BANGKOK (NNT) - Officials will meet this week to discuss the longstanding issue of exorbitant government lottery tickets.

Seksakol Atthawong, an assistant minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, said officials will form a subcommittee to collect information on the issue.

The working group is expected to generate concrete results within two months.

Seksakol, who is also the deputy chairperson of the committee tasked with resolving the issue, noted that this week’s meeting will discuss factors contributing to ticket prices exceeding the 80-baht-per-ticket limit.

He acknowledged that middlemen play a significant role in pushing ticket prices above the government-mandated price cap. Each ticket costs 70 baht and 40 satang at the Government Lottery Office.

However, intermediaries who purchase the tickets in bulk offer them to major distributors at a rate of 80 baht each, while minor retailers sell them for 100 to 120 baht per ticket.

According to the assistant minister, the issue can be resolved by supervising the vending process. He added that the 10,000 baht fine for vendors selling overpriced tickets is inadequate for deterring repeat offenses.

The mobile ticket vendors, the ones walking the streets are the poorest of the poor.    I always pay what they ask, sometimes a little more.  They don't make a lot of money.

  • Oh, no not another committee, that will have to be the umpteenth  since Prayut said he would fix it 7 years ago.

Because that's what they have to pay to get a ticket if they want to enter the lottery!

The corrupt buffoons were sorting that out 7 years ago. Guess those connected with the government connected scam have their money out of Thiland now so perhaps a crack down may happen. Well maybe ????

And how many previous "Governments/Agencies have promised to "fix this" since the lottery started?

Why do people pay more than 80Bht?

OK some people will pay more for a "special" number but why pay more for a standard strip?

All the ticket sellers I've met are very nice people.

I feel these lottery pricing posts impact the sellers in a negative way, please be nice to them.

Just ignore them if you don't agree with their pricing, don't be nasty. I see people being horrible to them at times.

What makes me smile is seeing Police in uniform buying these at inflated prices.

What makes them think that this time will be different?

Another fail by the government.

Not even a committee......only a subcommittee......very poor.

Whatever happened to mulling......is it no longer a thing?

form a subcommittee to collect information on the issue.

The working group is expected to generate concrete results within two months.

LoL.

That a committee needs 2 months for this? Ridiculous. Anyone can explain the reason for the overpriced tickets in 30 seconds.

So that unnecessary tax money is not wasted on senseless committees:

A little hint.

The reasons are the same as 7 years ago. There must be  definitely photocopies of reports from the last committee in the archives.

Silly question. 99% of sellers will not sell you a ticket for 80 baht, so if you want, then you pay the usual 100 baht. Whether it's right or wrong that's the deal, so up to you, pay or not pay.

And next on the Government agenda: controlling the sunbeds on Phuket's beaches!

why are people willing to pay more than the stated price? and then complain about it? no one forces them to pay a higher price.

lottery tickets in the uk are a pound, why would i pay more then that?

In these digital online days, why are they still using a system that predates the internet?

I think I've seen the trailer for this movie, at least 15 times over the past 10 years?

See also Bangkok traffic to be solved in 90 days.

And the upcoming, Committee to Investigate Air Quality in Thailand to be formed next week.

Because no room for scamming in an online system, used in so many other countries.

People should realise if they paid 100 baht for an online ticket, the prize fund would be much larger in spite of the lottery operator’s expenses.

All this will do, if anything, is it will drive the small sellers off the street and do nothing to the middlemen who do little and make the most profit.

Not this old topic doing the rounds again. Too said he was going to stamp it out but yet again failed miserably, as he has consistently.

Within a couple of weeks of his and the last pronouncement on overpricing, it was all back to the norm of over pricing.

They should make it so tickets can be bought online and in the traditional way. If the online are 80 baht it forces the middlemen to reduce their prices. To keep the sellers alive maybe limit the number of tickets that can be bought online to 3 or something like that (set by ID card number). This would also reduce the cases where people argue who owns the winning ticket.

OK my idea is not perfect, but at least it's something that would allow the current sellers to stay afloat and be fair for the customers.

Another one that we've all heard before

13 hours ago, it is what it is said:

UK lottery ticket is £2 Wed & Saturday draw . The Euro lottery ticket is £2.50 and Tues & Friday draws.

Tis about time the Thai lottery system was updated by going online and using machines installed in say 7-11s , designed for the lottery that enable you to either choose your numbers or go for a lucky dip . As of now you have to troll through lottery slips to find your preferred/ lucky numbers . The current lottery vendors could still sell the underground lottery tickets

lottery ticket machines is the best solutions. The vendors don't want to listen and fines are not working so the only solution is take it away from them....Start with a few in every province and see how quickly the price at the vendors will drop. They will surely be afraid of losing their money.

The payout is worse than most other lotteries, even without the grossly inflated ticket prices
