School libraries should not contain books innappropriate to impressionable young students.

Some of the topics of banned books include changing gender, gay love, critical race theory and other absurd concepts not appropriate for students.

Parents and officials protecting their children from this filth that tears down the fabric of society should be applauded.

And some teach the history of blacks in America and systematic racism that is a part of that history.

Why is gay love not appropriate for children but heterosexual love is? Does it offend your God?.

Your quote contradicts your post.

You may also want to look into how appropriateness has been defined, together with 'unsolicited theories that may lead to indoctrination '.

Can we agree that "indoctrination" is not a good thing?

The word "indoctrination" is loaded and is out of context. The process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically.

I sure hope no one tells DeSantis about that thing called the internet where children are exposed to some serious <deleted> and that is without a parent or teacher to help them understand what they are seeing or reading.

Exactly. They are either unaware of it, or full hypocrites. High School students have been accessing all types of porn for years without their parents being able to control anything, as they can do it from their mobile phone. They are also getting any type of unchecked information on social network, sing the lyrics of rap songs, etc...

In this context, banning books is so square

So you think that pornography should be available in school libraries ?

"Protecting the children" fear mongering is how these fascists start. That's how Putin started with his anti LGBT campaign. Now he has expanded the oppression to everyone. I see now that Trump is copying DeSantis in these who hates the most games, using the word perverts, right out of Joseph McCarthy.

They're saying only authorised books are allowed.  It's a shame that things have come to this, but, unfortunately, many teachers are introducing radical texts with the aim of indoctrinating children into their ideology.  (And no, they aren't presenting them neutrally to educate the children in various different ideologies.)

As they say, "teach them how to think, not what to think".

Evidence to back up your claims please.

I'm guessing it's a conservative government and the teachers are liberals, so they're lying to try and make the government look bad.  Sad that teachers are making kids suffer in order to try and score some political points.

Seems wise to keep an eye on what books are making it into classrooms, given the rate at which teachers are trying to push controversial ideology on their students.  (No room for that in the classroom, whether left or right.)

Agree.  The Bible and christian religious teaching, as well as the biased American history written from the view of the invaders and immigrants of 200 years ago need to be banned from the classrooms.

Is the Bible taught in US public schools? In NZ it's not at all ( at least not when I went to school ).

Why is discussing sexual activities with opposite sex workmates called sexual harassment and a firing(or worse) offense, yet with grade 3 children it is all fine and good? Sorry I don't buy it. This saga is made a million times worse by the left swearing the sexualization of young children at school is a "right wing conspiracy theory" yet are going ballistic when HERO Ron DeSantis bans it?!?!

Work places where ‘work’ takes place.

Classrooms where ‘education’ takes place.

Sexulizayion of children in the classroom is a rightwing lie, it’s happening in the ‘safety’ of their own homes, not at school.

Now plonk the kids down in front of the TV/Internet and don’t worry about a thing.

Totally pointless.  No-one born in this century reads books.

Should all books be available to kids in school?

I think many of us agree that some books are not appropriate or just telling lies, etc.

And I guess there always was some control about which books were shown in the library and which not.

The question is not so much that some kind of selection should happen. It seems it's more of the question how this selection should happen.

Here is an example dumb right now because he didn't say what you're implying. He said the banning of books dumbs down the population. How did you not get that? Or maybe you did and you're just trolling? Banning books lowers educational standards by definition.

How does only allowing approved books in the classroom make people dumb?

"Some Manatee County teachers have covered their classroom libraries with construction paper or otherwise eliminated students' access to make sure they comply with new Florida law requiring all library books to be approved by a certified media specialist."

What's worse than banning specific books?  Banning all books that are not on a government approved list.

I wonder if "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is on the list?

By denying students access to books that haven't been reviewed by the government.  That is the overwhelming majority of books.

Can you give us a credible example of that happening?  Don't tell us to Google it, support your claim with sourced examples.

All books are not being removed though , just books that contain pornography and see below

"In a message sent from the Manatee district to principals, the material must be “free of pornography” and “appropriate for the age level and group.” New training approved by the State Board of Education also asks media specialists to avoid materials with “unsolicited theories that may lead to student indoctrination.”

"unsolicited theories"?  Right, we don't want students exposed to new ideas!

Regardless, all books that are not on the approved list are banned.  That's definitely taking censorship up to 11.

The problem is when you set up the "ministry of truth" the temptation to use it for political purposes is hard to resist.

This is what happens when the woke infiltrate our school system and peddle their own ideology with little oversight.

It depends on the basis of selection.

Like the Bible, that should be banned outright, or be listed under pure fiction. :coffee1:

Can't help but be impressed by Mr DeSantis's love of children and desire to protect them in spite of the hammering the fake news media(don't say gay bill lie and falsely claiming protecting kids is against the LGBT movement - totally bizarre false claims) give him. Certainly getting my vote. I trust his judgement over what books are allowed in kids schools, certainly no place for "teachers" grooming the kids or putting strange sexual ideas in their developing minds. I wonder even if the posters that want 3rd grade kids sexualized by their teachers even have young children of their own?

"DeSantis expanded that proposal, saying child sexual abuse — specifically rape — should also be punishable by death, with a minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. “These people don’t care. They are unrepentant,” DeSantis said. “... I believe the only appropriate punishment that would be commensurate to that would be capital.”

Amen Sir, keep on protecting the vulnerable kids.

Most child sexual abuse happens in the child’s own home.

Nothing to do with books in classrooms.
