60 Baht and 25 Setang

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Just been to a Tesco lotus and my bill came to 60 Baht and 25 Setang .

I gave the cashier 60 Baht and she looked at me and held her hand out waiting for the 25 Setang .

I gave her a five Baht coin and she gave me 4 Baht change and closed the till.

I stood there and held my hand out , waiting for the 75 Setang .

She had to call the manager to open the till .

Getting the correct change back would actually make the cash register to be correct , at the end of the day .     If Tesco lotus  wont disregard 25 Setang , why should I disregard 75 Setang ?

Maybe she gets to keep any overage? Call it a tip or a service charge lol. She did that a hundred times a day it a 7+ baht tip.

she didn't do it to make the register correct - she did it because you were acting like an $%^&^%&^% and all for a penny.... the register being a bit over is not a problem... and she probably didn't care at that point...

it's not a great job, why make it more difficult and confrontational?

But you know this right?

No , Tips are given voluntarily .

This was a case of deliberately giving people the wrong change and possibly keeping the access .

   This was attempted theft

Possible, but to be certain you'd need to know if she was following training (so Tesco are the theives) or she was showing a bit of initiative.

Either way all Tesco have to do is take satang off every price.

Its the age old argument of "principal" not the amount involved.

Forget the amount, they wanted you to lose 3 x more than they would.

The question/issue actually would never have arisen if the correct full amount was paid to start with.

Tesco Lotus were acting like $%^&^%&^% by sticking 25 Setang onto an item and keeping the 75 Setang change .

If they did they regularly , they would make a huge profit .

For every thousand customers , they would make and profit 75 000 Satang

They don't get me. Always have some copper in my little "coin bag" :>)

If there is a queue I will abstain from picking for the coins.

At 7/11 they are quite happy when I just empty the coins to the desk for self service.

At Makro only 1000/500/100.

I think Thais are hoarding thousands of tons of coins :>)

I put all the coins I receive in my pockets. And at home I take them out of my pockets. And then my girlfriend puts them in jars and whenever she visits her family up country she takes those jars with her. That money is then used for the kids for school, etc.

75 satang one hundred times = 75 baht tip. A decent meal.

I had a jar full of satang.  I put them all in a plastic bag and gave it to an old lady who begs in my neighborhood.  She took the bag, studied it, then looked back up at me with a look that was clearly not one of gratitude.

They did away with 25 satangs a while back and brought them back again because people complained.

I was just off out getting my ingredients to make a coffee first thing in the morning .

I am not in the best of moods before having my first coffee , especially when I need to go out to buy the ingredients

Yes , I completely agree with your stance on this issue and the manager was probably in on it as well.

I hope that you have performed your civic duty and filed a police report , this shady behaviour has to be stamped out once and for all.

Enjoy your coffee now and have a nice day...

So it is like bitcoin mining, only for who? Is it for the caissière or the company?

Would  Charoen Pokphand Group be happy with it? Did they put up this scam then?

Could be. My tax collector (government) also wants every cent if you have to pay, on the other hand they dont pay if you have a refund from them up  to a certain limit.

In the beginning (2000) we had 1 cent , 2 cent coins, they disappeared very quickly after introduced.

It costed more, making them and copper could be used otherwise. So it would be crazy for Thailand to have these coins.

You can collect them in jars to do something with it, however sellers want them? Mostly you cant use them.

Showed once when i was on a parking place in CM, someone emptied his coin tray and there were about 20 coins, satangs, lying around.

I am amazed that anyone can go shopping at Tesco Lotus and only run up a bill of 60 Baht.

That's why the cashier asked for 60 baht and twenty five satang.

It's no longer Tesco Lotus, it's now Lotus's's's's (or something like that) ????

Coin collecting pays for my trips to Thailand. Here in the Land of the Rising Fun, coins go up to 500 yen, which is close to US$5 or about 160 baht.  They add up quickly.  Bills start at 1000 yen (320 baht).

Why do shops/supermarkets still price sertang into their goods!? Maybe for this very reason... they just expect each customer to not ask for their exact change back... multiply that per customer, per day, per branch and you got yourself a nice little earner!!!

Might take long to extinguish the name.

Many of the medium/provincial malls have not been renamed at the front gates etc.

At our medium  size Lotus's they replaced(!) all shopping carts with brand new carts.

Not even wasting a thought about just exchanging the prints on the handles.

60.25/60.00 = 1.004167

0.004167 * 14.3 billion USD = 59 million USD.

I am happy to get the saved change.

(14.3 billion USD = worth of Dhanin Chearavanont)

(I know it's a "bit simplified" :>)
