how to stop snakes coming in the gate area

Featured Replies

In our new house we have concrete fences all aound the property, the back fence & side fence near the dirt road are at leat 18" high with wire above that, the front and other side fence are concrete right up. The only open area is where the sliding gate is, it is opposite palm oil trees and  near rubber trees, we have had a couple of snakes come through it and I am trying to get a way to stop them as I am worried the dogs or one of us  may get bitten. The gate slides on the inside of the fence and is made up of open steel bars , wondering if I can attach cement sheet etc to it to just off the ground and if it would work, has anyone had a similar  problem

Snakes can easily climb your concrete walls.    You won't keep them out.     As another poster said, just keep the garden grass cut short and have no hiding places for the snakes.

An 18 inch high wall will not stop  any snack of some length.  I have   170cms high fences on  side and back walls,  , across the  front,  about 20 inches high, with..   wrought iron   fencing on top,.Ive had snakes come over the front  wall several times, as well as under the  sliding gate. Luckily, my two dogs   gang up  and kill them,  though  I   had to deal with a small cobra before the dogs got near it.

Snakes can slither under some pretty slim openings..I doubt that would work.

The thing with snakes is that if they are determined to go somewhere, there is little you can do to stop them. The best thing you can do is keep any grass nearby well maintained and as short as possible. Make sure there's no places for snakes to hide.. they tend to not like flat open ground as it puts them at risk of being attacked from above (ie birds). Remove any debris from the area or anywhere that might make a place look attractive for a snake to camp out. Even then you'll still get some..

Unfortunately the trees nearby mean they'll usually at least be tree snakes hanging around. They eat everything like mice, lizards, frogs and eggs. If you remove any source of potential food they'll be less likely to hang out but it's an almost impossible task. I just found it easier to catch them when I can and release them in the jungle down the road. There aren't many venomous snakes in Thailand and it's not common to encounter them.

If you post a photo of the area you'll trying to snake proof I might be able to give you some more useful suggestions.

As another poster said, just keep the garden grass cut short and have no hiding places for the snakes. They won't feel safe and will leave.

If you see one just leave it alone. It will go away quickly.

Most snake bites happen when people are trying to kill or catch the snake..

Sharp Gravels,

Sulfur powder or bricks that comes in long yellow cylinder that you can break up in pieces and spinkle over the area seem to repel them

I had a photo, can't find it at the moment, of a snake that I found scaling my vertical garden wall. How it achieved this phenomenal  feat was by squeezing itself around a 90deg wall section. You ain't gonna stop snakes other than by letting your dogs sort out the problem. Or maybe 'snake repellant from Lazada..

All the replies are correct, can't stop a snake from entering...

...unless you scatter broken glass for a few feet all around your wall and gateway.

my cat kills anything thing that moves.

my property is completely devoid of all lifeforms.

I had a couple in the garden, moto bike and the house. They use trees and plants to get in. One entered by the hole drilled for the cable TV. after that cable was removed. (30 -40 cm long thin snake)

Stand a shovel against the gatepost. They should get the picture, and quickly do a u turn.

Learn to live with them, 99%  they will be harmless snakes,

as someone else says, keep the grass short , look online

for venomous snakes that occur in your area, so you can

tell between  harmless snakes and dangerous ones ,and

refrain from killing the harmless ones.....please

How?   Do they carry a sign or something?

I take it that you are stationary most of the time then.

You go online and Google Thai snakes, take a bit time to study

the venimouse ones, there are not that many, easy to recognize

a Pit Viper , its head, a Krait , its triangular shape and bands, Cobras

colour ,hood, that's the main ones, better than killing harmless snakes

just because they come into your space,.the most dangerous one is

the trouser snake it can get you into all kinds of trouble ????

If the snake is determined to get you, there are only a couple of things you could do.

One is get a mongoose as a pet. Best to get one as a baby and train it not to bite yer legs.

And secondly; get a snake that eats other snakes, but will not harm humans. There is one in the US called a 'king brown' or something.

I would concur with most of the info in your post, with the exception of your statement "There aren't many venomous snakes in Thailand and it's not common to encounter them".

FYI....  There are in fact over 230 different species of snakes that are found in Thailand according to the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute in Bangkok which produces anti venom serum from it's snake farm in Bangkok.  Of these, some 40 species are considered to be highly dangerous because of the toxicity of their venom.   Whilst the rest are often deemed to me non-venomous, many do in fact have venom which is only mildly toxic to humans.

According to the Red Cross (Thailand) some 7,000 plus people required anti venom treatment during 2019.   The most prolific and dangerous snake which can be found throughout Thailand is the monocled cobra and it account for most of the  recorded snake bites in Thailand.  The monocled cobra can grow to 2 meters long and is a fast mover and can be very aggressive when disturbed.

My wife and I live on the Western outskirts of Bangkok in a semi urban environment and we regularly encounter snakes around the outside of our house, the latest being a 1 meter monocled cobra just last week.   Having attended a training course at the Red Cross snake farm in Bangkok, I am able to safely catch these 'monsters' and re-home them away from human habitation.   I've attached below a photo of a baby cobra which was outside my front door a couple of years ago.  It's only about 30 cm long but is 'fully loaded' with enough venom to stop an elephant.

Kill the snakes and maybe the dogs with this stuff?

Heard a kafuffle in the bathroom of an earlier house, it had those open louver type blocks, maybe 1.6 mts from the ground, on opening the door there was a snake chasing a rat around. Shut the door and left them to it. after no trace of either.
