Rum in Thailand

Featured Replies

After decades drinking beer. On holiday in UK I've found rum. Very decent dark or white supermarket own brand at £15 or 650 bht a litre.

How much for a similar in Thailand?

You'll probably get B200 change out of your B650 for a 1l Sang Som here.

  • Sangsom is a decent rum, only don't get fooled by buying a liter bottle, since it cost more per volume than a 70 cl bottle.   70 cl is 286 baht while 1 liter is 430 baht

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SangSom

""SangSom Special Rum", as it is called on its website, is distilled from molasses. Its alcohol content is 40 percent by volume. It is aged in charred oak barrels for five years before bottling."

Wonder how much this version costs here.

I use the non-special version to kill insects in shoes left outside the house, and spray on gate posts to discourage the neighborhood dogs from their morning peripatetic pissathons.

Just me but been a rum drinker for a while and found SangSom to be a really decent rum. Will have to buy the Special Rum and try it but like someone else said it has never gave me a hang over..

Hong Thong is also good enough, and a bit cheaper than SangSom.

There is a very nice white rum distilled from sugarcane at Makro the brand is Charles House and will cost you 260 bath for a 750cc bottle. Cheers.

Not rum though and weaker, Sangsom feels like it's actually stronger than 40%

Hong Thong is rum.  Most of the Thai made stuff is rum.  I'm not sure if there is any Thai made stuff from grains, not sugar cane(molasses).

It just says "blended spirits" on the bottle. Are you sure it is a pure rum?

It says on the box blended spirits 35%, it's cheap muck

Yes it is rum, but anything lower than 40° can only be called blended spirits

Which is neither Dark or White rum.

Sangsom is good and smooth too.

About the only spirit I drink here, except the odd tequila when on manoeuvres ...

Any spirit less than 40%, unless a decent Brandy is not worth buying IMO

Which is neither an accurate or rational comment. Sang Som is a white(-ish) rum.

SangSom rum is cheap and cheerful.  Every bar has it and it's 60-70 baht at the average Bar Beer. Sure, it's a quaffing rum. Taken neat, it's a bit rough IMHO.

If you want a local gut-rot whisky, try Blend 285.  Blended from imported whisky barrel dregs and ethanol. 285 refers to the octane. :coffee1:

The same for Hong Tong.

In Thailand you can get Captain morgan gold for 400 baht and dark for 800 baht the gold tastes better

That just means they mix different batches of it together.

Hong Thong is made from rice grain, same as the Lao Khao. It has molasses added for flavouring and colour.

I looked it up.  You are correct it is made from rice and corn with some molasses.  So it is closer to distilled sake then.

So it is not rum. Thanks

Google 'The Phraya Gold Rum' for good Thai rum, though only sold internationally.   May be able to get it at King Power.
