Hope that's true but they seem intent on sterilizing the beach and making it enjoyable for no one.

No shade, what a shame.   The old trees that was there before giving good shade was really nice but no, they didn't want them as well.   How odd they are now spending many millions

Don't need it. Just payoff money to Nong Nooch for shutting them down 18 months. Saw gigantic truck with 4 immense roots being hauled away. Tree karma will get these bastds. This mafia mayor should go

  • This is meant to be a 2 year project....   Has anyone noticed what they put their FULL UNDIVIDED attention on, on the very FIRST day of this project? Drum-roll please........................

I play Golf at a course in Sattahip and they destroyed large areas of trees and plants, not one tree was left, they don't know their worth, the Navy just got chain saw happy

Horrible sights Sunday and today as all the old shade trees are being ripped out by the roots and destroyed.  Makes me sick.

Have some faith.  The Thai's know what's best for Thailand.  ????

yes a bit like south Pattaya road and outside Tucom - must be 3 years in the making and still not finished the pavements !

A few artists' impressions of questionable accuracy probably ain't worth an orgy of the usual knickers soiling. We do enjoy pot stirring quite a lot, however.

We've seen the "drawings effect" before. In general, we should try to avoid another outbreak of the dreaded incurable Tic-Related Promenade OCD (TRPOCD). After that 40-page muthah of all doomster threads Widening Of Beach Rd Started At North End, many of our posters were left decimated that their Death prophecies failed to come true and more tourists than ever were using the Promenade. Well, except for now, what with COVID.????

TRPOCD seems to be have been contained, finally, except in one of our posters, compelled to write the occasional Tic now and then.

Happily, that Ultimate Doom thread did serve as the usual reliable inverse indicator. The DESTRUCTION of Dead Pattaya had been chanted, confirmed, echoed, celebrated, and blessed for an entire year. So, about three months later, Holiday Inn started accepting bookings for its new Executive Tower. The following year, 8.1 million tourists ("overnight international visitors") stayed in Pattaya, representing a 10% growth from 2014, according to MasterCard’s Inaugural Asia Pacific Destinations Index.

Then the share price of Central Pattana rose sharply to an all-time closing high set on May 7 of 57.25: an increase of 39% off the low in one month!

But nowadays we got a new Death thread every week or so. This should be quite an economic revival when it comes. 'Course, there's hardly any place to go but up--from here, right?

WELL ANYWAY. . .

This ain't no big redevelopment of the Promenade, no "new Promenade" as our pot-stirrers are trying to portray it.

It's merely a few delayed upgrades we all so much enjoyed sneering at last year:

160 million baht Pattaya beach renovation to be started at the end of this year

The renovation will consist of repaired and renewed footpaths, more green zones, more parking areas and underground toilets.

Which, on its face, addresses some long-standing whinges voiced here. The lack of parking was decried as early as two decades ago.

We'll see how it goes, if it goes this time. As @champers wisely counseled at the end last time,

Patience is a virtue and Geena is a punk rocker!
     —champers, 2014-04-30 01:29:07

Yeah. Sheena, too.

Don't forget this will be "Pattaya Neo " , to rival Miami  !!!    err well that's the plan !!

Sir you are correct, this is exactly the plan.......They want to sterilize Bangkok ,Khao San road, Beach Road, Walking Street etc etc etc They want another Singapore...

Clean, life-less, soul-less is the goal.......And trees, art, nature, and beauty just get in the way....

Utterly the most stupid idea from Pattaya City Hall, to remove all the old growth broad leaf trees. The plan will make the beach like a desert, uninhabitable by humans. Just like in the plan photos, there will be six people on beach during daylight hours, instead of a 1,000 or more.

The beauty of Thailand is its natural beauty, not an artificial concrete jungle like Singapore. They need to plant 2,000 trees on Pattaya beach, not just palm trees, but big shade trees.

Before 2013 the promenade was the most fantastic, wonderful, fun, beautiful place......Evil, is the word that pops into head when I see the new drawings......You are correct if hundreds and hundreds of shade trees were planted and some plants with lots of seating, The beach could be great again....

O-Yea and take a chainsaw to most of those obnoxious bloody Palm trees........

Dedicated baht bus lanes for a start.

Don't see the point in that... they seem to drive and stop where they want and switch lanes with total disregard. Efforts to get them to change have never ever worked.

And this is especially for one member here and his "agreeers here that are in a major case of denial about this wholesale environmental destruction with ridiculous comments like: minor upgrades to this and that.

Total lack of priorities with homeless and starving people in the Pattaya area.

C'mon man.The type of tourist they want doesn't actually walk. They are driven in their limos. They don't need shade or seats.

Besides, the promenade will be too dangerous to walk on with all the hoons riding their m'bikes at high speed.

