Out of all the votes cast, only 13 senators supported the motion, whilst a majority of 159 chose to abstain, and a smaller grouping of 34 voted against it.

Someone's maths don't add up.  13 + 159 + 34 = 250 ?

Hand picked senators that have no place in politics.

Without question, not the exact same thing. But I had to recall that in my country, hand picked  Senators were selected by the state legislatures before the passing of a Constitutional Amendment making Senators (2 from each state) elected by the citizens.

Pass legislation to get weak minded operatives like Facebook and instagram to comply and hand over the ip address. Though I don’t see twitter falling for this gimmick.

Should be mandatory vote.  And abstentions should reflect on the # of votes needed to get to be Pm.  159 abstentions means 159 less votes the PM needs to get elected.   Or formal explanation why absenting.  Like related to so&so or I have media business with so&so or something.  Come on man, You can't just abstain without a reason.  Ugh.

Abstaining can be for a million reasons.
