Why is the Prime Minister / Finance Minister even involved with such a decision?

Is he micro managing everything that happens in all branches of government?

Seems to be a Thai thing. Pinoccchio Cha-Cha must have chaired thousands of committees. Likely baht is involved

Never happening officially in our Puritan Utopia of the North.

Not that there are not already places to party after midnight, some under the close watch and sponsorship of Chiang Mai’s finest public servants even.

PM gives green light for extending pub opening hours until 4am

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has given the greenlight for pubs and bars in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Chon Buri to stay open until 4am, tentatively from December 15, to promote tourism and increase revenues.

Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke told the media that the government has carefully considered the proposal with security agencies and is fully aware that, in reality, many pubs and bars have been operating beyond the 2am closing time illegally and it is time to put night-life venues in order and in compliance with the law.

Apart from moving closing time to 4am, he said the prime minister has instructed authorities to look into the impacts, such as the noise problem, which may disturb people near the venues, drunk driving and drug abuse.

There are steps to be taken by agencies before the new order comes into effect. These include the amendment of Interior Ministry regulations regarding operating hours of entertainment venues, the issuance of licenses, zoning, social problems and support plans to ensure the safety of customers and the public.

Chonburi and Phuket Among Four Provinces Granted 4 AM Bar Closing
By Tanakorn Panyadee

The Thai government will initially permit bars and nightclubs in four provinces, including Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, to operate until 4 AM, as announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday, November 3rd.

The revelation came after PM Srettha met with Anutin Charnvirakul, the Minister of the Interior, along with the governors of the four aforementioned provinces yesterday to discuss stretching the nighttime service hours to 4 AM.

According to Srettha, the meeting reached a unanimous decision to extend the operating hours in four pilot provinces, namely Bangkok, Chonburi, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, which Srettha said are important tourist destinations.

This extension will permit nighttime services to operate until 4:00 AM, starting on December 15th, 2023, as an economic stimulus. However, the Prime Minister emphasized that it will initially be introduced as a ‘temporary measure’ to assess its pros and cons. A thorough study will be conducted later for future considerations, he added.

Just let bars/nightclubs that are not near residential areas open whenever they want, and ensure venues near to residential areas close at midnight

This is normally done in educated countries through the licences to which the venues hold.

Each establishment is told what they can and cannot do. ie closing time, music hours etc etc.

This is a complete joke in Thailand.

No, most of that is 'taken care off" for him by the chaps in a variety of uniforms, green, brown, various shades of blue, and khaki, who put him in "power". Gives him time to concentrate on the essentials. Besides, tourism is one of the few areas in which he has any real freedom to move.

What is it with Thailand and their obsession with micro managing opening hours for places that sell alcohol.  I don't care about drinking after midnight normally, but for certain sporting events I do like the be in the pub.   The last world cup was such a kick in the teeth for any bar owners who were not allowed to open when the majority of games were being played, especially so as they were the sacrificial lambs for the global covid overreaction.

Just let bars/nightclubs that are not near residential areas open whenever they want, and ensure venues near to residential areas close at midnight.   This does not need to be so difficult.   Also remove the stupid 2-5pm or whatever it is restriction as well as the only stores that abide by it is 7/11 and the chain supermarkets so it is completely pointless.

So very true, but it is the power thing I think. Many people do not know that even bars are supposed to adhere to the 2-5 rule, that way the local plod get their brown envelope for ignoring them. There are so many things wrong with all the alcohol laws here. No alcohol at petrol stations, yet drive, or walk, less than 50 metres from one, and a mama papa shop will sell you one. I arrived on December 5th. many years ago. King's birthday, no bars or alcohol. Went to the Tops around the corner on sukhumvit, alcohol openly on sale. Went to Chiang mai and the bars in one soi stopped serving at 2, or rather, stopped serving in glasses. Something to do with being close to the temples was the excuse. I still cannot remember why the 2-5 rule is there? is it something to do with school finish times, or something?

BS. Even in Western countries there's laws that restrict opening hours for bars, and the Thai PM is a  lawmaker.

My local Makro doesn't sell alcohol as there is a university about 300 metres away, but the 7 Eleven directly opposite the uni sells.

Next door to my nearest petrol/gas station is a distributor type place, that sells a wide variety of alcohol. It is not restricted by the 11-2pm nonsense either. You would think they could only sell cases of beer, but no, plenty large glass door bar type fridges, loaded up with ice cold cans and bottles, many varieties of beer.

Then get the RTP to do the job they're paid to do and CLOSE THEM DOWN - or is there some reason why the RTP allow them to continue to operate illegally? Hmmm?

His Master's in the army nearly destroyed the tourism industry, and deliberately decimated the nightlife, so that they could remake Thailand in their own image of (fake) purity and sanctification. Now that income is way down and tourism is way down, they are making a desperate attempt to rebuild the nightlife they sabotaged.

Where is the vision?

Where is the common sense?

Where is the reason?

Where is the ability to lead?

where is the accountability of the previous regime?

Nope. Remember that you pay them to leave, not for their company.

You da boss. Squeeze in one or more shared shower before and after chicken rice from street vendor. Be creative.🙃🙃
