Thai Government Steps Up Efforts to Curb Chinese Business Dominance

On August 19, 2024, reports surfaced in Thailand detailing steps by the Ministry of Commerce to control the effects of foreign investment, especially from China, on local businesses.

It's reported that Chinese investors are implementing a vast strategy involving imports of inexpensive goods, setting up sales platforms, and investing in their own storage and distribution systems in Thailand.

A gathering of 12 agencies, including those in the service and logistics sectors, as well as other government and private sector representatives, is planned for the 23rd of August. This meeting by the Department of Foreign Trade will aim to discuss ways to manage and mitigate these effects in both the short and long term.

Potential measures include a proposal for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) to oversee foreign business platforms. This oversight would ensure the quality and safety of products, alongside regulating their pricing. Also, import taxes and non-tariff measures might be considered.

The Commerce Minister of Thailand has previously cautioned that the new inexpensive Chinese e-commerce site "TEMU" could harm small Thai businesses.

There are growing worries about the trend of foreign investors reducing prices and taking over businesses in Thailand, potentially leading to more significant challenges in the future. While tackling these issues, the ministry emphasizes that they may need to enforce current laws strictly and possibly introduce new rules to regulate the operation of foreign platforms in the country, reported The Pattaya News.

Haha, so they open a high speed rail between the two countries. That will slow things down!  Rename the country ChiLand.

Finally seeing that China is purely predatory in its mercantile aggression against neighboring countries. Too late.

They've removed all border restrictions for Chinese. Even allowing them now to stay here for 5 years pretty much with the new visa.

They're building bullet trains from China into Thailand. Which judging by other countries only benefits China dumping more products into Thailand.

China’s Not-So-Secret Economic Weapon (amac.us)

A new report has provided compelling evidence that China’s excess manufacturing capacity – long considered a potential weakness by many Western economists – may in fact be a critical part of Beijing’s efforts to undermine the United States by decimating the American manufacturing sector.  As the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) writes, “Overcapacity is a feature, not a bug, of China’s model of state capitalism.” While a production glut may be a serious problem in a free-market economy, Beijing’s willingness to heavily subsidize Chinese industry has allowed Chinese companies to continue pouring cheap goods into foreign markets – including using backdoors through countries like Vietnam and Mexico to skirt American tariffs.

Who would have thought this would happen? It's like expecting a plague of locusts to descend and leave the crops alone.

Oh dear, we do want their money pouring in, it makes us all rich.

But we don't want them actually DOING anything with their money (other than just giving it to us).

Part of China's plan for global dominance, which dates back centuries.

Of course, this plan, in Thailand at least, is assisted by corrupt local officials who will do anything (including selling out their country) to get extra cash, and local Chinese-Thai business families wishing to curry favor with the CCP and/or seeking to enter China or expand their operations in China.

Why are not the ultra-conservative ultra-nationalist Thais complaining about this Chinese "invasion" and destruction of Thai businesses?  Their silence is deafening.  At least Rama VI was very vocal in his concern about this "invasion".

Yeah, right. And I have a bridge to sell Thailand...which the Chins will pay for. :coffee1:

And OLOA (open legs, open arms) visa policy is not helping anyone, except the Chinese and the Russian scammers, gangsters and businesses. They havekkely extended an open invitation to the Triads and the Bratva. Thailand should have known better. They would have known better if they had some talent and qualified people in the government, who actually got their positions based on merit.

Neither of those two groups have good intentions. Both are dangerous and predatory.

Wow, now there's an idea 😂

They better up the education system if they want to attempt that.  Pretty much the whole world can't compete with CH's business dominance, direct or indirectly.

Chinese have always been in Siam/Thailand, but they really started coming when Mao was in the process of turning the country into a Communist State.  WW2 started an exodus from China and the Thainese have taken over large parts of Thai society (especially business, military and courts).  People think all the non-Communist Chinese went to Taiwan - they did not only go there - a lot of them came to Thailand.

The Thai govt say they are stepping up efforts to curb Chinese business dominance ? Stunning hypocrisy. It's the Thai govt which has opened the door for the Chinese already. Too late now.

See what happened in Malaysia when leadership stood up to what was going on.

much more difficult these days, when the majority in your government, businesses, and industries are run by Chinese descent.

Indeed. the first king of the current dynasty invited Chinese immigrants en masse to settle in Siam. He believed that their business acumens and resourcefulness was needed to develop Siam into a modern nation. He also encouraged the Chinese to freely marry the native population as to enrich and enlighten the Thai DNA if you know what I mean.
