Baby boomers have long worked hard to provide for the wellbeing of their children and today those same children – and their own offspring – are working equally hard to treat their pets like kings and queens.

 

Thais love their pets and according to studies, more than one-third of households in the country own at least one animal. The love is there as it has always been, but the major change is the shifting trend from pet ownership to pet parenting. The trend is crucial in driving the industry as well as in changing consumer behavior. Pet parents want the best for their “kids”.

 

“Yes, I do work hard for my cats and dog. I have four cats and one dog and they stay with my mom upcountry. I work and send money to mom to care for them. The pet food alone costs a lot because they are fussy eaters and then there are medications and all that. Grooming is expensive too,” says Pat, a 30-something freelancer in Bangkok.

But many treat their animals not good ... I have seen many very cruel examples of dogs literally tortured to death here .

Most Thai love their family only , and themselves , of course . Animals are often treated as if they were just things that don't have feelings , but that is wrong . 

 

Yes some thais take care of their pet but they are in a tiny minority

 

Most thais should never be let near an animal

Taking care of your "prize pet "is chucking rice on the ground to the mangy untrained  dog which is let free to roam anywhere

 

Yes indeed , It warms your heart

I guess that includes all those cats and dogs who are often treated like s@$#. How many of those so called pets have ever visited a vet? It seems many of those animals die young because nobody really cares.

 

And then there are those people who buy all the useless and expensive things in the so called pet shops. Food with strawberry taste or maybe some clothes? Stupid!

 

 

Before people have pets they should read at least one book about whatever animal they think about buying. What do they naturally eat? How much attention do they need? Should they be in groups of animals, etc. The information is available but unfortunately too few people care.

There is cruelty of almost all animals here, however, Thais with mostly small dogs spend an enormous amount of money on them.

Weekly grooming, foods, clothing, even freakin' dog nappies!

One of our family members have a dog/cat motel in BKK and Korat...Thb 500+/night...and always full.....vet service is very expensive.....

Here I go off topic musing again. The dry food I bought for my cat, apparently it was very important it be shaped like little fish.....

I have 4 dogs 3 being rescues. Vet service is very cheap compared to western countries.

I did not use the services back home, but cheap is not what I found here, unless I used an older more basic clinic, rather than the glitzy modern ones. I also felt it was about making as much money out of me as possible...... much like my visits to a hospital.

That depends. Have a look at Thonglor pet hospital. It sees for some owners it's some kind of a status symbol to go there with their pets.

Chula small animal hospital, in the middle of Bangkok, has reasonable prices.

I have owned many dogs in the UK and I can tell you the expense for vet services is astronomical compared to here. I use the vet services attached to the University

If they want to spend more money just for status then let it be. I use a veterinary hospital attached to the University where I live.

Well I live in Pattaya, but thanks.

How have you found the services in general?.... Too many times I felt I had wasted money with what was either a non diagnosis, or one that seemed unlikely. They also shied away from telling me in an instance it was a terminal situation....

I have 4 rescues here my Friend has 1 dog in uk

What I pay for a year for 4 dogs would not cover one i jection in uk

Pet insurance has bumped up prices there unrealistically

Most Thais are nasty and cruel to animals.

The great Buddhists they are.

I agree 100% most Thais seem almost to enjoy being cruel ofcourse there are exceptions but few and far between........bit like finding a real Buddhist here

I am not really in a position to comment on that. I was there only a few times mostly for check-ups. The service seems to depend a lot on the individual doctors and on the problem. Some problems are a lot easier to diagnose than others.

Most dog owners lack sense and sensitivity.  Spending such obscene amounts of money on a muck-making, disease-spreading, accident-causing machine is proof.  Meanwhile humans by the million die of malnutrition.

We have a hard time traveling because of our dogs.  There are not many people here I trust them with.

I did not reliase dogs were responsible for the millions dying of malnutrition. I think you will find that its other humans.  So on your thinking we should wipe out the entire animal kingdom or are you just dog hater.

I thought taking care of your animals well meant walking them, playing with them, feeding them, keeping them in your yard and generally being nice to them, to be honest I have rarely seen it in Thailand, most people just let their animals live on the streets and mooch food from others, beat the hell out of them, never walk or play with them and of course never pick up all the poo they do over the streets or rubbish they rip into. Good animal care is something sorely missing in Thailand, 2 of our dogs were dumped, one was only a new born, responsibily/acting humane just doesnt exist with many

This person like many Thais have no idea about taking care of pets, especially dogs. the pets do not know where the money comes from to buy them food. they need love, caring and to be part of a pack. This above just shows the mentality. Does this person think that when she goes home the dog thinks hey, here is the person who works hard for me. Mentally inefficient.

It seems that is exactly the attitude which many Thais have to their human kids.

Seems a bit pointless, I thought the whole reason for pets were to have them with you.

Mine are never far away.

One of my rabbits died unexpectedly in the night, only 7 months old and healthy the day before.

In a blind panic I took one of the others to the vet for a check-up, thinking disease killing all.

Vet had a look at everything, checked poop, temp, eyes, ears, fur ...... said everything was fine.

15-20 minutes, cost 50bht.

Generally their Animal Husbandry is as poor as their Parenting.....nuff said !

I have a large Mackerel Tabby , It is his house and he has taken over , don't know where he came from about 3 years ago , just turned up. Catches about 6 rats a week.

Loved my dog a great companion even on the worst of days...
