Yeah lol I know we got that sorted out in 2019. Doing it correctly now I didn’t know back then. Korat helped me get everything sorted out legally. I finished sorting it out even last year when they found one more thing that I had to do. Because the agent also had skipped a step on my marriage certificate so last year I even had to go back to the embassy, and back to the MFA in Bangkok to correct it. But now everything is correct and legal and Korat helped me get it that way that’s why I know they are NOT crooks. And because they are very strict about doing everything exactly right. 
 

You see back then I didn’t know the agent was doing incorrectly and Korat knew that that’s why they helped me get it done the right way after they started fixing all that stuff back in 2018.

I am such a person.  I have been here 22 years and at all times my stay here has been entirely legal.  I have never used an agent.  Here is why I have never used the 'money in the bank' method: 

 

Lets say that instead of putting 800K in a Thai bank and getting a pittance in interest you invest the money in a credible first world market.  If you had only 5% growth per annum compounded over that 22 year period you would now have more than 2.3 million.

 

In actual fact my investments did much better than that over the last 22 years.

 

So, as I illustrate, some people on this forum are paying a very high price for the warm glow of self-righteousness.

Be honest, I think anyone worrying about visa agents in Pattaya is worrying about nothing. If they tried to take all the visa agents down there that have been operating there for say the last 20 years the entire thai prison system would be full of immigration officials, MP's and other 'colaborators) and Pattaya 75% empty of retirees (I state that as of about 20 of the retirees i know, all bar one uses an agent).

If I'm ever forced to stop the monthly deposit for extension, I'll go the agent route. Spending 15K/yr for not having to stick 800K in a Thai bank seems worth it. If they had accounts where a second person could be listed on my account, a big maybe.

 

I don't see this investigation will have any effect on Farang using an Agent. I believe they're after much bigger fish. No matter the bad luck some posters are wishing upon their brothers who use an agent.

I doubt it. Pattaya does great services to retired foreigners. This case is all about avoiding Chinese mafia taking a strong foot hold in Thailand and I applaud them for it. Pattaya's agent related bribing cases involve mostly foreign retirees who are unwilling/unable to keep 800K baht in Thai banks. It has nothing to do with trying a set up a mafia network for nefarious activities.

Best thing Thailand can do is do same Philippines & Vietnam + Cambodia no limits on pension not everyone has US Social security amounts as Thai place in you as long as spending money in the country they dont care ! Cambodia has retirement visa over 55 no strings attached or how much your  pension is ! Philippines has 3 years tourist visa no strings attached Vietnam ok unlimited entry only issues are cost of monthly e'visas to and from Cambodia back Vn not cheap for visa round trip via visa run company approx $127 US ! where Philippines approx only = $30US Per month renewal inside country at local immigration office! May really rejuvenate Thai economy help Thai people Get rid of military jaunta it's destroyed Thailand since the coup bit by bit As if Covid did not do enough damage by tyrannical government world wide Thai have military dictatorship to deal with as well , crikey even communist country like Vietnam has gone as far as Thai military governance has Only problems Vietnam has not bought back 3 monthly visa that's there problems, however unlimited land entries  visa runs

Mad Mick , what has Vietnam , Cambodia ,Philippines or Laos, which you forgot to add,  have to do with the Thai Government ?

Thanks, and not just Pattaya. I know many ex-pats up north in Isaan who used Pattaya agents for their visa extensions. In fact we had local agents working in co-operation with Pattaya agents. At that time, Pattaya Immigration must have been one of the most corrupt in Thailand. Several years ago, I once used an agent in Chiang Mai who got my visa extension issued by Ayutthaya Immigration!! (The start of the 800,000 BS lark but not in a bank account for 6 months).

Aw come on now,  surely you have been around long enough to know that there is no subject more guaranteed to bring out spiteful nastiness in the usual suspects on here, than other peoples' visa status, and, particularly, the use of agents to obtain them.

This case has been ongoing for some time,  and to my knowledge there have been no reports on here of anybody being summoned to immigration and questioned about their visas origins.  That can only be positive. 

I don't use agents, but I have no issues with those that do, and I would  be very surprised if it isn't business as usual already, 

People on here wishing grief  on others due to any visa connected matters should be ashamed of themselves, and those with a chip on their shoulder about a bit of bribery and corruption should think about living elsewhere, and taking their western "morals " with them .

Just because it hasn't been reported on here doesn't mean it has never happened. What is positive  is that immigration have now got a leader in charge that may put a stop to corruption.

If you are "entirely legal," "have never used an agent," and are using 800K as a basis of comparison, you appear to be making an argument about the merits of using the income method versus the on-deposit method for a retirement visa. That has nothing to do with the thread topic which is immigration office corruption.

 

Your argument in favor of the income method ignores several other realities and drawbacks. First and foremost, the 800K functions as an emergency fund, the key point being that the funds are readily available. So to do an apples to apples comparison of investment returns, you would have to compare overseas bank yields to Thai bank yields, not a comparison, for example, to returns on stock market or crypto investments which are riskier, and are generally inappropriate for emergency funds.  True, right now there's a huge differential between overseas and Thai bank yields, but for most of the past 20 years overseas bank rates haven't been that much higher than Thai banks. For a long time after the financial crisis overseas bank rates were lower than Thai banks and in some cases negative.

 

Your analysis also ignores that the income method subjects the visa holder to currency exchange rate risk, which fluctuate from month to month. Look at how many people from Great Britain using the monthly income method got caught with their pants down when the Pound collapsed after Brexit.

 

Also, it should be noted that any unspent funds transferred under the monthly income method probably end up being parked in a local bank anyway.

 

Finally, my post wasn't self-righteous. It comes from resentment from having experienced mistreatment on a couple of occasions at immigration.  I suspect the officer was deliberately trying to make things as difficult as possible in the hopes that I would become so exasperated that I would resort to using an agent, which would in turn provide additional under-the-table revenue as well.
