Former Police Captain loses ฿1 million bail after he failed to show up for latest court judgement

Family of the dead young woman urged the former police officer to own up to his responsibilities in the matter and turn himself into the justice system. They also point out that the accused has not made any effort to pay compensation to the daughter or niece of the deceased woman.

A hearing in Bangkok has been set to read the verdict of the Court of Appeal in a case on October 10th next related to the death of a 32-year-old woman in the Bang Kapi area of the city on June 20th 2020. Last week, the court ordered the seizure of ฿1 million in bail after a former police officer, Songklod Boonsong, failed to show up to hear its decision. The ex-police captain was sentenced to twenty years in prison in 2022 when granted bail for the second time to appeal the judgement.

 

A 33-year-old former police colonel who was last year convicted by a court in the death of his girlfriend or common-law wife on the night of June 20th 2020, has skipped bail and failed to turn up for the latest verdict in the case which was to be delivered on Thursday the 7th of September at the criminal court in Ratchadapisek Road in Bangkok.

The judge was foolish to grant him bail in a murder case. Just knowing he was a police captain, should have robbed him of all credibility.

Meanwhile let's jail a 15 year old young woman for 50 days without bail for holding up three fingers, or jail someone for one year for wearing a crop-top.

 

But let convicted murderers and insurrectionists (Suthep Gang) out on bail.

 

 

The Thai "justice" system is anything but just.

My Thai brother in law  was a  Police constable when I met my Missus  10 years ago, today he's  a Lt. Colonel,  when I asked my wife how he rose to the high ranks in such a short time, she replied  my brothers boss likes him, he baby sits for the boss's kids..!!

His kids get their own armed police guard.... kinda explains why one can never be found on the beat!

This is the appeal, so he was previously found guilty of murder by a court, and then granted bail for his appeal. When will this madness stop? 

He is out roaming around without having to report to a police station every day, able to interfere with witnesses...insanity.

Brings to mind five cops who were given the death penalty for murderous activity during the Thaksin era. They tortured and killed a 17 year boy who was suspected of drug dealing. Anyway these convicted murderers under sentence of death were bailed by the judge and were free to distress and harass witnesses. In the period before the appeal, the key witness in the case died, I think not under suspicious circumstances, but without her, the cops won the appeal. Who on earth gives bail to convicted murderers.

Absolutely shameful injustice.

Puzzled, to say the least. 

So, with the write-off/loss of the bail of one million Thai Baht this case is closed and the sweetheart of Bangkok's finest just keeps on walking elsewhere now? What have the guardians of the law undertaken to bring this gentleman back to the "Old Bailey" of Bangkok to get the news shared?

I am always amazed at the prescribed maximum penalties in Thai law. Years are valued at peanuts! Poor people are stuffed, the rich just pay.

How can there be bail for such a serious crime? He can make his appeal out from the prison cell.

I'm thinking more and more that bail should be set at a % of a person's wealth.....for murder say 90% of the person's wealth; out on appeal after a guilty conviction again 90%; for smaller crimes like drugs or theft or scamming maybe 50%.
