Pattaya, Chonburi – A driver has been pronounced dead at the scene after he crashed his sedan into a power pole, causing the vehicle to break in half in Pattaya earlier this week.

The Pattaya City Police was notified of the accident in the morning on Sunday, July 25th, 2021, on Sukhumvit Road near an intersection close to the Boon Kanjanaram Temple in Nongprue.

Emergency responders and The Pattaya News arrived at the scene to find a vehicle that had been split in half and partially stuck around a power pole on the side of the road.

The Thais do seem to be past masters at making their vehicles perform undreamed of contortions and acrobatics. I remember being in the Siam Society building on Asoke many years ago when there was an enormously loud crash outside. Naturally, being voyeurs almost to a man (and woman), there was a rush outside to see the spectacle. Someone had managed to land their car on its roof on the sidewalk immediately outside - independently it seemed, for there was no other stationary, damaged vehicle in sight.

Not worth many words. Read the full article with the witness' statement.

Light rain... slick road... "gunning the engine".

As a non native speaker:

I looked up this term and it could mean revving up the engine with no gear (neutral)?

Then let the clutch jump?

Looks like he was a race driver in his second job.

I would recommend they preserve the scene and block it off leaving it visible.

Put a sign out explaining this is what can happen due to speed/reckless driving.

Might make a few people think about it.

Very sad RIP

Unfortunately driving a 30+ years old car with various upgrades etc did not help.

The old cars had little design with regards safety etc.

Cars can wrap around poles. But break in half?

I'd say that was two separate cars before the dead guy purchased it.

article doesn't mention if the driver was wearing his amulet, but surely he had the safety charms smeared all over his headlining..... it was probably a covid - related death...