Yes they are driven around by their 5 * employees so as to prevent them from putting up with the chaos around here. So is that going to the mall and back? Don't visitors like to have an evening walk along the waterfront for relaxing shopping and dining? No can do. What with all these projects that are destroying what was once unique to pattaya in name of "family friendly". Not only are they putting many locals out of work. They just might be halting the wealthiest visitors too. And in my book getting what "they deserve"

Exactly......People seem to have a real problem making the connection that a thriving beautiful beach feeds the hotels, bars, restaurants etc.....

A beautiful beach/promenade not only attracts tourist, it puts people in a party mood to spend money.......And a dead soul-less beach with endless rows of generic boring Palm trees does exactly the opposite....It brings people down......Pattaya better wake up........

For the 166,000,000 million baht budget they have to spend,we should be seeing a new beach that will leave everyone stunned with its beauty......But I certainly am not going to be holding my breath......

Just an environment for quality tourists!!!

And they don't sit on a beach promenade if there is no adequate offer of food and drinks.
Especially not toilets ????

THAT do only cheap tourists!

I reckon all the soi dogs will be happy with all the palm trees to pxxs on.

With no shadow to shelter, all dogs will be in front of 7/11 doors and all tourists in the mall trying to refresh themselves.

Agree, but they only see that Singapore is rich. Never mind that the culture is completely different.

In Pattaya it's always about the money, IMO.

It'll look good in the brochures though, and no doubt IMO the suck up to rich people publications will be lauding Pattaya as the next must visit location. How else are they going to fill all those big new hotels at the prices they will be charging?

Well it looks like out of 50 votes......A whopping 4 people really like the direction the Pattaya Promenade rebuild is going.........

But even if no people liked the project it would matter ZERO.....

A look at the Pattay Watchdog group shows the Thais are just as upset as the farangs...  https://www.facebook.com/PattayaWatchdog/      In the comments below post....

Trying to fix that beach is a never ending battle that can't be won due to the local geography and environment.  All it takes is a few days of heavy rain to reverse millions of baht of work on it so what to do?  I expect removing the natural protection, the trees is only going to make it worse and harder to retain the sand, and that can't be done with this area as has been proven over many years of attempts to reclaim it.  Best focus on another beach with better lineage and stop wasting money on this one.

I wonder if the openness and lack of shade is a cunning plan to make it less attractive for the homeless, druggies,  and rough street hookers who blight the south end .  i find from the Klang ntersection North to be more appealing in all respects, the pleasant relaxed feel of the environment just deteriorates in the other direction as you head to the ultimate eyesore/dump that is Walking St.

I suppose in the end it probably won't matter what is planned as the end product will likely be poor in execution, sub-standard quality, last a couple of years before being ripped up again only to benefit those involved in the contractual process. Sad, so much more could be achieved with the hundreds of millions spent annually if the public interest was the motivating factor.

I chose "don't care one way or another" because however it turns out it will change again in 5 years or so. Plus, I sit on the beach rather than the prom which will likely be crammed with vendors and folk getting on or off the Koh Larn boats.

I was able to select all three..........wonder if all three counted?

I don't know if Thais believe in hell, but karma will get all involved in that act of vandalism.

Perhaps Pattaya will go to hell, or at least get washed away in a flood.

I'm not there now, but to read the posts, some think it's hell already.

Have you seen North on Beach Road, they are digging up the same beach for a km they did last year or 2x before. <deleted>! Get rid of this mayor.

They will never fix the dirty water, just build a bridge to Koh Larn and advertise it as the 'Phuket of the North'

Every couple of years we get a new vision produced for Pattaya beach, some nice computer generated images and an allocation of a squillion or two baht...and so here we are again.

Personally I liked the plan about a decade ago which was to make beach Rd/second Rd a one way system and to have free of charge tourist buses doing the loop all day and night to make it easy for everyone to get around.

I guess the Baht bus mafia won that one.  We still got the one way roads though which has helped massively.

Long time expats can be forgiven for not getting enthused by yet another Pattaya beach revamp vision.

Don't know what everyone is going on about, looks fantastic with so much shade for everyone...

The beach area was pretty nice back in 2011 with large shade trees, meandering pathways, mounded planting beds for shrubbery and lots of seating. Charming and thoughtful landscape design.

Then, some greedy boneheads ordered the cut down of the nice old trees, bulldoze the pathways, rip out the seating, then replaced it all with concrete pavers and added another lane to the road for parking.

Anyone paying attention knew that City officials needed to flatten the area so they could hold “festivals” and rent vendor tents to a thousand vendors selling cheap <deleted> and snacks.

A real money maker for the bigwigs at City hall intent on exploiting every square centimeter of public property for personal gains.
