Thailand detects first case of Omicron variant

Thailand has detected its case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, health officials said on Monday.

 

The case was discovered in a male US citizen who had travelled to Thailand from Spain at the end November.

 

The case is still awaiting the result of a second RT-PCR test, Dr Supakit Sirilak, chief of Thailand’s Medical Science Department told press on Monday.

 

Dr Supakit urged the public not to panic in relation to the discovery of the Omicron variant in a person in Thailand.

 

This is a developing news story. This post may be updated without warning.

That's not been proven.  Far from it.

It's now been reported in about 50 countries.  Guaranteed it's all over by now.  It moved quickly.

From my understanding this variant was announced only recently in  RSA.

The poor chap arrived in November, I  supposed he had been tested and quarantined as well upon arrival in Thailand. 

I therefore can only suspect he has been infected in Thailand only. Maybe I am wrong.????

He's not a doctor, he's a retired nursing teacher.  His videos are good, but he is not saying this pandemic is going to end.  Don't post misinformation.  It helps no one.

AFAIK, only one CEO of a private healthcare network, has put forward this hypothesis (twice). So far, only one other person, an immunologist, is publicly sharing his 'cautious optimism'.

He is American who traveled to Thailand from Spain, where he had been living for the past year.

 

From my limited understanding of virology, I believe viruses do not discriminate based on a potential host's nationality.

Correct. SARS-CoV-2 doesn't need a passport to travel either.

 

Maybe by the next 'variant of concern', the world health authorities and the knee-jerk governments implementing big pharma's vaccination Ponzi schemes will realize that even with the most intense genomic sequencing efforts, the earliest that a new variant can be confirmed is upwards of two weeks after the fact.

 

The stigma of naming it after a country or a region still persists despite the fancy-looking Greek alphabet.

Less need for oxygen with shorter  stays in hospital. 

No spike in deaths seen even as cases increase. 

Still  early doors to read too much for Omicron but early signs look promising and a good read for those interested in the early data.

what part of "may well mean" don't you understand? Anyway, what's wrong with hope and optimism? The pandemic will end one day and for the past year and a half professionals have been saying the way it will end is the virus will eventually mutate to a weak strain no worse than the common cold and it will be over. That appears to be happening right now. I repeat "appears to be" FYI, statements such as "may well be" and "appears to be" are opinions not misinformation. Have a nice day you grumpy old pessimist.

Hope and optimism is what I heard back in January of 2020.  Look where we are now.  Most experts are saying this is serious and none are saying it may well mean an end.  None.  I'd rather think things will be bad and they turn out better, than have sunshine blown up my bum only to find out things are bad.  Get it?

“Thus far, the signals are a bit encouraging. But we have really got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is less severe, or it really doesn’t cause any severe illness, comparable to Delta.

I read in pattayaone this morning that CCSA said the migth be a new lockdown if this virus is deceted in thailand.If so im happy i didnt book my fligth before march next year.

I wouldn't say far from it. There have been studies showing a virus with many mutations tend to kill itself off or weaken considerable.
