I told her about the three wise men and the virgin, and she didn't understand what I was talking about.

Just tell her it is a time for giving and receiving. You might just get lucky ????

If you don't know what Christmas is about, it is difficult to explain to somebody else...and 3 wise men and a virgin even I would not know what it could be...

I suspect only the virgin is wise ????

You are asking how to explain how one woman's lie got out of hand?

Don't bother.

Tell her the truth... it is a fairy tale, nothing to worry about, no presents needed, Buddha does not care about Christmas

  • Popular Post

Just get her to watch Monty Python's "Life of Brian".

The Thais certainly understand Santa Claus and Christmas trees and gifts and Jingle Bells ("jinga bel").

If you really need to explain the theological backstory, there is a version of Monty Python's Life of Brian available with Thai subtitles.

I'd pay good money for somebody to translate the Thai subtitles back into English.  It might even be funnier than the original movie.

They usually are.

I remember watching the Keenan Ivory Wayans film White Chicks with my wife. During one of the tasteless fart scenes, the Thai translation of the dialogue was "buffalo died around here."

Maybe not a fairy tale but just a huge misunderstanding or interpretation as to what really happened.

Do like i did, gave her a bunch of 1000 bahts notes said Merry Christmas and didn't had to explain anything...

  • Popular Post

Don't try.  Just buy her a couple of  nice presents every 25th Dec, cook her breakfast in bed and a nice traditional  dinner, drink lots' of whiskey and let her solve the mystery on her own.  It worked for me yesterday and for the 5 Christmases before this one.

Edit: forgot to add, do not mention Jesus, (whoever he may have been) carols, Christians, Wise Men, Bethlehem, otherwise you will sound like just one more deluded, religious lunatic.

Why try ?  Play ignorant and save lots of money.

Life of Brian does NOT say Jesus was a myth ( it actually shows him preaching and treats him seriously and with respect ) nor does it dispute that he was born in a manger with wise men etc gathered around. Many make the mistake of claiming that L O B mocks Jesus, which could not be further from the truth

If the OP is serious, it's not about Santa, presents, getting drunk after eating too much, or trees. The equivalent to Buddhism would be that Jesus had a message about how to live to enter Nirvana.

Why would he when he lived over 500 years before Jesus?

Should have told her about the 70 year old guy and his 14 year old virgin bride.

Then when the old guy is asleep an 'angel' sneaks in and impregnates his virgin wife.

Many Thai women could relate to that story!

Nothing in the Bible that relates to what you wrote.

Who is the 70 year old guy, and who is his virgin bride?

Can't be Joseph and Mary as she was already pregnant before they got married- the Bible is pretty clear about that.

Life of Brian was indeed not an anti-Jesus film (as many religious groups thought, who tried to ban the film). It was certainly an anti-Roman film, as suggested by the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea, and of course Biggus Dickus. It tried to capture the messianic fervor of the masses searching for some meaning in this life. And of course it was, in the end, an optimistic film that tried to always look on the bright side of life.

Good luck getting the real story 600 years after the event. I'm pretty sure Jesus wasn't around in the 6th century, at least in physical form.

Pretty good going at 90 traveling all the way to Egypt and back, probably on foot.

Anyway, whatever his age Mary was pregnant when they got married, and that makes her "not a virgin" in my book.

I was tempted to to say that it's just another excuse for a party, but I didn't to. She'd already got that message!

Hardly surprising that she couldn't understand what you told her!   Maybe you should get someone to explain to you what Christmas was about originally, it has never been about "three wise men and a virgin" [sic].  It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.  Just the same as Buddhists commemorating Buddha's birthday/life, Visakha Puja.

Poor Joseph gets a bad rap. If not for him marrying Mary she'd probably have been stoned for having sex outside of marriage, and the entire Jesus story would never have happend.

As it is, other than the mention at the start, he seems to vanish from the Bible once they return from Egypt. Does Jesus call him father etc. I guess he dies before Jesus becomes a preacher, as never mentioned again. Even Jesus's mother just gets a last sentence or two before he dies.

What was "anti religious" about my comment?

Sorry but it is, or it should be.  Its actually just a pagan festival, passed down through the ages, and then highjacked by Christians. The rest is myth and historical fantasy, dreamed up by story tellers for the entertainment of the ignorant masses.  Now we use TV to basically achieve the same thing.

Its simply a commercial time period of the year exploited by retail and the media  based on an historic religious story

In short a fiary tale exploited to extract money under the guise of a claimed religious event that no one can neither prove nor disprove.
