement or Confiscation is not an Asian thing really, would just be  further tea money devices...... far better to BAN the statistical top vehicle killers starting with All Mopeds below 130cc .......50 lives a day saved right there.....moving on perhaps to (Empty / Overloaded )Pick Ups ( which ALWAYS seem to be EMPTY or Overloaded in back ......status BS or what ?)

What are you suggesting? I have been riding a scooter here for best part of 20 years. No accidents. Mind you that could be because I stop at  red traffic lights and junctions. Don't speed or drive on the opposite side of the road (or pavements). It's my only form of transport and you want to take it away from me. Better just to enforce the laws that we-have.

better for you perhaps......

talking the common good using stats.

we all know meaningful enforcement will never happen

In addition, it might be high time that Insurance companies stop paying for damages resulting from drivers running red lights, driving at death wish speeds, and when evidence shows that the driver was on his mobile phone at the time of an accident.

Insurance companies must stop treating all accidents as just accidents...
