Major geopolitical challenges in 2022 ‘too big’ for Thailand to handle

As host of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits and Myanmar crisis resolution, Thailand faces major challenges of superpower rivalry and ASEAN centrality in 2022.

However, seasoned diplomats fear this Thai government is not up to the task.

Preparations indicate Thailand will focus on APEC process and protocol rather than substance, meaning this year’s summit will likely bring little progress in world economic arrangements, they say.

Hosting world leaders like US President Joe Biden, China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin at the APEC summit later this year will also be tough for Thailand, which has been obsessed by domestic affairs over the past few years, the diplomats reckon.

“I don’t expect Thailand to achieve anything during the APEC summit because the forum itself is looking for a new identity, which Thailand as chair cannot offer,” said veteran envoy Kobsak Chutikul, an adviser to the Thai Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

A very scathing article. Basically it demotes Thailand to the ingternational classroom for the dummies those with special needs.

I bet the honorable (small - h) PM will be choking on his morning cornflakes joke when he reads this.

Don't worry, guys.

Thaksin will be returning this year -- and then everything is going to be just swell for Thailand. Thaksin Tony Woodsome said so.

But do any of these big international conferences ever achieve anything?

Thailand could start by getting PTT to divest from Burma, but that would be kind of like trying to get Apple and Tesla out of China.

I never expect Thailand to 'achieve' anything worthwhile at any time.  Treading water now for Decades !

Just about sums up they way things are done here. From schools to government, it's all about appearance. Scratch the surface and there's nothing there.

I think the ThaiPBS is talking/writing way above any intent that will be entertained at the APEC summit and quite frankly I doubt that PJ Biden will even attend. VP Harris to the rescue. Her braying and cackle will be the hit of the summit.

Thailand is totally out of it's depth... no idea.

Just recall the body language of our Uncle Too when he met Theresa May, the former British PM .... With Trump it was even worse when he stood NEXT to the red carpet .....

Protocol does not mean action but no protocol is ........ welcome to Thailand!

anything. The Generals are out of their depth when it comes to matters needing intelligent thinking which is not encouraged in Thai schools.

I would say there are lots of things he can't do, apart from army barracks and parade ground duties. Military Academy education right?? :cheesy::cheesy:

Calling Thailand a third world Banana Republic is being kind.

Military Academy education again springs to mind. Both him and his generals should be in the army barracks or parade grounds, not living it up in parliament and ruining the country by  playing at being politicians.
