Hostages were carrying white cloth when shot, IDF says

Three Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by Israeli soldiers in Gaza were shot dead while holding a white cloth, an Israeli military official says.

The official said the case was "against our rules of engagement" and an investigation was happening at the "highest level".

The hostages - Yotam Haim, 28, Samer Talalka, 22, and Alon Shamriz, 26 - were killed in Shejaiya on Friday.

Israeli troops have been facing stiff resistance in the area near Gaza City.

The case has added pressure on Israeli authorities to reach a deal for the release of the more than 120 captives who remain in Gaza.

The wait of their families has gripped Israel, as the military carries out its offensive against Hamas.

Speaking at a news conference, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there would be no let-up in the Israeli operations.

"Military pressure is necessary both for the return of the hostages and for victory. Without military pressure... we have nothing," he said.

Hamas, for its part, said it had told mediators there would be no negotiations to release hostages "unless the aggression against our people stops once and for all".

An Israeli military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said an initial investigation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) suggested the three hostages emerged shirtless from a building, with one carrying a stick with a white cloth.

One of the soldiers, the official added, felt threatened, as the men were at a distance of tens of metres, declared them "terrorists" and opened fire. Two were immediately killed while the third, wounded, returned to the building.

A cry for help was heard in Hebrew and the battalion commander ordered the troops to cease fire. The wounded hostage later re-emerged, and was shot and killed, the official said.

The hostages had either been abandoned by their captors or escaped, the official added.

A building with a message SOS was found in the area, and the authorities were investigating whether it was linked to the killed hostages.

Looks like to me that the 'rules of engagement' says 'No Prisoners'. Any Hamas is gonna understand about waving any white flags.

Seems to be there is going to be a lot of reckoning after the fight is over, especially after today's news that some girls/women were killed in a Christian religion compound where no terrorists were ever present or welcome, and which the Pope has already addressed.

Same excuse used by people who killed under "Stand Your Ground" laws in the US. This is too easy a way to escape punishment.

This incident is not an isolated event. A few weeks ago, in Jerusalem, an Israeli man, after successfully neutralizing two gunmen who had opened fire, was tragically shot dead by a soldier despite raising his hands in the air and removing his shirt to signal that he was unarmed.

Even more alarming, those three hostages, who were unarmed, displayed a white flag, had their clothes removed, and shouted in Hebrew, were still fatally shot.

It raises the question: What more can one do to avoid being shot by the Israeli army?

Numerous video footage incidents, documented on the internet, depict soldiers shooting at children, disabled individuals, women, and even fatally shooting injured men lying on the ground.

Such actions are simply war crimes and suggest a disturbing pattern of shoot-to-kill policies within the IDF.

Blame Hamas.

Hamas is the group that hides behind civilians, disguises itself, and so on.  Hamas kidnaps, rapes, mutilates, and murders innocent men women and children.

To their credit, the IDF will look into this. There may be repercussions, if so then fine. That is how a professional military handles things like this.  Hamas are neither professional nor military. Just sub-human thugs cowering behind civilians.

Biden says they bomb indiscriminately.

Archbishop of Westminster says they kill in cold blood.

Yet some here deny any war crimes.

A terrible accident by all accounts, but what we do know for certain that the raid on Israel on the 7/10 was no accident, it was premeditated sadistic killing, but strangely this appears to be swept under the carpet by the I hate Israel brigade. It's a euphoric eureka moment for many only too willing to blame Israel for a war that the Palestians started, for without starting this war many more people would be alive today.🥴

Keep bringing Hamas into every crime committed by the IDF is no longer works. Same goes to trying to link all IDF war atrocities to 7 October but ignoring everything that happened before that date.

How one can blame Hamas when the IDF shoots a guy lying injured on the ground or a when a sniper kills 8 years old playing in front of his house?? The large number of such incidents indicate they are not isolated events.

Oh come on be honest, Hamas have done much worse than that, much much worse.

You can blame Hamas, because if Hamas hadn't attacked Israel, Israel wouldn't be in Gaza at all and no one would have been killed

The objective of war is to kill as many people as possible.  They did it so congrats to them.

Sorry white flag people.

Liar, he did not say they killed in cold blood, he said the killing of two people was done in cold blood, the IDF deny it was them.

This too?

IDF tanks also targeted the convent of the Sisters of Mother Teresa, part of the church’s compound that also houses 54 disabled people, the patriarchate said. The building’s generator, fuel resources, solar panels and water tanks were also destroyed, it added.

Sorry white flag people.

If that were true then the IDF is doing poorly. They have 300 attack aircraft but have only managed to kill 18,000 Palestinians in 2 months? Pretty poor showing.  Or perhaps, that is NOT their objective...

Textbook IDF tactics. Immediate denial followed by shameless internal investigation not allowing third party or neutral involvement then months later, when the story dies down, IDF is cleared of any wrongdoing. However, if the crime happed to have been captured by any media outlet, IDF would issue a half-hearted apology wrapped up in some stupid excuse.

Do you remember the case of Al Jazeera murdered journalist Shireen Abu Akleh?  Google it.

There is zero justification for the Oct 7th Massacres, rapes, execution's, torture's, mutilations and hostages taking whether in a vacuum or not. It was the largest terrorist act in modern history

There is no proof or evidence that it was a IDF bullet , just one person says it was .

Also, he doesn't even say how he knows who shot the bullet , as snippers tend to be hidden and he's hardly going to say that he thinks that it could be a Hamas bullet, now is he

It was the precise counterpoint to your naive claim that Hamas attacked out of a vacuum. What do you believe caused their attack? You can't possibly imagine that prior events didn't provoke it surely? That would be risible.
