Find this elderly foreigner who stole a 150 baht bottle of rum from granny

A son went online to complain about thieves constantly targeting a grocer's he runs with his mum.

 

Wiranit, 50 and mum Thongdaeng, 67, run a store 24/7 in two shifts in Phosri Road, downtown Udon Thani.

 

Earlier in the week mum was in charge of the store that sells mostly alcohol and cigarettes.

 

But she was sleeping. The son was at home.

The mum was disturbed from her slumbers by the sound of a cabinet opening.

 

It was a farang (language used by Siam Rath in their story) who was bald and obese with a black shoulder bag.

He shoplifted a "baen" or half bottle of Saengsom worth about 150-160 baht.

CCTV confirmed he was riding a red and black ladies' motorcycle and was wearing a black helmet.

 

Wiranit said that people were always stealing from them, especially taking advantage of his mother's age when it was her turn in the shop.

He said that the thieves before were all Thais - now a farang was stealing from them. They never report theft to the police - they can't be bothered with the fuss.

 

Wiranit told the media he had a message for the foreigner: "You're a farang, living in Thailand. I won't report you but you shouldn't do this".

 

Mum Thongdaeng was more direct:

 

"Just come back and pay for the booze," she said.

There is no excusing theft, but the ’son’ also seems somewhat ‘xenophobic' in his actions to ignore theft from Thai’s and then going public when its a foreigner. 

 

 

It's awful that people will just rip off shops like this where people are struggling to make a living. 

 

Despicable foreigner, but also despicable Thai’s, despicable anyone who would do the same thing.

My local newsagent in U.K. changed hands. The incoming proprietor was previously an office worker, it was his wife who wanted to own a retail business. He told me stock was disappearing right, left and centre. He invested in CCTV and was horrified to learn that, in his own words; ‘Everyone steals from my shop; male, female, singles, couples, young and old’. Sad but many people seem to enjoy getting something for nothing and don’t care who it affects.

I am always disgusted when I read of foreigners stooping to such miserably low levels.

For the sake of 150 baht it creates publicity which reflects poorly on all of us.

I hope he is identified and can receive the shame he so richly deserves.

I agree, but also the Thais should not be stealing either.  I wonder if, perhaps, because of "Thainess" they think that maybe the Thais are forced to steal because of poverty but that a foreigner must be rich so has no excuse.

A lock on the cabinet , although very expensive , might be a help.

 

If people are always stealing stuff then move the ' expensive stuff ' behind the counter , as in my local mom and pop stores. God helps those who help themselves.

The shop is open 24 hours. The report states it sells mostly cigarettes and alcohol, and the old Mother was asleep when the farang came in.

There are times when the sale of alcohol is prohibited  ...before 11am, from 2-5pm. and after some time late evening. ,. though I doubt that stops them selling alcohol 24 hours a day

 

Is it really necessary for the shop to be open 24hours  a day?  Open shorter hours and let the Mother have a decent sleep.....................AND OBEY THE LAW!

Well, there are probably several ways it can be interpreted and a more objective way can be that this behaviour can be expected of Thais but not from foreigners, which basically has a positive twist towards foreigners. Anyway, sad to see and especially in these hard times where most people struggle to make ends meet ....

In France where  I live, we always open our bags in shops to show the cashier. I don’t mind, theft is huge, no skin off my nose. Went shopping with family in UK , opened my bag at cashier, she was quite baffled, didn’t  understand. My  sister  in law said we didn’t have to do that there. I suppose UK does have loads of cameras.

It doesn't reflect badly on me, I don't steal.

 

Thais are or should be quite capable of differentiating which are good and bad foreign customers as well which are are good and bad Thai customers.

 

A scumbag thief is just that regardless of nationality

 

At my local Mom and Pop shop when I was drinking, the owner was forever nudging me when foreigners came in to buy stuff and asking if I was friends of these people or if I knew them.

 

it's like me taking him around Manchester Chinatown and asking him if he knows random shopkeepers!
