Thailand’s state funded quarantine option may be withdrawn from July 1st

The Thai government is considering withdrawing the state funded quarantine option for international arrivals by air from July 1st, citing its cost.

The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) decided on the plan at a meeting in late March, because far fewer people have been arriving from abroad compared to the pre-pandemic period, while some have taken advantage of the facility by flying in and out many times, said CCSA sub-committee chief and National Security Council Secretary-General Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanich.

If state supported quarantine is withdrawn, people arriving in Thailand by air will need to quarantine in paid Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotels instead, which means booking prior to arrival, he said, adding that state quarantine may remain in place for those arriving in Thailand by land.

Now I know who has benefitted from the plush 5 star amenity filled State sponsored quarantine facilities.  Wow, dog and pony show now it seems.

  • Why ?

  • They should allow Thais, who are returning for their first repatriation since COVID restrictions began, one free SQ. IMO. Or put them up in the lower-tier ASQ hotels, free of charge.

Govt to Close State Quarantine Facilities

Untitaaaled-2-1.jpg

BANGKOK (TNA) – The government’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration will close state quarantine facilities next month because they are a financial burden of the state.

Revealing the plan, Gen Nattapon Nakpanich, secretary-general of the National Security Council, said the center would propose their closure on July 1 to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha due to the financial concern.

CCSA would have arrivals pay for their own quarantine at alternative state quarantine facilities at reasonable prices, he said.

New Zealand originally provided free quarantine for its returning citizens in all circumstances, but then subsequently placed restrictions on it because of the huge cost. It is still free if you remain for 180 days I think. So, if you live there permanently it is effectively free for you in most cases, but if you reside in another country and just make a short visit then you have to pay.

Not for Thai Nationals.  They have the right to return no matter what, however, many have been returning illegally to avoid the 14 day quarantine 5 star facilities....

Wow! I had never heard of a free government option.

Have any TVers actually done this?

Only if they are Thai citizens. Not sure if it was available to permanent residents but I dont think so.

So happy that the government is now offering REASONABLE cost for quarantine for Thai citizens. Which probably means that the cost charged to foreigners so far has been UNREASONABLE?

In your dreams, haha! I did a 'cheap' quarantine in BKK and that cost me Bt. 36,000 (last week!)!

Land borders are closed except to those who qualify to come in.

Very cheap compared to the mandatory UK quarantine which is for UK nationals as well.

It applies to any member that may have a Thai partner that is currently out of the country or travels frequently.

People could be excused for thinking that Thailand has no money.

Except for a select few.

Slow vaccines rollout.

And now government assisted quarantine facilities to close.

I think it is fair. Thais were traveling abroad during pandemic, then returning to 2 weeks all paid holiday in state quarantine. If someone was returning that left Thailand before March 2019, I would understand, but for someone who went for a holiday last month and returned, expecting Thai government to pay for 2 weeks lock up, I think it's abusing the situation.

Yes, I agree with their plan. Everyone returning to Thailand should be paying for ASQ. No matter Thai or non-Thai.

It should just have been done a year ago.

More BS in truth they are running out of money you only have to see the amount of borrowing over the last few months This time next year Thailand is going to be in deep deep trouble and these incompetent fools haven't got a clue how to avert it .

Slight difference in cost of living between the two countries, I guess?

I would only wish that the government would allow home quarantine for those residents who enter the country with valid proof of vaccination - that would allow those of us who will probably wait until October or later to get vaccinated in Thailand, to leave, get vaccinated and then return to Thailand without having to go thru the onerous quarantine restrictions - but I won't hold my breath!  ????
