Thailand has ”all of March” to avoid new Covid restrictions

Thailand’s central government and public health agencies all over the country have to contain the latest Covid-19 by the end of the month if it wants to avoid further restrictions and a possible shutdown, a senior health advisor to the government told Thai Enquirer on Thursday.

 

The country is currently experiencing a new wave of Covid-19 sparked by the virulent Omicron variant of the disease. Numbers are back up to over 20,000 cases a day with around 40 fatalities per day.

 

The government has increased the ’danger level’ to four and has given autonomy to provincial health offices to make the best decisions for their remit but numbers have continued to trend upwards.

What happened to learning to live with Covid like the west and rest of the world is doing, well all except for the Asean countries.  Threats of lockdowns and more:

If done as threatened above this will just kill any attempt of a recovery especially with the war in the Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia.  Tourism is very fragile as it is.  Domestic tourism is also very weak.

Meanwhile, all European countries have lifted domestic restrictions and most do not impose tests to vaccinated travellers ....

I wonder if the issue it the quality of the initial vaccines. Booster are only at 30%. Who knows how much actual protection there is in Thailand.

I see Germany and France still require a 72-hour pre-flight test. Wanted to visit France with a US passport in May.

Glad I picked up a full dose of Moderna in the States 5 weeks ago as my booster....of course I could not have gotten that here in Thailand unless I paid for it.  Had the 2 AZ's last year at MedPark hospital.

I saw a figure of 95% of those with covid not needing any treatment. That must be the cases that are known. Add to that asymptomatic and mild cases that are not reported and you must get a figure in the very high 90s.

 

Whilst we should not let our guard down too much and keep vulnerable people safe, JFC if now isn't the time to get your booster and open up, when is?!!

 

"Zero covid" is going to finish this country off.

I mentioned "most" but as far as Germany is concerned new rules apply from today  as vaccinated (or recovered ) travellers, regardless of their country of origin, can now enter Germany without being subject to additional entry rules, such as pre-entry testing and quarantine requirements (if one is fully vaccinated) 

Also, no more tests will be required on departure. for travellers vaccinated within the meaning of European regulations, Proof of a complete vaccination schedule becomes sufficient to arrive in France, regardless of the country of origin

That being said, even if there had been restrictions in the above cited countries you could fly to Denmark and reach Germany and France from there

Hopefully, by May , that will still be the case

Does it mean an early warning of songkran cancellation?

i do wish songkran was cancelled now and give population proper timing to arrange that holiday. 
The last year cancellation was on 10.04, when large part of holidaymakers were already on the move and were forced to pay for PCR tests on entering their home provinces, some were hospitalised because of testing positive, some were quarantined or told to self- isolate at homes. Thats 10 days od festivities ruined for them and their families

I have had two vaccine shots and will not be rushing to get a booster. There is nothing that i see from this Omricon variant that concerns me.

Other more vunerable people may think differently than me but nobody can really know what long term effects there might be by injecting all these vaccines into your system over a short period of time

A lot of Thais have had Sinovac. This was not particularly effective against the previous variant and less so against Omicron. The Thais that had Sinovac really need a booster.

The way they talk, it's like lockdown is the default position and if we work very hard we will be allowed Freedom.

 

It's ridiculous. The only real cause for concern was that a lot of the early vaccines were Sinovac (thanks Anutin!) which appears to be less effective and protect for a shorter period of time so these people should get boosted with a proper vaccine and then we all learn to live with it like the rest of the civilized world.

 

All these announcements make me think they're laying the foundations for cancelling Songkran.

This is getting more and more stupid! Learn to live with it!!! No matter what we will ALL get it at some point. Just look at Europe.

 

In Ukraine nobody is concerned about Covid anymore. In Australia all attention is focused on floods. 

 

For God sake… we might all be blown up by Putin next month. Forget the stupid virus and get on with enjoying life!!!

It was 1650 Baht for the booster at MedPark..  not really a big deal.

That won’t achieve anything. Let’s all move on from curtailing our lives because of this cold, shall we? Most other countries are accepting it. Why is Thailand still getting bent out of shape? Of course, run by kids with an agenda.

I don't think they are even counting anymore. It seems the whole Tambon has Covid. A friend was given medication and told to stay at home for 10 days. So headlines from an "advisor" like this are either (i) out of touch with reality (ii) likely to derail the tourist recovery as no wants to risk arriving in a restricted country (ii) totally irrelevant as nothing will happen anyway (iv) All of the above.

I received my 2 shots of AZ at Medpark hospital, and I also got my Pfizer booster from Medpark 2 weeks ago for FREE.

While the daily infections are no surprise the 40+ daily deaths is worrying.

Indeed, the only question is why? Why are they doing this?

 

To keep numbers down, to save face, because China promised them a 'travel corridor' if they do so? That will backfire when covid continues to remain an issue for years because of their measures.

 

There's only one way out of this and that's for as many people to catch it and recover from it as quickly as possible.

When I see these figures I have to stop and ask myself how many of those people were already terminally ill, and if so did they die from another cause, but is declared as Covid because they tested positive?

Always been the case - well, nearly always!

 

I don't have the figures to hand, but most of the reports of the deaths seem to be of elderly people with underlying health problems, and would have been seriously vulnerable to even ordinary 'flu, e.g from figures 2010 - 2020:-

 

" Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year."
