Antarctica is missing an Argentina-sized amount of sea ice – and scientists are scrambling to figure out why

As the Northern Hemisphere swelters under a record-breaking summer heat wave, much further south, in the depths of winter, another terrifying climate record is being broken. Antarctic sea ice has fallen to unprecedented lows for this time of year.

Every year, Antarctic sea ice shrinks to its lowest levels towards the end of February, during the continent’s summer. The sea ice then builds back up over the winter.

But this year scientists have observed something different.

The sea ice has not returned to anywhere near expected levels. In fact it is at the lowest levels for this time of year since records began 45 years ago. The ice is around 1.6 million square kilometers (0.6 million square miles) below the previous winter record low set in 2022, according to data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

In mid-July, Antarctica’s sea ice was 2.6 million square kilometers (1 million square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average. That is an area nearly as large as Argentina or the combined areas of Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado

I wasn't aware the aliens were the ones pumping chlorofluorocarbon gases into the atmosphere. Thanks for the heads up.

Psst.... world average temperatures are up and climate change is real. Sorted

I just came off the Ring Rd. and for about 2 km. this old diesel pick up truck was belching black smoke the entire way.  That is one reason why the ice is missing.

First off, you don't know that. The current era of Ice Ages has lasted about 3 million years. It may come back a lot sooner if it turns out that would be the consequence of a severe disruption of major ocean current systems. Or it might not happen if the atmosphere gets too warm because of excess greenhouse gases.

But even if it does happen, you, like so many other denialists, don't seem to understand the issue of rate of change.

The rate of change don't matter it Will change  why so pessimistic .

Because all the human beings I know of, don't live thousands of years. And the rate of change may not matter to you, but it is scientifically significant. I couldn't care less about your feelings in respect to a scientific issue.

Meanwhile just to add a bit of balance, here in sunny Surin daytime  temperatures are at or slightly lower than the 30 year average and that's according to msn's own "woke" weather "facts"

There have been 5 major ice ages in Earth's history.

The current one (yes, we are currently in an ice age) started around 3 million years ago. Each and every one has interglacial periods.

Guess what, we're in the interglacial period of an ice age, the same as every one before it, and ever one that will be after it. Wow! ????

Nothing I can do about it, so why should I care?

Nothing you can do about it, so why do you hate us 'deniers' for not caring.

Or it it the 'hate' you're really wanting?

someone else who doesn't understand the difference between climate and weather

Don't flatter yourself. I could care less about you. But this is the World News Forum. And when you claim false things, you're going to get called to account.

It's not at all a sure tihng that one will follow. It's not at all sure a re-glaciation will occur or that it won't be delayed.  It may even come sooner. Lots of variables come into play with anthropogenic global heating.

That was a great example of the importance of taking the advice of experts. They discovered a problem, identified the cause, proposed a solution, we implemented it and a few decades later we were able to reverse the anthropogenic damage to the ozone layer.

It should be required reading for the anthropogenic climate change deniers.

The rate of change doesn't matter?  Do you realize the rate of change is the difference between a controlled stop and a fatal collision? Do you realize that ecosystems can evolve, adapt and even relocate given slow changes in the environment but will get wiped out with a fast change?

You are just posting uninformed nonsense on this topic.

You claim false things in almost every post you make.

The world hasn't ended, but you still go on and on.

You're right, but you're wasting your time.

The Doomsday cult has made up it's mind. The earth's constantly changing climate over millions of years has nothing to do with it. It's all due to Somchai in his diesel pickup truck. Now, live your life as they tell you (no more holidays for you, private jets for them) and hand over your money (because as long as you pay to pollute it's all OK).

This is about control and money, nothing else.

Another dishonest post. No climatologist to my knowledge has ever denied that climate changes over time. The issue is rate of change and what is contributing to that rate of change.

The rest of your post is just another evidence-free conspiracy theory.

What's truly bizarre is the existence of memes claiming that the CFC caused problem was some kind of fake.

Hard to produce evidence of Gods existence or not.

Let's face it Climate change is your god.

They used to argue about how many angels would fit on a pin.

Now they argue about CO2 reduction.

Neither matters whether real or imaginary, there's nothing we can do about it.

Proof that interventions can work, the success story of the ozone layer:

Ozone layer recovery is on track, helping avoid global warming by 0.5°C

On track to full recovery

The UN-backed Scientific Assessment Panel to the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances quadrennial assessment report, published every four years, confirms the phase out of nearly 99% of banned ozone-depleting substances. The Montreal Protocol has thus succeeded in safeguarding the ozone layer, leading to notable recovery of the ozone layer in the upper stratosphere and decreased human exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

But the long term and catastrophic effects of overall man made climate change are much harder to reduce unless the world does more. Yes this is an emergency and certainly not a conspiracy theory.

Uninformed hey ? what nonsense are you preaching? The planet has been taking care off it self for many Thousands off years ,Fast or slow it doesn't matter you can't proof one way or the other . Let it Be.

If you calculate the change of atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature over the past 200 years it blows any natural cycle or phenomenon out of the water. Probably by a factor of millions in rate of change.
