Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may be released from prison by either October 13th or December 5th as his incarceration becomes a lightning rod for political attacks on the new government of Srettha Thavisin. Even before this, the former premier, pardoned by the Thai King on August 31st, may be eligible to be sent home. Last week, Deputy Director of the Corrections Department Narong Juisei refused to answer pointed questioning by reporters on Mr Thaksin’s case.

Former Future Forward Party Secretary-General Piyabutr Saengkanokkul and now Progressive Movement leader this week called on the newly sworn-in government to look at a wider amnesty for all political prisoners as part of an extended national reconciliation process.

There is mounting speculation that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may be released from prison in the coming weeks possibly as early as October 13th. It comes as his seemingly preferential treatment as a prison inmate threatens to draw further political attention with a key leader of the Progressive Movement, this week, calling for an amnesty in the kingdom for all prisoners serving sentences linked with political activities.

 

There is heightened speculation that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was granted a pardon and commutation of his sentence by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Thursday, August 31st, reducing his prison term from eight years to one year, may be released from prison as soon as October 13th or December 5th.

It's not really a surprise that the criminal won't spend too much time in jail.

If he wouldn't have a deal, he wouldn't have returned to Thailand.

I think the big question for the future is if Thaksin will be quiet and play with his grandchildren or if he will be even more active in politics than he was already when he was officially not involved.

And will PT include him on stage as the all-knowing leader?

 

Thaksin's downfall was his big mouth together with his criminal behavior. Will he do more of the same? Will he continue to behave like he is above the law? If yes, then another crisis for Thailand won't be far.

 

I hope the best, but I would be very surprised if he would just shut up.

Bravo! Whoever planned and directed this political farce should get an Oscar!

What is soon as he’s released from prison I’m in the luxury suite in the hospital is helpful. Amazingly get better. What a joke. TIT.

I didn't see this coming at all. Just kidding. As for amnesty I see another coup. I see pigeons everywhere. Coup coup they shout. 

No jail time for Thaksin.... planned before his return.

It's in the pipeline, after Yingluck gets her pardon. I think Thaksin will stay out of the limelight, but will be director incognito

How much for Farangs on one of those submarine tours? Will the subs be yellow, red, and orange? All this news has been planned out in advance is my guess, more to come, same bat time, same bat channel......get your popcorn! LOL

The next big thing to come will be with "BOSS" the heir grandson of Red Bull founder.  It will soon be 10 years since he killed the policeman at a red light in Bangkok.  Haven't been able to find this guy for the past 9 years or so.
