I realised that western society is ( probably ) doomed when I first heard that the idea of multi genders was being taken seriously.

The Roman Empire took hundreds of years to decay to the extent that the opposition could take Rome without so much as a battle. Bear in mind that things happen soooooo much faster in these times.

Ain't that the truth.  Look at China's military, then Russia's - then look at the Rainbow Coalition of Western Woke Military's..

Better use nukes cause the Western isn't going to win the next global war with boots on the ground.  The high-heels get stuck in the mud.  I feel sorry for those troops who are actually highly trained soldiers.  Now?  Those guys would be better off working as mercs.

You wouldn't be the first to think that troops treated with more respect are 'softer' when in fact they can become more highly motivated to fight for their country. Proven not to be correct in the past. You may think it's bad form that gays can be gay in the military. Others see it as a sign of strength and that the government has your back as long as you do your job.

This book was published in 1997 right?

I feel like I'm watching S01E01 of Game of Thrones, "Winter is coming". I watched the whole series, did winter ever come? And if that was it at then end, it was easily dealt with by a teenager wielding a knife - spoiler alert.

Are we "there" yet"

Rewatch bru. As said, Ned Stark was meaning an actual winter, which in that universe could run for several years and would mean real hardship for the northerners. Ned also didn’t believe in the White Walkers… at first at least. Though D&D’s ending may have been somewhat controversial, it was fitting that Arya did the deed since she’d trained her whole life for that moment and was the most qualified. Still reckon it was well done.

Anyway, might be better off waiting for George to finish A Song of Ice and Fire if GoT end didn’t sit well with you.

That's not the issue. Used to be the military had a large pool of rough men to use as cannon fodder, but now society has degenerated IMO to the point that the average youth just couldn't cut it in the military.

Not a problem when only a small number of men are required for an all volunteer highly mechanised military, but will be a problem if things get so bad conscription is imposed, IMO.

BTW, when I was in the military I never ever felt that the government had my back. They certainly didn't give a <deleted> when I left as there were too many little tyrants to tolerate, despite having spent many thousands of $ to train me.

Treated us like <deleted> while in and not interested when we left.

IMO you will be waiting a long time. It's like skipping to the last page of the book and losing interest in the rest of the book.

I'm sure he's more interested in other aspects of the story. So far he's only told the story of a few of the kings. I hope he continues with more.

I enjoyed the books more than the tv series, but don't know if I would if he writes books that follow the tv series.

BTW, I hated the entire last series, but changed my mind when I watched it again on DVD. It isn't that bad after all. I think I was PO that Arya didn't get to gut Cersei, and that Cersei didn't suffer enough.

Also a lot of stuff didn't make sense, like if all the Dothraki died charging the army of the dead, how come so many were left at the big scene in the last episode? Also, if the wildlings were no longer enemies, why did they keep the Black Watch if no enemy to guard against?

I hope it is delayed a few more years to come, so I will be in my 70íes at least before hell brakes loose in about 20 years. Im old enough and will be ready to leave this planet by then.

From dust to dust, ashes to ashes

You're crazy to want to miss the excitement of what's coming.

When this comes (and it will) most people will be standing flat-footed on the beach watching the fish flop.

Since I'm limited to one reaction I'll have to award the second one for your excellent humourous visual of the unaware in a reply.

Will the government provide safe rooms on the battlefield, too?

In a sense you are making my case. It's not about mollycoddling you on the one hand, or ignoring you on the other, but just accepting and defending the basics of who you are and, in your case, looking to make you a better and stronger man and soldier.

You are linking being gay with some sort of modern affectation. I suppose there is a line between accepting people for who they are while not indulging individual preferences at the expense of running of the army as a whole. I think you can say 'Jack is gay. It's what he is. He's fighting for America and risking his life the same as you. Now get on with it'. Something like that.

I'd agree that it's true that gays are capable of fighting just as well as straights.  And yeah, there's no categorical link between safe rooms and gays.  My comment was meant to augment thaibeachlovers point that the west in increasingly feminizing the male population, which is directly opposed to the west's adversaries.  Call me biased but I'd prefer the military composition is primarily alpha males rather than feminized males.

Again, call me biased but I have a very hard time accepting this.  The military is not to be coopted for highlighting and flaunting sexual preferences and pride movements.

Perhaps the military has changed, but the one I was in didn't care about who I was, and while they trained me to do the job, they certainly didn't do anything to make me a  better and stronger man. I don't think they even employed psychologists back then ( though I don't know if they do now ).
