Daily News Thai Caption: Hairstyle regulations end

Daily News reported an end to the centrally issued regulations about hairstyles for school children and university students in Thailand.

In a letter to relevant authorities the education minister Trinuch Thienthong has quashed 2020 rules.

The rules caused widespread dissatisfaction thoughout the Thai education system, not least of all from the children themselves who felt that their individuality was suffered, notes ASEAN NOW.

However, it does not necessarily mean that all educational institutions will suddenly allow any kind of styles.

It just means that styles will not be officially mandated.

Each school and university will have the freedom to come up with their own rules and regulations regarding hair as they see fit.

The media headline said that children would be able to wear their hair short or long from now.

We suggest that might prove a step too far for some institutions who are engrained in the past.

Trinuch stated that there had been many complaints about the issue. Children had suffered physical and emotional trauma.

The abandonment of the old rules will soon appear in the Government Gazette.

Thai students fear cruellest cut as Education Ministry leaves hairstyle rules up to schools

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong has scrapped her ministry’s rule on student hairstyles – a rule that youngsters have long complained about. However, her decision has been panned instead of praised by many students, who believe it will land them in even bigger disciplinary trouble.

“She has let all hell break loose on children’s heads,” a powerful students’ group complained on Twitter.

The Bad Student group said that by scrapping the rule the Education Ministry is passing the buck. Now, nobody can blame the ministry when schools impose strict regulations on how their students wear their hair to class.

“Short, high and close to the head will be back for boys, and girls won’t be able to wear their hair beyond their earlobes,” the group warned.

All this over a hairstyle. The Ministry for Education will find any reason for blaming the poor results the students achieve due to broken down classrooms and copy your friend system of educating..

Thai regulations regarding hair in schools have always been barbaric. I recall teaching at Assumption College in Bangkok in the mid 90's, when one morning my Year 11 boys were 20 minutes late coming to class from assembly. The reason? They had to kneel on the asphalt in the sun because 3 boys had hair that was too long. In the public schools, if teachers considered that hair was too long, they would simply take a razer to it and force a haircut. This government decision is the type of gutless nonsense you'd expect from this pathetic government. Schools will just continue to do what they have always done.

I think you are wrong because in the end it is the parents who let their kids leave home dressed as they please. When I was doing my teacher training in a highschool in the late 90's thongs for girls were the 'in' thing. How the kids dress, in the end, is the parents' responsibility. I for one am glad for the kids to have the freedom to let their hair grow. Who knows, maybe we will start seeing spiked skinhead mohawks make a come back... God forbid! but to each his/her own.

Never found long hair stopped me passing exams. Got my O Level in woodwork with ease.

Good.

There already doing that at many schools.

Short hair should be mandatory if there's an outbreak of lice and until brought under control.

Who?

No, I am not going to help him finding a cute Thai girl.

If these girls were in many schools in Japan, they’d have to show teachers that they were wearing white underwear.

<deleted> perverts, the lot of them.

That must be an old photo of a school because now there isn't a school in Thailand that doesn't have masks as part of the uniform.    insanity!

They can have their hair any way they like just as long as they got their masks on.

Typical sloping shoulder indecisive politics rampant in the Thai system. Leaving it to the individual school is, as the students have said, going to lead to more authoritarian discipline by the autocratic teachers.

Seems a little trivial after the recent discussions over kids getting hit by a bullying teacher......my school insisted I had to go get a haircut several times... I just learned today it was draconian!
