Russian tourist on Pha-ngan Island accused of kicking Thai pregnant woman

What people should really be focused on is what kind of blow back this rash of shocking incidents might elicit from immigration. The over-tourism and massive wave of foreigners granted long-term visas (especially in Phuket) appears to have reached some type of tipping point where apparently a growing number of people think they can do whatever they want in the Kingdom.  Incivility, disobeying police officers, ignoring labor laws, ignoring visa terms and conditions, engaging in criminal activities, assaulting and verbally abusing Thais, etc. all appear to be on the rise. Anyone who thinks this type of behavior doesn't have potential repercussions is in for a rude awakening.

Heightened background checks, increased visa fees, increased visa requirements, retightening of TM-30 requirements could make the visa application and renewal process far more arduous than it currently is. Visa renewal denials, discontinuation of visa programs are also possibilities. Don't think that the humiliation of disarming a police officer and putting him in a choke hold doesn't increase the likelihood of the use of lethal force by police officers. Not to mention the erosion of general goodwill towards tourists and long-term visitors. Again, people like this need to clean up their act. Make no mistake, they are doing a great deal of harm, and potential repercussions are likely lurking right around the corner.

Are we getting to the stage where any altercation or negative interaction between a foreigner and a Thai is going to lead to an exaggerated accusation and subsequent social media which-hunt ???

There is clearly CCTV photographs... So why is there no video with the story ?

Whenever there is 'hard unequivocal proof' of an incident (video) we usually see it.....

... So... is this 'kick made up' ??  where is the proof ??

----

What really happened.

- Russian walks into shop

- Thai woman rudely shouts at her to get out she's not welcome

- Russian woman yells abuse back

- Thai woman doesn't like this an escalates

Thai woman's contacts the police and social media playing the victim.

Again - where is the video ??

I think you are overdoing the "what really happened", besides, if the Thai lady was the instigator, she probably wouldn't have reported it.

Do you really think the shop lady abuses her customers to lose tourist trade, I don't think so....😉...............🤭

Agreed.... But, in more 'backward' area's of Thailand its still the norm.

I've walked into loads of shops with my shoes on then...

- I've either noticed and apologised and taken off my shoes and left them by the door.

- I've either noticed and apologised and been told not to worry about it.

- Its been pointed out and I've apologised and taken off my shoes (no biggie).

BUT... IF I walk into any shop and the shop assistant starts getting rude with me and yelling... I'm going to tall them to flook awf and walk out.

In area's of high tourist footfall there is a 'familiarity breeds contempt' situation whereby many Thai's are fed up and perpetually angry at 'rude foreigners' so their skin is very thin and they get unjustly upset very quickly...

This 'thin skinned' reaction is not uncommon in area's of very high tourist footfall.

-----------

I recall looking at an item in a Thai shop (in Samui) and asking how much it was.

Thank you... was my response.

Then the shop assistant got angry and started telling me I'm a bad farang if I don't want to buy...  she got agitated so I ignored her and walked out...  no negotiation, no conversation - Just an agitated rude person nothing good at all was going to come of any further interaction.

When involved in an incident some people lack any ability to recognise that they are the instigator ?

People get very indignant...     It seems the Thai woman instigated a confontation by telling the Russian to get out she wasn't welcomed.

- Did the shop owner first ask the Russian woman to take off her shoes ? Or..

- Did the shop owner just start yelling at the Russian, right off the bat ???

This was all on CCTV - why is there only one photo then ?

Yes I do... Its happened to me... I find the shop assistants in area's of high tourist footfall to be quite surly on occasion...

I just ignore them... but I have seen Thai's go from very calm to very angry over the most innocuous of incidents.

How woke you are.

Farang isnt a racist term. As the word Caucasian isnt racist. Only to the sensitive woke types.

And considering your user name it is a bit rich for you to be claiming that.

Not sure if we're on the same page regarding "wokism" but thank you for speaking out about the word 'farang' not being a racist term.

"Several social media platforms have posted images of the Russian, taken from the shop’s CCTV system."

Any of them show the crime in commission?

I would also very much like to have seen what was/wasn't being worn under those tables in the background:

Open season now on foreigners......plenty of unscrupulous, greedy Thais willing to attempt to capitalise on that.

Because it was reported in the OP.   Intonation and certain internationally understood profanities are easily interpreted.

Frits...  You're a fool if you blindly believe every story you are reading now in Thai and social media....

It is often said... there are three sides to every story...   "What he said, What she said, and the truth"...    with all many of these 'farang behaving badly' stories circulating in the media right now, we are seeing very one sided reports....

Good gawd...

Bad timing for kicking a Thai woman.

Precedent has been very recently set.

She shouldn't expect leniency.

It is a thread, we have been given a story and a couple of photos of the Russian bird assaulter taken from CCTV, that's it.........

Let's see what the future brings......😁

But you do seem to be blaming the Thai lady, when you don't know the full facts because of "your own personal story", now that doesn't cut, chum....:whistling:

Perhaps I'm am Bias, I am certainly cynical when reading such reports given the current 'anti-farang' climate in social media in Thailand.

You mentioned the 'Russian bird assaulter'....    There is no proof of assault... so your bias has shown through.

We have one Thai lady who has made a claim of assault....   we have on photograph of the Russian lady standing in the shop.

The story is one sided......   We don't even have any comment from the Russian's perspective... So yes, I am quite cynical about this story.

You are correct, I don't have all the facts...     Why don't we have the whole CCTV video from the shop ???

What makes me most cynical is that an accusation like this is being reported on as fact without any proof and then people are believing the reports.

My point its the story is very one sided so far...  With these issues there is a trigger point... and it would not surprise me that the 'trigger' point in this case is an unstable unhinged 'surly' Thai shop assistant going from zero to full on in an instant...  I've seen this happen a few times - so of course... my own personal story... or more correctly, my personal experience influences how I interpret the story when its missing facts.

Thus: before passing judgement on the Russian or Thai lady...  we'd need to hear both sides of the story.

Where is the full CCTV footage... surely that would be widely available if it really did show the Russian woman kicking the pregnant Thai lady....

(*is the Thai lady even pregnant, or is that a further cry for victim sympathy ?).

😂..............The thread is about a Russian bird assaulting a pregnant Thai shop owner.........Perhaps you should get onto who ever wrote the story for our attention.....😂

If we do it your way, nobody would post.......

In assault situations such as this ??....    the assault is an unproven accusation... its not an assault situation.

In accusation such as this, when CCTV captures something damning its pedalled throughout the media....

The absense of any CCTV footage brings the veracity of the accusation into question, particularly when there are screenshots of the CCTV footage.

We've seen this plenty of times before when footage is clipped short and shows one part of a confrontation without presenting balance and the full story.

Do you really think its unreasonable to doubt the accusation when there is no evidence yet CCTV was clearly running ?????

Do you really think its unreasonable to want to see evidence (CCTV footage) before passing judgement ?

Perhaps I am to cynical - but I just do not blindly believe the story presented by social media and Thai media when it is so absent of any fact.
