Was any infrastructure improvement done last 2 years.  For ditches it's best not to do during rainy season

Same mess in Pattaya digging stuff up,

Could be a budget issues.  In western countries budgets are allocated for certain projects with a drop dead date if the funds are not used, they go away.  Not sure Thailand is that sophisticated.  In any event, lots of issues out there in these busy toruist areas.

It's not just the dug up footpaths, but the L lane is coned off to traffic causing additional traffic problems during the day.  I'm not sure when the work is completed each day, but hopefully before school lets out in the afternoons.

Previously I thought CM had done a great job of resurfacing busy streets during the pandemic and I applauded them ....

The authorities always seem to do this at inopportune times...whether to annoy residents by showing their authority....or because of Monet reasons.

With tourism struggling everywhere....adding to travellers inconvenience is not the way to do things.

And we all know what happens in the end....after months of delays..budgets exhausted...the works are never completed properly....and don't talk about the clean up!

anyone who's lived here a while will be all too familiar with the continual rip up and replace perfectly good footpaths and roads shenanigans, that take weeks if not months to complete and often result in an inferior result. i have no evidence, but common sense suggests backhanders involved...

Yes, one theory is that when it creates a fuss like now, during high season, the contractor offers to get is sorted out, obviously for an additional fee.

I just walked or navigated through this mess to and from the gym.  This also makes vehicle traffic worse.  As usual the work had not started as of 0830.  TIT

RESIDENTS in Chiang Mai are perplexed at the authorities digging up footpaths to lay water pipes during high season

That´s only because people in Chiang Mai does not understand, that the work can´t be done during the rainy season.

Chiang Rai has a similar problem, all the roads are being concreted, main roads approaching from the South are a nightmare, started in October, doubt whether they will finish before March. It's been the same every year for the past 5 in different areas. Absolutely no notice is taken regarding the plight of traders effected, or the time of year it's done.

Residents questioned why this project was not undertaken during normal times when there are not so many tourists around. They also pointed out that everything was very quiet for  two years during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic which was when this sort of utility project should have been launched

Idiots in charge... nuff said.
