Thailand to scrap all emergency provisions as it seeks to boost a very fragile economic recovery

General Supot Malaniyom of the National Security Council confirmed that a meeting on Friday chaired by Acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan will hear proposals to cancel the Emergency Decree.

Move to scrap the Emergency Decree and the last of the entry criteria for incoming travellers is coming at a time when the full extent of the economic damage caused by it is becoming apparent while, at the same time, Thai consumers, appear to be in a confident, upbeat mood with sales of private cars in August up by a whopping 61.72% on the year before.

Thailand is to cancel all requirements concerning the virus emergency from October 1st including those for incoming passengers as the kingdom gears up to abolish the Emergency Decree introduced at the end of March 2020. It comes with a growing realisation that lasting economic damage to the kingdom’s foreign tourism industry and the overall economy has resulted from the measure which will take at least another year just to see the country recover lost economic ground and at least another two years after that again before the kingdom has any chance of witnessing visitor numbers like that seen in 2019.  

 

Thailand has announced that it is scrapping the last requirements for passengers entering the country related to the COVID-19 virus as the government begins winding down the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) as part of a firm proposal to abolish the country’s Emergency Decree and all its structures.

Good thing I don't have to pay for some dumb covid test to enter Thailand anymore.  Fully unvaccinated here and enjoyed my time in Bangkok never wearing a mask.  Glad to see I inspired confidence in this decision.

Finally, 2 years and 6 months later. Now we, who resisted taking the vaccine cocktail, and patiently waited for the “old normal”, which is the only kind of normal, can think about a well deserved holiday just like the good old days.

Ah, the lightbulb moment has arrived. Up to me such provisions would never have been instituted anywhere, and we'd likely have been back to "normal" over a year ago.

Good news at last. In recent times, the Emergency Decree has not been about Covid-19 as many here know. Whilst most of the rest of the world has gotten on with life, Thailand has dragged it's heels in the supposed name of Covid. What will happen if there are protests and demonstrations? Will the Emergency Decree be resumed? Or is Prawit made of sterner stuff than Prayut?

Sadly not everywhere else. Some of us have governments that are loath to give it up, and had to be dragged into reality.

I believe China is still trying to "eliminate" it, which IMO is not possible. That horse bolted long ago.

Sadly I did give in, but at the time the government was making it just too hard to live without surrendering, but at least I waited till an alternative to the "newtech" pfizer was available, and I didn't take the "booster" soon as they gave in and cancelled the overly authoritarian dictat.

It will be interesting to see how many people, particulary Thais keep wearing masks.  My guess is many will.  I still see a fair share mostly on motorbikes, but also in cars wearing them.

Damn, so people who didnt get fully injected may have gotten covid and not even know it?  Looks like there was no need for them to get fully injected in that case.  Less symptoms than a cold doesn't seem too serious.

Good to see these terrible restrictions and forcing people to take a vaccination they don't want dropped. We have come a long way from last year when the correct response to the unvaccinated was to fire them from work, banish them from society and/or punch them in the face.

What I do find amazing is that science follows a countries economic situation. Who knew? Or has the follow the science mantra been abandoned?

Makes sense to me to use a mask if I'm on the back of a motorbike taxi.

the world has moved on from covid. 

 

it won't be long until someone comes along telling me how so many thai were wearing masks before covid and any number of other bs statements.

It sounds like a child wrote this. What type of foreigner comes to a country, not their own and flouts that they don't follow the rules that all of the locals follow with no complaint?

Those who continue to wear masks are under a misconception . Do they wear them for their personal protection or to stop themselves from passing on the virus ? Of course its for their personal protection which shows ignorance  as most of the time it is the cheap medical mask that is being worn and that gives zero virus protection . Even within a building /shop that stipulates the wearing of masks , you will find most masks are the cheap ones with gaps around the face cheeks and often worn under the nose or chin . As for wearing a mask on a motor bike , what is that all about ? and often no crash helmet makes the whole mask wearing thing a shambles .

Both..... also include 'as a consideration for the sentiments of others around, who wear masks.' I do not see that as a misconception. Rest of your post is nonsense.... 

I was wearing a mask on a motorcycle because you are sat behind smoke belching vehicles frequently and I have to breathe.

Why? If you've had it and had no symptoms then so what? You've also now got natural immunity which we had been told is far better than any jab.
