China’s CoronaVac was 66% effective in preventing Covid among fully vaccinated adults, compared with 93% or the jab made by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech SE. The research shows both shots protect against severe disease. Sinovac’s inactivated inoculation, given to more than 10 million Chileans, was slightly less effective in preventing hospitalization and deaths than Pfizer’s messenger RNA vaccine, which was administered to fewer than half a million people, according to the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The Thai government should have known a long time ago that the mRNA vaccines would be superior. It was complete insanity to ever put faith (and money) in the Chinese vaccines. To be fair, initially all the eggs were in the local AZ basket. Also insanity, or at least high risk in terms of sufficient supply. Then it was the Chinese vaccine insanity. In the early days surely vaccine supplies should have been spread, then focus on the best performers? They were all so new 12 months ago. anyway, given that there is adequate financial and intellectual capacity in the world to pursue multiple vaccine paths, clearly there is an advantage to doing that. Having only one vaccine and then along comes a strain that it is ineffective against, wouldn’t be so great. At least with multiple vaccines, some might still be effective, as is the case currently with delta 2

The latest I saw in the week was one such researcher claiming re the Delta virus variant that two doses of Sinovac followed by a booster of AZ (the government's current plan for most medical workers) would confer much greater protective immunity than two Sinovac doses alone. But the same report by the same researcher said the Sino/AZ regimen would still provide less protection than two regular AZ doses. https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thai-study-finds-2-doses-of-sinovac-cant-beat-delta-variant-astrazeneca-can/ "The study reveals that two doses of Sinovac, plus a booster dose of AstraZeneca, can prevent the Delta infection better than two doses of Sinovac, but still less than two doses of AstraZeneca, the doctor said." It's not ideal, but it's the best we've got on such issues for the time being. I do think, though, it's probably their way of trying to respond to a government that's been claiming for months that Sinovac doses were very effective and adequate for protecting the country's medical workers (not to mention everyone else!). Even though evidence from outside Thailand's supporting the local doctors' contrary stance been pointing in the same direction. 2
