I left ‘confused emoticons’ to posts I found completely flawed..... Some so outrageously stupid it was not worth getting dragged down to their level and entering debate.

The ‘negative’ emoticon has a place to highlight disagreement - we don’t all have to agree and if people are so thin-skinned they can’t handle a negative emoticon on an anonymous forum they perhaps have bigger issues to be dealing with.

Please think about what your own issue is if all you want to do is expressing disagreement or expressing you feel disturbed without explaining why. You really think your simple agreement / disagreement is of any value to anybody just as is ?

If debate would really not be appropriate (which is indeed the case for some posts), why not just remain silent ?

I could understand your argument if it were aimed at providing some help or clarification, but this seems not to be your intention. Just hiding behind a "I dont like" and not contributing anything further might be a questionable attitude.

yeah the blocking thing is childish, but there are weak people who can't argue a point so just leave a sad or confused emoticon

Then why not just refrain from doing anything but thinking for yourself how stupid certain people are. Just an emoticon does not contribute anything to anybody (exept yourself maybe)

Independent of any member, I think the sum of agreements/disagreements is interesting.

Let's say we discuss closing times and someone would post he like closing time up to 4am because now at 2am he is only drunk, but at 4am he would be totally wasted.

Probably until now I would have clicked on sad or confused. And I guess many others would have done the same. But maybe I am wrong and lots of people would have liked the idea to get totally wasted.

When we still had positive and negative emoji for posts then it was easy for all of us to see how a comment was received by many members.

Now we could look through every answer below that and we could count how many positive and how many negative answers or emoji there are. But who would want to do all that counting? Then reading this forum would be work and that is definitely not what I, and I guess many others, have in mind when we read and post here.

I agree... and generally I enter the debate with the purpose of discussion.

However...   it can often get to the point of arguing with an idiot and being dragged down to their level and beaten by experience....

So... as you wrote.... ‘please think about my own issue IF all I want to do is...’....   thats obviously not all I want to do, but sometimes people post outrageously stupid stuff which hardly worthy of a response other than a ‘dislike’....

-------

For example: There have been many recent anti-royal comments on threads recently (pertaining to the British Monarchy) - I’m neither a royalist or an anti-royalist, but I find the anti-royalist bitterness quite poisonous and their arguments fundamentally flawed - the arguments are obvious and voice by many people already - the only thing left is to ‘post my dislike’ of such comments not in support of the British Monarchy but to call-out that person for their bitterness.

The same can be said for many of the Vaccination debates - the cherry picking of facts and misrepresentation of information is exhausting, there are too many of the same or similar debates running at the same time or repeated - the disagreement and posting an negative emoticon is like saying “You’re wrong, but I really can’t be bothered arguing this again and again if you are going to post links to fox news or the daily mirror” !!!

How sad (no emoji) that Asean has gone 'woke' or whatever they call it.

Now you can only post positive replies or upvote the post.

No balance and no choice and cut out ANY opinion that does not support the poster.

Pathetic but unfortunately the world is going this way.  You can no longer take an opposing position, sad that the forum has taken this path.

I think removing the negative emojis is a good thing.

You seem to value the herd opinion before daring to post, other than risking being unpopular by sidiung with an unpopular post you believe in, judging by this explanation. Now, my post here in the past, could be replaced with a lazy and limited range of negative emojis, but at least with a comment, you now have the option of defending your point of view.

So feel free to correct me, I don't have to win every debate! ????

Its often interesting to see see how divisive a comment may be and how widely our opinions differ.

Its almost like running a poll on each individual comment.

Why are some (forum members) so offended by other peoples dislike of their comment ? Are we that thin skinned ???

This is where I get confused .

Which forum member is offended by the emoji ?

I've had posters calling me "woke" P.C" "sensitive" "weak" just for having an opinion about the subject .

Exactly - think some members have the mentality of a child....  They are unable to handle balanced debate....

Personally, I thought ‘giving a post a +1 or a -1’ (the way it was years ago) is better option, but if we like a post, why do we need to explain why we like it ?

