Thailand should expect to see a spike in Covid-19 cases as the country eases lockdown measures on Wednesday, a public health expert told Thai Enquirer. The important thing is that the public must “not panic,” the expert added.

 

The country’s hard-hit Covid-19 provinces, which has been under lockdown measures for over a month, will see a gradual easing starting on Wednesday including the reopening of malls and restaurants for dining-in.

 

Contrary to previous announcements, a government spokesman said that diners and staff do not have to be fully vaccinated to participate in the reopening.

Seems to me we are going to be saying, "here we go again". Finally numbers trending downward in a real way, and we open up malls and restaurants to the unvaccinated.  10% of the populace has had 2 injections. Everybody is bored and restless but now is certainly not the time to open up like this. But I do need a haircut.

Time for us to learn to deal with it as a risk. Vaccinated people significantly less risk than those who choose not to be. Life goes on

Hopefully many will take this advice to heart, and the situation can begin to normalize as the reopening begins and the vaccine rollout continues apace.

A spike is predictable, hopefully they've decided not to panic and maintain opening up

What about those who choose to be but cannot get one?

“What we cannot have is people or large sections of the population that hold out from getting vaccinations because of misinformation,” he said. “Any vaccine will work to mitigate the disease right now, in a year we will have better ones that prevent most symptoms completely.”

 

Plenty of good reasons other than disinformation for not wanting to be vaxxed right now.

 

Wishful thinking that there will be "better ones that prevent most symptoms completely" next year. Instead there will be endless boosters for those who have been vaxxed this year.

 

Either way, it should be your choice, not mandated.

Probably made in China 

We switched to an electric pet hair trimmer and it is way better than the human hair trimmer.

It indeed will be your choice.  But to participate in society so as not to be a risk to public health and safety you will be isolating yourself from the rest of us.  Your choice

why is there a desperate need to open restaurants over other things?

 

these places will spread it more than bars

 

larger groups, sharing of food plates, eating and talking with mouth open etc.

 

they should be opened for takeaways, nothing wrong with eating the same food just at home

Most Thais do exercise the necessary precautions to limit their exposure to be infected with restriction partially lifted. Mask, social distancing and the desire to be vaccinated can be expected of Thais. We don’t have much of the western values for individual freedom but rather a sense of communal well being.

The massaging of the figures means a backlog of infection results due to flood out. So warn the public of a "normal" spike to hide this flood so the earlier spin of lowering figures is kept. 

 

But who knows the truth. So much spin I think the powers now believe their own spin.

the unfortunate truth is that Thailand is acting like a country that has been fully vaccinated and that is a problem, they are at least 6 months behind the west but are trying to do things that the west are doing 

 

There is no reason to stop foreign fully vaccinated tourists coming here if they want to come but what is the point when the place is shut down, plus all the stupid conditions - Thailand needs to its own house in order - it really is that simple

I don't think that this message is necessarily intended to hide anything. He probably meant it exactly like it sounded like.

 

It's really logical to expect that a loosening of restrictions will lead to an uptick in cases. The expert in the article is just making the valid point that there's no need to overreact if case counts are higher post-reopening than they are now. Some people might find it a little scary at first, but ultimately, this is for the best.

I think slowly money gets more important than Covid. It is called the "new normal". Best might be to switch on the brain and decide for yourself how much risk you want to accept. I for myself avoid crowds and especially strangers without masks. Even being vaccinated the "new normal" doesn't prevent me from getting Covid. But the "old normal" prevented them from getting money. And also the 120 days grace period for Covid are over pretty soon. And yes - the main season is approaching. 

I think, as in the UK, people will try to keep themselves safe (masks etc) and mitigate the rise in infections even though controls are being lifted.

Actually, the more the vaccine refuseniks dig in their heels, the more opportunities the virus has to mutate, and, eventually, it can mutate to the point where it's resistant to any vaccine. Had these tin foil hat-wearing idiots been around in the 1950s, then developed countries like the U.S. would still be fighting polio today.

In 1976 the swine flu vaccine was halted after people developed disease and some died....were the researchers involved anti-vaxxers?

 

Polio was epidemic for decades before a vaccine was created.  Attempts to find a vaccine started a couple of decades before Salk finally developed his vaccine, which he began testing in 1952, and wasn't rolled out until 1955.  

 

Compare this to covid.  The vaccine was rolled out less than a year after covid was first identified, something which usually takes 5-10 years for adequate testing.

It can only be hoped. Perhaps as an incentive to do so would be reminders that while restrictions  are being removed those identified as positive cases will still have to enter compulsory quarantine ?

While it may be or not be a "carefully" calculated risk the reality is that the regime is being steadily pressured by social objections to the various issues where vaccine availability remains elusive on any massive scale to the satisfaction of public expectations while economic factors are also increasingly dragging at the heels of both the regime and a significant sector of that same general public and the internal national economy that previously sustained them.

The 2% dubiously touted as the unemployment level is likely to be those who previously were employed in income tax liable occupations as opposed the massive casual cash in hand jobs that by virtue of generated greater lucrative 7% VAT in consumer consumption for the Government's coffers.

This "Learn to live with  it" concession is being made in other places in the world too.

The accusation that people who are not vaccinated are a factory for new SARS-CoV-2 variants, is simply not true. There is more research emerging on this now that we have more data to study. According to leading scientists, your natural immune system generates immunity to multiple components of the virus. This will promote your protection against a vast range of viral variants and abrogates further spread to anyone else.

 

Although still under peer review (so I won't link to it) there has also been a recent publication by Japanese researchers showing that mRNA vaccines may actually enhance the infectivity of the Delta variant, making it completely resistant to the vaccine. This is why it is so important to have sufficiently long trial periods and adequate testing of vaccines before releasing them on the public.
