Daily News Thai Caption: Can additional charges be made?

 

Thai netizens were commenting in droves after a video showed an argument outside a golf club.

 

Two foreigners had arrived in a taxi but the driver wanted an extra 100 baht to take out each golf bag in the trunk.

 

Apparently refusing to pay the driver refused to open the back.

 

In the end caddies and security tried to calm the situation and a caddy paid the fees up front herself.

 

 

Netizens wanted to know if a taxi driver was within his rights to demand a payment for a golf bag, or other items carried in taxis come to that.

 

7HD said in the video of the incident that the Department of Land Transport have clear rules that permit Bangkok taxi drivers to charge 20-100 baht for carried items of luggage from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airport only. 

 

The possibility that they had just come from the airport was not mentioned in the video or by Daily News who also picked up on the story.  

 

Drivers should always inform passengers of any extra charges before a journey commences.

Thing is there are foreigners who roll straight over and pay anything so encourages Thais to keep doing it

Once the bags are out the taxi I believe a swift 8-iron into Somchai's divot would have been in order.

Must say though, I have played golf here in many provinces in the last 30 years and used taxis on countless trips and have never been charged to get my bag out the boot. Not once.

Already expensive enough now they think it's high season. Courses will try to rip off tourists and expats thinking there is a never ending supply of cash,

And now caddies are starting to demand ridiculous amounts as a "tip"

 

The possibility that they had just come from the airport was not mentioned in the video or by Daily News who also picked up on the story.

What has this got to do with the taxi driver wanting to rip off his passengers? The exact opposite of what you are ranting about happened - a caddy paid the rip-off fee for the passengers. Did you even understand what you were reading? It seems not.

A bit chicken and egg.... if the driver was refusing to open the boot/trunk the passengers were being held hostage for their belongings. Had they refused he could have driven off with their clubs..

I have had a few incidents with taxi drivers myself.... many bad characters among them.

Thais are taught almost from birth never to ask questions. Not a great foundation for becoming a journalist.

And my local course won't even give me the Thai price, despite being Thai! 

Also, when foreigners are the clients, the caddies seem to think the foreigners are working for them, no the other way around.

My parents were made pay 1000 baht extra to a taxi that stopped on the elevated highway and started taking their bags out. 

Thailand's Taxi boys taking the Piste.

Nothing new. Thailand needs more of this sort of press coverage.

AseanNow doesn't report news. it culls it from other sources, adding editorial comments like this. There is no journalism involved.

Been here 12 years take a lot if taxis.  Always get price before travel if not using meter.  If price too high or will not commit I simply smile close door and go to next.  Usually the price immediately comes down. Have never been charged extra for large items.  Then again I tip well.

 

Taxis in Canada will also charge extra if they are carrying a lot for you.

Yes, it's always better to choose confrontation and the possibility of your heated arguments going viral making you a marked man. Especially if you're on a golf vacation where 200 baht is the difference between life and death. Who knows, with a little luck you may make the news like the fellow chased down and killed by a taxi driver with a samurai sword a few years ago.

Since 2000 or so, I always use the meter and never any issue. It eh early 90s, used to be issues as they never used the meter but never any issue now. I wonder why you ask for a price before?