So... if we dislike a post why do we need to explain why we dislike it ?

The dislike was removed because some people were unable to handle rejection or some such feeling after receiving the negative emoticon...

We don’t have to comment on every comment, but we can still express an opinion with a simple emoticon...  or better still... I like that or I don’t like that.

An abusive troll post has been removed.

Please be reminded that the Forum Rules still apply here in The Lounge, and personal attacks and posts of an obvious abusive nature are not acceptable.

No!

Just read my original post. It's not about having the most popular posts - at least not always.

Sure, sometimes I make a joke and I am happy when lots of people like it.

But sometimes it is really about getting an idea about different opinions. This thread is a good sample. When I started it, I didn't know if many people agree with me or not. Now I can see that my original post in this thread has 28 positive reactions. Wow, great, everybody loves it - or maybe not?

Reading the comments there are definitely lots of people who don't like sad and confused.

But I didn't count all the replies, because it would be a lot of detailed work. It's not my work, and I don't get paid for counting, so I won't do it.

I simple dislike-symbol with x counts would give a good overview about how many people like those additional icons and how many don't like it.

This is not about winning; it's about getting a good impression about what others think.

Well indeed, I can't remember when the comment button was added, but it's been absent for at least half the life of TV/AN.

Because this would help the OP and possibly bringing new aspects to the surface. And if providing help is not an all important aim for a forum then I really do not know anymore what to say.

Certainly the most important thing is not to give certain individuals a platform to boost their egos. This is not aimed at you if you dont feel it might be. You certainly post some sensible posts most of the time from what I remember.

Why would you bother not liking a comment.  I never do or have.

Just move on to the next post.

This is probably why the dislike was removed.

At times I felt like I was being stalked by members with their stupid reactions, confused was the most annoying, why not ask for more information or an explanation instead of a negative emoji.

I do miss the laugh reaction, I regularly read funny comments from members.

Lots of clever members here with funny replies, they always give me a lift after reading all the moaning and negativity.

The laugh emoji could be weaponized. And the ❤️ or ???????? Can work for a laugh reaction.

The negative emojis were annoying. Used by lazy trolls and people with no ability to debate with much intelligence

I agree regarding the laugh emoji, it's sad that some members have abused the privilege, I can get by without the laugh emoji.

Some of our members can be very funny, real comedians, I liked to add a laugh emoji here and there at times.

Yep and agree regarding your thoughts on the negative emoji's.

A forum has many different uses... although very useful and I have received helpful information from this forum in the past, it is not solely a ‘help desk’.

There are topics on this forum designed specifically for debate, some deliberately inflammatory in nature or with the use of key words - often the news articles chosen seem to be specifically chosen to spark discussion.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with people showing their disapproval of my opinion - they may not be intelligent enough to articulate a valid response and prefer to use a negative emoticon.

Or, they may be too busy but want to show they disapprove....

Or, they may be too sick of disagreeing with the same type of comment and feel they are repeating thesemvles...

Or, they may just dislike me and want to disapprove with anything I say because I’ve upset them in the past.

I think all of the above is perfectly acceptable on a forum designed for open discussion and debate.

There are areas of the forum which maybe considered ‘help desks’ but even then, when some ask for advice there are some unhelpful responses which need to be called out.

I never minded the negative emoticons... I don’t care for the positive likes either to be honest.

Some people just troll or have opinions so wildly unbalanced entering debate is pointless - I find the negative emoticon applicable in such cases, or just ignore them and the topic will die out. Or, call them out on their flawed mindset (IMO) if I can be bothered...  naturally, they will disagree with me and related with a negative emoticon, thats fine with me.

It was as a Plus 1 ( +1 ) or a negative 1 ( -1) and the tally added up...  I think it was the start of the ‘like count’ and started early on in the forum.

Confused emoji

How can posters promote the idea this helps, its very presence is confusing, the ability to guess the correct meaning from a varied list of possibilities would require some quite impressive skills
