The authorities in Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand have significantly ramped up measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Effective today (Tuesday) restaurants can only open until 11 pm and cannot serve alcohol.

Alcohol can only be purchased in the city from 11 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm said the order, as reported by Channel 7.

Malls, shopping centers and community centers are allowed to open according to their normal hours but must have only one person per four square meters of floor space. Games and play areas are shut.

Gyms and fitness centers can open only to 9pm and must follow the patron per space limit rule.

All pubs, bars, karaoke, massage, baths, soapy massage, snooker, billiards and games and internet games shops are also ordered temporarily closed.

The media also said that 90 young people were arrested in the Sansai area for illegal congregation at several reservoir areas on Sunday.

A raid was also mounted on a Moon Muang, Phra Singh area establishment called Renegade Cafe where 36 patrons were arrested, as reported elsewhere on ASEAN Now.

Not in Chiang Mai - alcohol has been allowed in restaurants until 9p.m. for about 4-6 weeks, the same time Chiang Mai had a yellow COVID zoning. Monday was now officially last drinks.

yes ...That was my understanding...?

That’s what I thought as well, apart from Phuket because of the Sandbox. As usual, no one know <deleted> is going on, least of all the authorities.

Been on an off - we were at takeaway in April, then restaurants came back no alcohol in May, then June alcohol came back and now back in reverse ????

Chiang Mai is one of those places where covid has been spreading quietly and will soon see a massive increase in cases because of it.

I thought the recommendation was closing from 9pm to 4am for everyone?

By spreading quietly do you mean because of lack of testing it's gone unnoticed?

Pretty much, yes.

The morality police are back out in force destroying small business in the name of Covid.

Drinking alcohol during Covid is not allowed. Can somebody tell me what is the medical reason behind this? On the other driving under influence can continue as usual? By the way I even don't drink.  The only reason why Thailand is dealing with high covid cases is because the government did not do their job. They had plenty of time to get everybody injected. Most rules are just put in places by control freaks.

It's because most Thai people who drink alcohol usually drink in groups. When they are drunk, they will not respect social distancing or any rules such as wearing masks.
