Thaksin Insists On Returning Next Month Despite Family’s Warning

DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra has not postponed his planned homecoming from next month despite a desperate warning against it from members of his family.

Thaksin’s daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, one of a trio of Pheu Thai partisan contestants for prime minister, said today (June 14) her father has not as yet put off his homecoming scheme and insisted that he will be returning from self-exile abroad within next month though his family members earlier asked him to think twice about it.

The Shinawatra family members, especially his ex-spouse Podjaman na Pombejra, have been reportedly worried to the extent that he might possibly be “fooled around” by others again and strongly suggested that he put off his planned return at least until a post-election government has been practically put in place.

If he would have returned 10 years ago then he would be soon out of prison. Maybe a few years more.   If he returns now, then maybe they let him out at his 90th birthday - if he behaves.

  • I think that if there was a chance of prison, he definitely wouldn’t come back.

Terrible timing!

Works for him, but it's really just going to stir the pot of an already fraught process, and the old buzzard isn't even a currently elected individual.

Let him come....Let's see if he can buy his way out.

Come on Thaksin, come back! Don't just talk too much as usual. Do it!

I can't see it happening. Was there any investigation into the thousands of innocent live he took in the south where he planted drugs on the already dead body and told people he caught another drug dealer. I doubt it

Best stay out of Thailand for ever... they have the wealth to allow family to go to Dubai.

If he loved Thailand so much why did he rob it blind, and cause so much trouble then and since leaving?

Come on in, Thakky...

Things are on shaky ground these days and the young stud, Pita, requires assistance.

I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms.

Ahh ... The messiah returns.  Thailand is saved lol ????????

I wonder if folks will congregate along the route waving palm leaves?

I wonder if he ever things about how wonderful life could have been for him in Thailand as a revered statesman if he wouldn't have been so greedy.

I am happy to wave whatever leaves at the prison entrance when they drag him in, screaming and crying. ????

He may have been greedy and screwed a lot of people but it’s not like he’s the only one. I think he was great for the Foreigners. At least he welcomed us and made life easier. He also was good for the economy. Sure he f’d up with the monopoly on the phone and shares manipulation, but I’d still rather have him than Mr. P and his cohorts. They have destroyed the country in the last decade and put targets on all foreigners. JMO

I wonder OneMoreFarang if they might be selling stones at the event ala Life of Brian. I do enjoy a good stoning.

Hoping for a Royal pardon. It would seem likely.

Great for Farang?

Remember who set/originated these contemporary convoluted and machiavellian visa protocol and mechanisms.

You must not be aware of how it was pre-Thaksin.

Perfect timing.

The junta are cowed and afraid and pissing in their pants.

Time to ramp up the pressure.

Thaksin arriving on the scene would be the death blow to the caretaker governments efforts to stall the new, elected government being sworn in.

I can't remember which "crimes" he was charged with, or tried/convicted/sentenced to in absentia, but those may have a statute of limitations?

Third-party share nominees?

Inside real-estate deal in Ratchada?

Yes I realize any Somchai could file new charges against him.

Maybe he has some sort of pardon in hand?

He's never struck me as unintelligent, and returning without some assurances (even if that would require him to depart again) would be anything but intelligent.

Do/did I like the guy? No. I was never one of the tens of millions of people who voted for him.

Was illegally overthrowing a government worth it just to get rid of him? Uhm, no.

Wake up, you’re lost in a junta lovers wet dream. He’ll be met by adoring masses wherever he goes in Thailand.

It’ll be interesting to see Prayuth’s reaction to what will be a humiliating confirmation of his complete and total rejection.

Oh you mean just like the unelected, undemocratic government has done for the last goodness knows how many years.

I am always confused where these impressions come from. I felt welcome in Thailand under any government. I don't blame them for having immigration laws. Every country has these laws. And many of us would hope those laws would be more radical "back home".

Obviously, some regulations, like reporting every 90 days, feel a little stupid. But come on, that and a yearly visa renewal is maybe one day inconvenience per year to stay in Thailand. I don't think that is a problem.

as much as I dislike the man, I think it's the right thing to say that he didn't catch any drug dealers        or plant any drugs on anyone.

About 2500 drug suspects were killed when he was in charge. Few of us will miss the drug dealers, but it seems too many of those dead people were called suspects so that the police could claim that they did a good job. There was definitely a lot of injustice. How many innocent people were killed will probably never come out. He has a lot of blood on his hands. That is clear.

AFAIK, Thaksin was not charged with any malfeasance or criminal activity for the "drug control" actions in 2003.

There was a call from on high to deal with the problem, and he dealt with it. Did it go well? No, does any war on drugs go well? The number of deaths/killings associated with this action have been greatly overstated, but it is an emotional issue so it gets exaggerated in attacks on Thaksin.

BTW the meth problem today is far, far, far worse than it was in 2003.

There are ~ 325,000 prisoners in Thailand currently. ~ 80% for drugs, mostly Meth. I'd wager that more than 2,500, or whatever figure you want to pull out of thin air, have died as a result of Meth use, or as a result of the inhumane prison conditions. But not much yapping about that is there.

The Thaksin hating mob are out in force here.

If he returns next month (I don't think he will) their heads are going to explode.

Hmmm…. Stupid is what stupid does?

Come on Thaksin, come back! Don't just talk too much as usual. Do it!

And if he wasn't so greedy when he was PM he would be PM for life, the country might be the powerhouse of SE Asia by now and he would have had enough time to continue amassing his family fortune with impunity...

Let the guy come home he hasn't done anything that others leaders haven't done bring Yingluck too why leave her behind!

All he wants is see his grand kids all these made up charges same stuff going on with Pita,  the old guard wants to be in charge.

Come back country needs more drama More fighting LOL.
