Where exactly do you get your info from?  William Hurt was 71 and had terminal prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

Rly?

Still....RIP William Hurt. A great actor that will be missed.

I think we've entered the age of mortality at 60. That's scary enough, but if you haven't done all the stuff you wanted to do by then, they you had better have a good excuse.

I always thought that 66 was the age-at-which-you-couldn't-argue - as I took to be age that Hemingway had had enough. Then I discovered that Hem died aged 61. ????

Why scared? 1 out of 4 guys dies before 65. Retirement age has always been based one expecting a good percentage to die just around it, sadly enough.

Yah by age 60 one is likely to be attending more funerals and fewer weddings, but I don't agree that one's list of things they want to do ought to be all accomplished by then.   Although this is the age of increasing mortality rates, a 60-year old in good health can still expect to live another 30 years or so on average.  And this is a chapter where if one has applied their efforts and avoided too many pitfalls in their youth, they now enjoy more time, more money, broader life perspective gained from their experiences, relationships built (or exited if negative), maturity and self-knowledge.  One's 60s can be a wonderful chapter with many years yet before health and physical limitations become more than minor annoyances.   I think all of us have met people in their 80s and 90s who, through a combination of luck and good choices, are at the happiest points in their lives.

I am not scared of death. I am scared of dying slowly and painfully. So I have taken steps to ensure my exit is quick and painless.

The dead don't know that they are dead, so its all irrelevant really.  It comes to us all and when it comes, one hopes it will be quick and painless, after that, its just nothing at all, so absolutely nothing to be scared of.

Oh, so are you going to start quoting religious rubbish to me now, from the world of the made up?  I don't believe in mystical beings, reincarnation, goblins and elves, ghosts, poltergeist, smoking bushes or any of the other myriad of made up stuff.  If you do believe in this nonsense and it gives you some kind of comfort, then good on you. I will stick to what is real and known.

How do you distinguish that which is known but not real?

Cancer is a natural cause.

If it had been a drug overdose or shooting that would be an un natural cause.

70 is the new middle age.

Hmmmmm. I've always taken from birth to be the age of mortality.

Agreed .........

I was 63 before I'd done everything on my list.

Last thing on my list was bungee jumping, did that here, Phuket, inexpensive, over a lake, at 44 yrs old.  Can't think of anything else want to do.  Visit a couple places, but too lazy to just go the the airport and wait around for 3 ish hrs, let alone sit on a plane more than 2 hrs.  So must not be too important.

Traveled out, since worked for airlines, and made things easy, more importantly, cheap, or I probably would have never left continental USA.
