Went to the bank to cash the winning lottery ticket. Sorry you cannot claim, only Thai people can.
Just another pointless rant?

  • I know right? The amount of Thai bashing on AN is at an all time high.

  • You mean like Farangs looking down on bar girls, and just generally thinking they are better than Thais. I hate that too.

Maybe foreigners can not a the bank (as mentioned in the OP), but go to the nearest lottery shop or government lottery office.

Foreigners who have won the lottery will need to present their passport, while Thai citizens would need their ID card to claim their prize. There is also a tax fee of 1 Baht for every 200 Baht won. Prizes can be claimed at the nearest lottery shop or at the Government Lottery Office (Sanambin Nam).

Anyone with a winning ticket can claim it at any place that accepts them. Misinformed people are all around Thailand. People here hear things from other misinformed, uneducated or prejudiced people and think they are valid. If someone in a bank says you can't cash the ticket, ask to see their superiors, and have the facts spelled out and shown to them by a google search OR, just go to another bank.

weather right or not..... i find this aggressive approach to problem solving here quite effective.

Well we need to know the prize amount?

just another case of bigotry and racism.

Happens daily here, sadly.

I think it's quite easy ......  just show your passport and you can collect.   A thai has to show his or her ID so what's the fuss.

Thais have the exact same mentality.

Does that make them just as bad?

It certainly does.

I think sometimes there are easy to understand reasons. Like: Maybe there is a form to fill which has a field for a Thai ID card only.

In Thailand mostly Thais do business with Thais. With the lottery I guess it's at least 99% only Thai business.

Should farangs really expect that everything is designed to cover also the rest 1%?

Passport and Thai drivers license didn’t help.

Why would Thai banks pay winning lottery tickets? What's in it for them?

So does that bank normally payout on winning lottery tickets  ?   I thought it was only at Government lottery offices that you can collect  ?

I'm confused what your trying to say .....  are you saying they do normally pay lottery but they didn't accept your passport ?   or they do pay Thai's only  ?

I thought it was only the Government Banks (GF goes to the “Pink” bank to cash her winnings) & seem to recall their commission is 2.5% (100b on 4,000 winnings) which gives them a decent margin over the government rate of 0.5%

I won 20k some years ago and I was told to go to the office in Phuket town, I dont think they had ever seen a farang win, you would have though I robbed the crown jewels, You could sense the attitude they hated it having to pay me,

and the pink id card

I always tell people I am 100% thai and ask that they not be racist.  All in thai language of course,  even though I look like Don Adams.

Not all bank employees here are competent. I'd have them talk to the head office to clarify things. Otherwise, as others have suggested, I'd just go the government lottery office.

They probably thought that a rich foreigner would take the money out of Thailand... Some people never think that we spend it right away in the Thai economy.

Funny that when you buy the ticket no one cares whether you're Thai or not, winning however is another story.
