Sinovac’s Vaccine Found Inferior to Pfizer Shot in Chile Study
By Jason Gale
July 7, 2021, 9:17 PM EDT Updated on July 8, 2021, 6:30 PM EDT

Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s vaccine was less potent than Pfizer Inc.’s at stopping Covid-19 in Chile where the two shots were used simultaneously, allowing the first real-world comparison of the two inoculations. China’s CoronaVac was 66% effective in preventing Covid among fully vaccinated adults, compared with 93% or the jab made by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech SE.

The research shows both shots protect against severe disease. Sinovac’s inactivated inoculation, given to more than 10 million Chileans, was slightly less effective in preventing hospitalization and deaths than Pfizer’s messenger RNA vaccine, which was administered to fewer than half a million people, according to the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

I actually think it’s useful that there is competition among the multiple vaccine manufacturers because we will ultimately get better products that way.  The Thai government should have known a long time ago that the mRNA vaccines would be superior.  It was complete insanity to ever put faith (and money) in the Chinese vaccines.

To be fair, initially all the eggs were in the local AZ basket. Also insanity, or at least high risk in terms of sufficient supply. Then it was the Chinese vaccine insanity.

In the early days surely vaccine supplies should have been spread, then focus on the best performers? They were all so new 12 months ago.

anyway, given that there is adequate financial and intellectual capacity in the world to pursue multiple vaccine paths, clearly there is an advantage to doing that. Having only one vaccine and then along comes a strain that it is ineffective against, wouldn’t be so great. At least with multiple vaccines, some might still be effective, as is the case currently with delta

Does "keep distance to walk up and down" mean don't use the elevators (that's assuming your building has them)?

This is Google Thai translation from the Thai side. It could well mean travelling up and down in the lift.

Army files defamation complaint against social media users over “fake news”

Following rumours spread on social media saying Thai soldiers travelling to the US for Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines when they were actually going overseas for parachute training, the Royal Thai Army filed a defamation complaint against 9 people who allegedly spread the so-called “fake news.”

A representative from the army filed a complaint with the Nang Loeng police station yesterday on chief Gen Narongpan Jittkaewtae’s behalf. 8 of the people named in the complaint face charges for posts made on Facebook while the other used Twitter, a source told the Bangkok Post, adding that more people will also face charges.

Oh no here we go right down the rabbit hole.  This does get ridiculous to see this idiotic way they try to save FACE.

I was referring to the first shot you may have missed that in connection with a second shot of AZ:

A study in Chile, which has one of the furthest-advanced vaccination campaigns in South America -- mainly with China's Coronavac, has found that a first dose alone does not protect against coronavirus infection.

The study by the University of Chile found inoculation to be 56.5 percent effective in protecting recipients two weeks after the second dose, and 27.7 percent effective within the first two weeks.

But for a single dose, efficacy in the 28 days between the first and second dose was only three percent -- on par with the margin of error in such studies, it said.

Nice to see no over-reaction.  A friend of mine had a family member test positive and the Juristic Office went a bit mental and wanted to move the whole family out!

Ergo why our floor was sent to be tested yesterday, maybe they have connections with the BMA where we are...

From a Thai perspective, it also seems  Delta is the main issue, not alpha or gamma. Although alpha is still producing cases of course.

In the past week or so, there have been a whole slew of reports by various Thai medical researchers talking about the immunity levels they have found over time in blood test subjects who've had two Sinovac doses and then other variations.

The latest I saw in the week was one such researcher claiming re the Delta virus variant that two doses of Sinovac followed by a booster of AZ (the government's current plan for most medical workers) would confer much greater protective immunity than two Sinovac doses alone.

But the same report by the same researcher said the Sino/AZ regimen would still provide less protection than two regular AZ doses.

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-study-finds-2-doses-of-sinovac-cant-beat-delta-variant-astrazeneca-can/

"The study reveals that two doses of Sinovac, plus a booster dose of AstraZeneca, can prevent the Delta infection better than two doses of Sinovac, but still less than two doses of AstraZeneca, the doctor said."

I think this doctor is confirming what most laymen would assume to be the case. Good to have it “confirmed”, although it must have been short term research.

Amazing news and we know they will give it to the people who need it most, with no detours to Phuket or anyone else who is not on the vulnerable list

I do understand your post Brian, and I would expect it go to the vulnerable all over Thailand, irrespective of what happened previously

I believe they're simply taking blood tests from inhouse medical staff who've already received two doses of Sinovac and then other comparisons. And then tracking those immunity levels over time post vaccination.

1,439 market workers vaccinated to protect against the Covid-19 virus in Pattaya

1,439 market workers vaccinated to protect against the Covid-19 virus in #Pattaya, but the overall allocations of vaccines to Pattaya remains low as the majority continue to go to Bangkok, the center of the current outbreak in Thailand.

Yup, and it must have been for at least a week 5555. Although no time period is mentioned, so for all anyone knows, it was a one off check.

None of the recent pronouncements from Thai researchers ever give a time frame, scope or scale. Just a simple statement of this or that.

People living in Greater Bangkok and 4 provinces in the Deep South (Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala & Songkhla) can register for Sinopharm vaccine on Sunday at 8am on the Chulabhorn Royal Academy website (http://sinopharm.cra.ac.th) or their soon to be released app Cra Sinop. Good luck!

I suppose their defence will be that "it was a misunderstanding".

Should do it, plenty of precedents.

CONCLUSIONS
Our results suggest that the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectively prevented Covid-19, including severe disease and death, a finding that is consistent with results of phase 2 trials of the vaccine. (Funded by Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo and others.)

Covid related deaths 3032/372,215 infected = 0.81458297%.

If one calculated the above percentage into the population of 67 million there would be 54,577 deaths, about 10,000 more than the 2018 Influenza and Pneumonia figures back then.

Am I missing something here ?

For those who reside in Chonburi Province and those that have been there during the months of June/July:

Still awaiting list 3

The Chonburi Public Health Office last night (July 14th) has released a timeline to inform people who went to specific places last month and this month to notify health authorities and monitor their health. The following is an English translation of the release.

Editors note: Because the list is so long today we have divided this into separate articles. This is for Pattaya, Nongprue, Naklua. Other areas will be in a separate timeline. Central Festival Mall in Pattaya has closed today, July 15th, for deep cleaning, but plans to reopen tomorrow, July 16th.

List 1 of 3 here:https://thepattayanews.com/2021/07/15/timeline-pattaya-informs-residents-who-visited-places-in-relation-to-most-recent-covid-19-confirmed-cases-many-mall-cases/

Translation:

Residents are asked to make an effort to co-ordinate with each other and don't walk up and down the corridors when other occupants are out of their rooms.

A more literal translation from Thai:

"Request building residents to mind your spacing while travelling up and down with other residents. "

No mention of where so it likely refers to lifts, stairs, and corridors. All travels.

THG confirms deal for 20m BioNTech doses, 1st batch expected this month

Thonburi Healthcare Group (THG) chairman Boon Vanasin on Thursday confirmed that THG will sign a deal with Germany BioNTech to import 20 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Thailand

THG confirms deal for 20m BioNTech doses, 1st batch expected this month

The move came after Reuters reported on Thursday that both BioNTech and Pfizer denied they were in talks with THG.

"We are not in negotiations with the company," BioNTech said in an e-mail responding to a Reuters query about the deal. It also denied it was in negotiations with any Thai entity.
