Thailand reports record high 18,901 new COVID-19 cases

Thailand on Tuesday (August 3) reported 18,901 new COVID-19 cases and 147 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.


● 18,158 new infections


● 743 prison / prison infections

Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 652,185 with 5,315 deaths. 

(Total infections since April 1: 623,322)

 

The news comes as the Ministry of Public Health is urging the general public to increase compliance with lockdown measures by another five percent, so as to keep the number of new COVID-19 cases and fatalities from rising further, as a recent study shows only 20 percent compliance. The ministry also encourages people to stay home to stem the spread of COVID-19.

 

Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit, said today that there is a big difference in the infection and fatality numbers when the lockdown’s effectiveness is increased from 20 to 25 percent.

New high for community infections of 18,158, also a new high of 18,590 of releasing from care, freeing up some much needed space for all the new patients that have been waiting for days to get a bed.

If they want to see an actual effect of the "lockdown", they obviously need to enforce the rules, not merely impose them. I see no evidence of that happening.

I'd love to see the maths they used to work that out - 20% 25% 5% and of course the 80% that is not effective - sounds like a load of nonsense to me

If this were a trend, yes. But to have 18,000 people released yesterday when protocol requires 2 weeks isolation and the numbers two weeks was much less than 18,000 indicates that this is simply a random bunching of discharges.

 

or the 18,000 released from care number could be wrong, I have seen 13,000 elsewhere.

if you compare thailand with india, adjusting for population.  the current numbers are approaching what india had at their peak.  20,000 cases in thailand, times 20 for population adjustment, is 400,000 for india.  and deaths is similar, 200 for thailand (roughly) is 4,000/day for india (their peak).  the total cases and deaths in thailand are still way behind but i think almost halfway so MAYBE close to a peak and experience the same amount of cases/deaths that we've had so far on the way up as we go back down.  we'll see what happens but that is how it stacks up to india right now and of course all is based on reported numbers which never capture the true numbers.

I think this wk will see a first. >100,000 new infections and possibly 1000 deaths in a single week. If things continue as they are it will take the all up total past 1,000,000 infections and close to or exceeding 10,000 deaths by the end of the month.

We'll see how it is over the next week or so although logically a lot can also be attributed to the new home isolation policy where a large proportion of "green patients" are now instead of field hospitals.

Directed to those who are actually 'tourists' as apposed to those who are joining family.  For them I doubt the restrictions will make any difference.

Its that complacency mode again, words are no substitute for actions, its what lead them into this crisis and its whats hindering them from getting out of it.

The Thais still don't seem to be getting the joke about COVID, at least in Chonburi. 

 

Markets still open, people mingling around each other, little or no control of movement in and out the province. 

 

Masks and gels will only go so far. They need to understand to stay away from other people. Period. 

 

I barked at a guy for breathing down my neck in the 7/11 yesterday. Why can't they STAY AWAY from other people!?! Especially strangers! 

 

Current measures do not seem to be effective so either tighten up or rethink the strategy as we are at a tipping point into total chaos at the moment.

Simply not true... UK numbers are far below their highest for this wave. They were falling after schools closed, but now show a slight recent rise probably due to the end of restrictions, Italy and USA are rising  but not at any 'highest'.

Exactly what I was thinking. A jump of 4.5k in one day has to be down to something else. 1 wk ago discharges were 9,168 so >100% jump in a week.

tomorrow I have to go to a crowded Bank then likely a crowded immigration to renew my 12 month extension, how many rules is that breaking - I am seriously quite annoyed at having to do this - I have been self isolating in my condo for near enough 3 weeks now and tomorrow it all goes down the ##### because I am being forced into a situation I do not want to be in

I wonder how many were "on holiday" or just using the sandbox as a jump-off for returning for family, for business etc - not tourists per-se. Guess we will never know.

But for them returnees it still beats ASQ BKK.

The feedback I got from someone recently renewing their extension was it was not crowded in immigration and the Extension was done quickly.
