Keith Miles, 78, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was travelling in a white Toyota Yaris with his boyfriend Tawid Kanadee, 27, when the vehicle collided with a truck in the north-east of the country. Before this, CCTV footage shows driver Mr Kanadee had slowed down to turn right into a side road before they were shunted from behind by a silver Honda CRV. The collision then pushed Mr Miles and Mr Kanadee straight into the path of the oncoming black Isuzu pickup truck. The vehicle smashed into the small Toyota and Keith Miles – who was sitting in the front-left passenger seat which bore the brunt of the impact – had to be cut free from the wreckage shortly after the crash at around 4.30pm local time. He was pronounced dead at the scene in the Sawang Wirawong district. CCTV footage shows how driver Tawid Kanadee slowed down to turn right into a side road before they were shunted from behind by a silver Honda CRV. The collision then pushed the car straight into the path of the oncoming black Isuzu pickup truck Paramedics rushed Mr Kanadee to the hospital where he later died from the injuries sustained in the accident. Officers are now investigating the crash as shocked friends paid tribute to Mr Miles, who had worked as a school teacher in the north-east of the country after leaving England several years ago. Thong Supachai, a friend of the couple, said: ‘Keith was loved by everyone. He was so much fun and he was always happy and making people laugh. Popular Post Scouse123 Posted December 13, 2022 Popular Post Posted December 13, 2022 Absolutely tragic news, no words for the poor victims of Thai drivers speeding down the roads and not paying attention thinking they are the only ones entitled to drive. They also display an arrogance and they refuse to accept or take responsibility for their actions which cause tragedy every day on Thailand's roads. RIP. 37 6

Popular Post AhFarangJa Posted December 13, 2022 Popular Post Posted December 13, 2022 Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027. However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts. Another couple of innocent people join the tally. The supporting paragraph in The Mail sums it up perfectly. R.I.P. 10 1 1 6

bkk6060 Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Appears the CRV is at fault, but what are the other factors? Was he making a legal turn? Was it safe to make a turn there? Did he signal prior or suddenly stop in moving traffic to turn? Looks like he had an old cheap car without airbag support. Sad 2 died, but could could deaths have been avoided? 1 1

On the other hand, if you were driving the CRV, don't you think you should be aware of the actions of the car in front of you and even anticipate at least some of what they are about to do? Since then, if we need to turn left into our house and there is anything behind, my wife pulls off to the left and waits until the road is clear. You are never, ever safe on Thai roads. 8 6 4

You can clearly see that you can turn at this point in the photo. What support would airbags have provided when he was rear ended and pushed sideways into oncoming pick up? This meant the Yaris took a sideways hit, hence the older UK guy took the brunt of the impact. Who said or what proof do you have that it was an old cheap car? There are many older cars on the roads worldwide, if a car is maintained, looked after and roadworthy what difference does it make? 10 1 7
Hakuna Matata Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Unfortunately, in Thailand, few drivers have the habit of turning on the turn signal in advance. 1

thailand49 Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Truly sad! RIP, a simple fix but it isn't going to happen as long as Thais are in control of the problem. Can't fix nor teach if one hadn't been educated themselves to the problem

Of course the CRV is to blame, but the Yaris is equally to blame, from the published photo it seems very clear that not only this wasn't a U-turn spot, but there are continuous lines and zebras on the ground indicating crossing there is totally prohibited. And behind the continuous lines were the opposite lanes, also carrying traffic, which the Yaris would have needed to cross to reach the side road. Making a turn there was reckless driving. all victims RIP. 1 1

People need to slow down to turn into these things even if there is a middle lane you can eventually get into to actually wait. This puts you in a collision course with the cars in the right lane and when you actually turn as you're entering going slower then the rest of the other cars. Problem happens because Thais and the police refuse to drive at safe speeds considering what the U turns require. There's a U turn outside my house and just last week there were two accidents. Totally preventable and caused by stupid lazy and selfish people (the public and the police included). 5

Popular Post chricha Posted December 14, 2022 Popular Post Posted December 14, 2022 So much conjecture about the Yaris driver's actions. The reality is the CRV driver didn't see the Yaris as s/he was either on the phone, drunk or asleep and then collided with the rear of the Yaris which likely had the wheels turned already to assist moving into the oncoming vehicle. This is why I never drive a small car not just because I am a tall (196cm) man but you are so much better protected in an MUX or Isuzu DMax both of which I have and drive regularly. Small cars are hit low and the impact from a larger 2 tonne vehicle is so much more if your car is only 800Kg. Nobody has mentioned the Izuzu ute - was s/he asleep also? The Yaris would have come towards them at maybe 40 or 50km per hour as it was stationary until shunted. So imho they were also negligent, When I drive in Thailand, which is often, I am always vigilant especially when I see stationary cars or bikes and/or people. So two drivers were negligent - one criminally - resulting in this tragedy. Why the reporter felt it necessary to mention that the young man was the boyfriend I have no idea! How did he know this or is it just speculation? Re the U-turns in the fast lane comment - yes they are bloody dangerous. I have had so many near misses from cars pulling from left on highway to then slowly proceed to U-turn 1km down the road!! Not to mention the 2 lane U-turns which some drivers feel is their right to do even though there is only 1 lane!! They go to the turn area in the fast lane and stop!! If it's a big truck I understand although it is dangerous but for a small car to do it is insane as they stop quickly in the 90km/h+ lane!! So when I need to U-turn I do it as quickly as possible hopefully without stopping (freaks my wife out ???? ) and keep my foot on the brakes to reduce the shunt effect. In summary you cannot take your eyes off the road/rear view mirror in Thailand. There is an accident waiting to happen to you every 5 minutes in my experience 3 1

This practice of parking in the left most lane before turning is the sign of a low trust society. You literally can't trust the other drivers to not hit you so out of fear you have to do things like this. Proper policing would fix this but there's no indication that will ever happen. 1
